"Ancestor! Why did you write that down!?"
Ash stormed into the hall. His hair was swaying wildly and a halo off primal fire burned behind him. Was he trying to frighten me?
"Write what down?" My casual response seemed to just anger him more. This will be entertaining I hope.
"You know what I'm talking about. That story, the fifth chapter." The primal fire burned on and the various aids and guards quickly evacuated the room. Although the primal fire wouldn't burn them it could if Ash lost control. Not to mention the temperature in the room rose exponentially.
"I promised I would never speak of it again, I never said anything about not writing it down." If I could, I would have laughed my ass off at this point. Ash's face looked like someone had just stepped on his tail.
"Don't worry so much, just make sure your family doesn't read it and you'll be fine."
"Family? Ancestor we haven't had any living relatives since your daughter died in the realm of primal water." The primal fire slowly went out and the temperature of the room began to cool.
"Are you sealing your memories again?" Ash now looked deflated, I could see how the eons had affected him.
I have always admired Ash, since that day when he lost his body. His mind is far stronger than mine ever will be.
"You know I'm going to leave it, don't you?"
"I know."
"Then that cant be the reason you came by, old friend?" Ash never came by anymore unless it was necessary.
"The Dread Realm is stirring again. I'm going to go and join the front." Ash made a slight smile and scratched his head.
"Enjoy."
Ash nodded and began to walk out the door. He turned around and looked at me. Unable to move, even writing my story was done by my magic. He had pity in his eyes. That pity hurt me more than anything else ever could.
"I'm glad you're writing it all down. Ancestor, I release all the pacts of secrecy, please write it all down." Ash then walked out, sealing the room once again.
Before anyone entered the hall I sealed every door, I needed some time.
"Beliya'al, Ash is trying to die again, isn't he?"
Beliya'al appeared as he always does, sitting by the throne drinking a goblet of what smells like blood.
"I believe so my Sovereign." Beliya'al took a small sip of his drink.
"But my sovereign knows as well as I that Lord Anzan will not be killed even if he turns the entire Dread Realm to ash."
"Tell me Beliya'al, would you care if I died?"
"I would not my Sovereign. That is also a highly unlikely scenario as you would turn into a Diety before then."
"Hmmm, you are correct."
I shouldn't be able to feel anything anymore. Sitting on this throne made it impossible to feel anything at all. At least that's what I thought. What I had not shared with anyone is that since I began to write I could feel the faintest of feelings. I didn't know what that feeling was but I was certain it was there.
"Beliya'al, go with Ash. Make sure he doesn't turn my armies into... Ash."
"An awful pun as always my Sovereign."
My arms still couldn't move. I suppose ill continue to use my will to write.
Ash and I had returned to the inn, this was our last day in this town and we needed to keep a schedule. My new hair color did not escape the old woman behind the desk. It seemed that she and her husband owned the inn. They took shifts to keep the inn open nearly 24 hours a day. She must remember me from when Ash and I arrived the day before.
At least she didn't make a fuss about it.
As we walked out of the inn she did comment that it looked better than before.
And so our journey to Amberth continued. We passed by a few merchants and village caravans going to sell their goods in town. This was quite a busy road. It's amazing what a few hundred years could do to a region as baren as Amberth. I was quite curious so I asked Ash.
"Baren? Ancestor, you have it all wrong. Amberth is teaming with life. Not only is it an agricultural and trading hub it's also the home of the greatest military training ground in Falstad."
Ash looked quite proud of himself as if he had something to do with his ancestor's accomplishments.
"So its quite a prosperous place then?"
"No, no, no. Prosperous is an understatement. Amberth is THE most prosperous and powerful dutchy in Falstad. In fact, our family wealth and military can rival the crowns."
"Now that is interesting. How does the royal family of Falstad and Belzenhall let the Ashvel family have so much power?" If I was king of Falstad or emperor of Belzenhall I would definitely crush a growing power like the Ashvel family as quickly as possible.
"Well its a very long story but basically my ancestors, your descendants, were very intelligent. I don't know the details but rumor has it that the Ashvel family had something to do with the rebellion in Burnia and the conquest of Falstad by Belzenhall."
"And you don't know anything else?"
"Nope, that's old family secrets that I would not be privity unless I was part of the inner circle."
"Then you're not aware then."
I like to make Ash interested in things he doesn't know about. He makes a funny face and his eyes bulge out a bit every time.
"What am I not aware of?"
"Relax I'll tell you. The Ashvel family was originally from Burnia. In fact, we are an offshoot of the holy line that used to rule the Church of Great Flame. At least during my time, we were."
"That would explain the rumors that the Ashvel family had something to do with the rebellion in Burnia."
It seems I have enlightened Ash enough to clear his doubts.
Our journey continued for another two days. It took us three days of slowly walking and joining some caravans midway to make it to Amberth.
I remember Amberth, although it cannot compare to my empires capital city it was a majestic city in and of itself.
It had three layers of massive walls, each thicker and larger than the next. The outer wall was at least 50 feet high and the inner was 60 feet high. The middle wall was 40 feet high but its thickness was astounding. At least 20 feet in thickness while the other two were about 15 feet.
A moat wrapped around the city between the inner and middle walls. Spikes were placed throughout the moat making any fall a deadly one.
Massive farms surrounded the city from every side. I could see why it was an agricultural hub. Not only were villagers and farmers all around us as we got closer, but knights and soldiers were also everywhere as well. Sometimes I would catch a glimpse of a group of soldiers riding along the road carrying what looked like the heads of beasts towards the city.
"You weren't joking about the Ashvel family military being on par with the kingdoms were you?"
Ash began to giggle to himself, I disliked it whenever he did that.
"I was not."
I noticed that we were not heading towards the main gate but a side entrance towards the west.
Eight guards stood at attention. Their armor identical and their stance professional. They each wore the symbol of the house Ashvel with pride. The Ashvel family crest had not changed in all these years. A hand of iron with a flame in the center.
"Hello, I am Anzan Ashvel, here is my proof of identity. I would like to return home quickly if you don't mind."
Ash had become authoritative all of a sudden. His posture straightened and his gaze fixed on the soldier in front of him.
He handed over a card which had a glowing string attached to his wrist. An identification card? Nobility is as nobility does. They cared so much about their lineages that this magic card was invented as proof of their special bloodlines.
The guard quickly inspected the card and pressed another card to it.
"Welcome home Lord Ashvel. Please allow us to escort you to your villa." As professional as ever. Regardless of what has happened the Ashvel house still knows how to train the finest soldiers in Falstad.
"No need I will go myself, and he is with me."
The guard gave me a word of greeting and let us through the small gate.
I am releasing this chapter without proofreading it. Please excuse any typos as I will do my best to correct them when I get a chance.
