Chapter 46: Mother of an abnormal child
When it was four months of her pregnancy, Ador did some routine tests. All seemed fine. When she went for an ultrasound ,she could hear the heartbeat of her child clearly, they sounded honey to her ears. Ador was getting plump. She loved salty items. Gopi used to go with her during her medical check ups to Dr Krishna and Gautam too.
This time Gautam by a slip of tongue said, the foetus size is still small, though the heartbeat is regular. This made Gopi think that the foetus was abnormal. She went home and conveyed the message to the rest of the family members and also called up Ita.
Ita said, Ador was chubby. So the baby was small due to lack of area of growth but since foetuses are small parasites, any which way, they would grow, so not to worry. Gopi snapped at Ita for calling her grandson a parasite. Ita only laughed.
After two weeks, out of curiosity, Gopi took Ador back to Gautam for an USG. He said the uterus is full of water, the baby seems to be well but it's size is still small. Ador told Gopi not to fret. But the mother duck only quacked more. She made a fuss out of it. When Dev returned home, he saw a dull Gopi and a flushed Ador. When he heard from Gopi that his child was abnormal, he went to Ador for an explanation and told her to quit her job. Ador refused. They quarreled over it and to teach Ador a lesson, he had sex with her and it was rough. He did not want her to work anymore. But she was not budging. Early morning Ador was feeling all sore. She had a meeting to attend. Next week she had to give a presentation to her hierarchy. She left for office in a hurry after having milk and cornflakes, on a taxi. While she was on her way, she called Ita and said her stomach was hurting. Ita advised her bed rest as she was genuinely worried about Ador and the child's safety, but due to Ador and her never ending work deadlines, Ita told her to go back early to Durgabari. While Ador was talking to Ita, there was a loud boom and Ador leaped forward with a jerk. It was an accident. A car came speeding and rammed into her yellow taxi. The driver too was injured but Ador started bleeding in small amounts. She informed her boss , that she met with a small accident and needs some rest due to a shooting pain in her abdomen and went back home and went straight to bed. She feared her mother in law. Her bleeding started to increase and she panicked. She informed Ita first. Both Ita and Unma were on their way to Durgabari to save Ador from her in law's wrath. Gopi came and saw the blood stained bed sheet and called Dr Krishna.
Dr Krishna told her to do a vaginal USG. Ador was rushed in to a nearby diagnostic centre and before Ita and Unma, could come to her rescue, Ador's USG was done. She felt nauseous. It was painful. Her bleeding increased. When Dr Krishna came to Durgabari to see Ador, once the reports came in, she said the baby was dead and that Ador miscarried. Both Gopi and Dev were shouting at Ador. Ador still in bed, was crying softly. When Ita and Unma reached, they bore the wrath of Ador's in-laws. They saw a helpless Ador, both did not say a thing to her and left. They were not allowed to sit and talk with Ador.
Gopi was screaming. " Good riddance to bad rubbish. After all the foetus was not growing. It was an abnormal child. good that it is dead. Take your job oriented daughter with you. We don't want her in this house anymore"
Unma wanted to put some sense into Gopi but Ita took her away. She said "Time will heal."
Ador called at 6 p. m. to Unma, saying she was in immense pain and excessive bleeding. Unma talked with Kir and Ita, took an appointment of Dr. B.D. Mukherjee, a gynaecologist of Birla Hospital. She then called up Dev. He was totally drunk and told Unma in between sobs, that he is a failure, he could not save his son. Then he started howling. Unma understood, that it was her time, to take charge of the situation. She went to Durgabari, called Amal the driver and rushed with her sister to hospital, amidst the chaos created by Gopi and Bali. Bali was furious. He called up Kir. But this time, Kir also was all daggers. Both fought over the phone. In the meantime, Dev succumbed to sleep. Ador reached hospital and she was taken to a minor OT to clean up. Kir and Ita came to the hospital and stayed till 9 pm and took Ador back with them to their home. She did not go to Durgabari.
She went to a home where she was loved not rebuked. She needed time to heal and get over this mental agony.
