Chapter 11: Once smitten, twice as shy
Just as Unma had thought, the next morning, Kir got a call from Bali. Bali was speaking softly, as if ,he was the would be bride's father. He said , "Pardon us, Dev called us to say that he is interested in Ador and would like to proceed towards holy matrimony at the earliest. Prior to that he would also like to keep in contact with Ador via phone calls and meet once or twice at social gatherings, just to know Ador better."
Kir was at a loss of words. He stammered. He said, "Actually, we have not thought about marriage for Ador, since the family has just lost Didun. So at least one year, we cannot think about marriage."Ita was nearby. She took the phone from Kir and talked with Bali. She said, "sorry to have interrupted the both of you, but this call is regarding the future of my daughter. I would just like to say that marriage is not like buying a Saree, from a shop, that today I like this Saree, so I buy this, tomorrow I may like another Saree, I will then buy that... It's been six months since we all met and your first rejection, though unintentional, for the best interest of your son's future, left my daughter in grief, I don't want her to bear through the same pain again. Kindly rethink before you take a step towards finalizing, plus we also are in a period of mourning, so for us to plan marriage is not possible, at least for a year. If you all still agree and finalize Ador, we will meet in a year's time, to fix the date. In the meanwhile let Dev rethink about marriage and then give us or Ador, a call. " She then disconnected the call. Bali, never in his dreams thought that a woman would speak her mind so openly. He then told Gopi that if all goes as expected, Dev's would be mother -in -law would be tough to handle and left for work.
Dev came back after after a week and was impressed with Ita's words. He was now more interested in marrying Ador. So he called Kir and asked his permission of talking with Ador. Kir, hesitated, then said to Dev, "Son, we are people from the hills, simple and straight forward, we do not have many friends in this city. Ador too does not mix with people. If she falls for you, and then you break her heart, it will be difficult to mend it. I have raised my daughters well, they are my pride, kindly handle them with care, specially Ador, she is the shy and demure type. "He then gave Ador's contact number to Dev and disconnected the call . Kir looked at Ita. Ita's eyes were moist. She nodded her head in approval to Kir's words.
The following day Dev called Ador.
