Bet your wondering why did I wake up, shower, and the go back to sleep? It's not really sleep, it's my job. I'm induced into a "sleep" where I dream and what ever I dream about becomes energy. That energy is used to help create things, wonderful helpful things. I'm also forced into it, I don't know anything else. I don't know what's real or a dream. All I know is that I'm one of the selected few and that I'm fortunate to be unique. From the outside, I'm lying down on a gurney, with a breathing mask and a helmet with a ton of wires attached to me. I'm strapped in so I don't fall off or is it escape? From what I'm seeing, I'm in the middle of the farm, foot in fresh poo, and straw all over me.
"Stop being lazy," I hear someone yell from behind. I jump up too see who was yelling. It's a good looking young man with one eye golden brown and one eye ice blue. His hair shaved from the sides and his black void long hair tied back.
"I'm surprised you can hear me," he laughed, "get over here and help me bring in the cattle. Storm is coming, never announced, just coming in with force."
I ran over and tried to say something but nothing came out. I touched my throat and found a scar. A deep scar, not fresh. I think my vocal cords where gone. Accident or on purpose, I'm not sure. I looked at the handsome dude.
"It's been years Karen," he smiled, "you'll never get them back." I looked at him with a scared eyes. "What's wrong?" Although I couldn't express it, I couldn't believe my name is Karen.
It's been days, it feels like days, I've been feeding the live stock, cleaning them, picking up crops and selling them in our corner shop. We wake up at 5am everyday and don't get to sleep until 10pm. The good looking mans name is Sven, he's my brother, and I'm a boy. It's just us and two other people, I think they are our grandparents but Sven calls them by their name, Martha and John. Remember that Storm? Well it's actually a very scary man who picks one of the cattle to do experiments on. He has one eye, deep rich black eye and one gold tooth. He smells like Lajatto but musty and down right hot. Like his body temperature is really up there, that's not normal.
"Karen," Sven said in almost a whisper. It's the twilight hours and we share a room. My "brother" is hot and it's weird to say or think that. My dude sleeps shirtless, chiseled, in his boxers, and he's lying on his side looking at me. His piercing eyes can be seen through the dim lit room and his long hair is dangling over his left shoulder. I knocked on the bed post two times, so he knows I'm up and listening. "We should leave soon, these kind people have protected us to long. Storm thinks we are ready." I got up suddenly. "What's wrong?!l Sven asked surprised. I didn't know how to say it or ask why. I thought they where family? "If you are worried that Storm will hurt them, there is no need." I walked over and sat at the foot of his bed. "They are dying, the virus got them two days ago. Storm came and got their samples. I didn't want to tell you, you treated them like our grandparents." I looked over, tears where flowing. They where not my tears but it was hot as they rolled down my face. I punched myself, I felt it. I ran over to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. It wasn't me looking back anymore, it was Karen. Almost a carbon copy of Sven but shorter and hair down to the waist. The scar on my throat was a lot bigger and deeper than I thought. Sven walked up behind me, he's looking at me through the mirror. He had a small scar on his throat too, but he could speak. "It's been a while since you cried," he said while patting my head, "this war has changed us." We looked deep into each other's eyes, he gave me the warmest smile. "Mom and dad would be proud of the man you have become. You saved me Karen, I could never repay you for what you have done. The cyborgs where only after me, you came back even though I told you to leave." Sven looked like he was about to cry, he looked down and continued. "Storm said if we get one more calf born and get to the ark, we'll be able to leave. Start a new life on the ark." I was confused, I had no idea what was happening, Sven could see it in my face. "We'll dig up the weapons tomorrow, pack our things and give Martha and John our deepest hugs. We need to survive, we're not like everyone else, we are immune to the virus." Sven led me back to my bed. "Sleep Karen, it's going to be a long time until we can sleep like this again." I closed my eyes and thought, this is my dream. I can make anything happen. As I thought that, I felt a hard tug. It felt like I was being pulled out through the bed. It was hard and I was falling fast. Like a roller coaster, my heart was pounding and my hand where clammy. I couldn't tell what was up or down. It didn't matter if my eyes where open or close, all I see is darkness. I looked over to my right, hoping to see Sven but all I saw was Lajatto. A tear slid down my face.
