Chapter 17: "Wolf Problems"

I was sitting on a bench in the school garden, twisting a rose in my hand thinking about myself as Alpha. How many mistakes would I make? How bad would I fail? Would I be a humiliation to my parents? Thinking about making my mom unhappy was just to solemn for me. I would never do that to her.
"Hello,"my thoughts were interrupted by a soft whisper. I looked up, in front of me was Vera. She was wearing a shirt and skirt outfit with black and white sneakers. It was simple, but it made her look beautiful. Her hair was down and curled on her shoulders. She looked happy, it must be the garden. Most girls fell in love with the garden at first sight.
"Hi," I answered her. My voice was rough, I hadn't talked most of the day or yesterday. Vera turned around and sat next to me. As she did our shoulders brushed, I could feel the heat from the sun on her it felt good. I scooted closer to her and felt relived when she didn't move away.
She turned to me, "What are doing?" I shook my head, "Just....thinking." She probed further, "About what?" "Wolf problems," I said a little too sharply. It didn't seem to bother her. She just continued, "So tell me about them." I groaned,"I don't want to burden you with my problems." "Please," she whispered. For some reason it felt like I had to answer her. Must be a mate thing. "Fine." She smiled and leaned her arm on the bench table.
I sighed, "My pack wants me to be Alpha." She nodded, "And you don't want to be. Right?" I continued, "Yeah, I just don't want all that weight on me. It just feels like too much." She smiled, "I get it. I'm the oldest in my family, and it's always up to me fix things or decide them. You don't always want to be the leader." I nodded. Finally someone who understands. "Yes. And now they've given me one month to find my mate. Once the month is done, I have to be Alpha. It's so.....frustrating." Vera laughed at my choice of words. I smiled at her. She looked lighter than the first day I saw her. How could someone get more and more beautiful each day?
"Have you found her yet?" I was confused,"What?" She smiled, "Your mate of course." "Oh that. Yes I have," I answered. From the corner of my eye I saw her smile falter. I almost laughed at her reaction. "Though I haven't told her yet," I added smoothly. Her smile was still their, but it didn't reach her eyes. I didnt like that. "Do you know why not?" I asked Vera. She shook her head no. "It's because I'm afraid of what her reaction might be. She could reject me you know," I made my voice sound worried. It worked because in the next second she was laughing openly. I smiled.
When she was done I got up and held the red rose out to her. "I'm done talking about me. How about I take you where there are even more flowers where we could sit and enjoy the view." Her eyes lit up immediately. "Really," she asked me. I nodded, "Really."
She took the rose I offered and brought it to her nose.
