Chapter 8: Meeting the Man In Question

Several doors along the hallway concealed offices from which bright lights could be seen. What Feng had said was true; there really were a lot of researchers working at night here.

A moment passed, and Feng suddenly stopped and said, "I've already asked on your behalf. Recently, A Province's museum and our museum exchanged exhibits, and we got some Ming dynasty jade artifacts. Mister Jing has been researching them in the storeroom all week. Have you thought about what it would be good to say once you get in there?"

"Uh... I'll say that I'm your cousin and I'm very interested in jade artifacts, and that I want to ask whether he could answer a few questions I have about old jade for me. Will that work?"

"Oh, that's not a bad idea."

Her next plan was to invite Helan to give a lecture on ancient jade in the name of the Chinese Students' Union of T Lake University. Since the museum Since the museum had a close cooperative relationship with the local cultural and educational departments, it generally didn't reject invitations from the school. After the lecture, she would take the opportunity to tell Helan Jing that the school newspaper wanted to give him a simple interview. The circulation of the school newspaper was typically only a few hundred copies so she believed that Helan Jing wouldn't mind. As for whether the interview would "accidentally" end up reprinted by an external newspaper, it was hard to say.

After going through the cumbersome security checks, Feng Xinhua and Pipi entered the storeroom together.

Pointing to a figure not too far away, on the other side of a huge mass of cabinets, Feng whispered, "There he is, go."

She didn't know why, but Pipi suddenly felt a little nervous. She didn't move right away, instead choosing to hide behind a cabinet and observe him.

From behind, Helan Jing looked like a young man. Even though it was cold outside, he wore only a thin linen shirt which revealed sections of pale white skin. He was a little thin, but not weak, and he looked cleaner than any man Pipi had ever seen. He was like a piece of white jade that had been polished for years, to the point of spotlessness.

The warehouse consisted of a group of cabinets. The space was very large, and there was an empty section in the middle where an ancient square table and circular stool had been placed, surrounded by several sets of elegant, well-crafted sofas. Helan Jing sat in a chair by the window, holding a pencil and pointing it at the carved jade cup on the mahogany coffee table, carefully sketching it in his sketchbook. In addition to the jade cup, the coffee table had a small magnifying glass and a cigar-sized condenser on it.

Suddenly, Pipi was hit with the scent of deep mountain ferns on a dewy morning. She made a small noise in the back of her throat and found that Helan whirled around, ripped the sunglasses out of his pocket and put them on his face. He then turned to look at Pipi.
