Chapter 12: A small child
Ray didn't know what to tell her. Like almost every other person in the world, he too knew what horrors existed in the world but they couldn't grasp the depth of it until they saw it with their own eyes.
Ray had witnessed a complete darker side of life tonight.
He felt like a child; a small child who had cried in front of this woman sitting beside him last night just because he couldn't get some shiny new toy. Although Aera's rejection was filled with the cruelty of some other kind of pain; still what he saw today was a fresh experience for him. What he went through that night was sure to remain with him for the rest of his life.
The grim determination on Ye-Jin's face and her lack of any kind of expression when she was dealing with such a serious situation amazed him. He was more surprised by the fact that she didn't show even an ounce of panic when she was cradling the little frail girl's head in her lap. It clearly showed her experience and it unknowingly didn't sit well with him that Ye-Jin was constantly exposed to such brutality of the society.
He was amazed by what Ye-Jin did apart from teaching. They were worlds apart. He was brought out by his musings when Ye-Jin stood up staring at someone who was coming towards them.
Ye-Jin: brother?!
Shin Jay: (hugging her) Jin! you are fine right? Sooru called and told me what happened tonight.
Ye-Jin: yes bro, I am fine. (Pointing to Ray) Thanks to Ray, he helped me and also kept me occupied. Ray this is Shin Jay-
Shin Jay: (gratefully) Thank you for being with her Ray.
Ray: that's what friends are for Mr Shin.
Shin Jay: (chuckling) my wife would have killed me if something had happened to her little sister.
Ye-Jin: (embarrassed) bro! it was not a big deal like firing, goons or something, stop being dramatic.
Shin Jay: Can't help myself Ye-Jin. I am glad you haven't hurt yourself like always when you get mad.
Ye-Jin: (flushing) bro! That was one time. Stop embarrassing me.
Shin Jay: (patting her head) I am sorry but you didn't tell me you were friends with Ray?
Ye-Jin: (looking back and forth between them owlishly) you guys know each other?
Ray: (smirking) I am world star Ye-Jin-
Ye-Jin: that's not what I meant. Do you know each other personally?
Shin Jay: (nodding) your bro-in-law is an awesome lawyer Ye-Jin.
Ye-Jin: (rolling her eyes) whatever!
Ray: (chuckling) I am his client. In fact, most of our company is.
Shin Jay: and I am honoured by it.
They would have continued their light banter if they weren't interrupted by Sooru who came out looking for Ye-Jin.
Sooru: sis! the doctor is asking for you.
He successfully cut in through the momentary light mood. He had a grim expression on his face as if he had seen death.
The other two guys followed Ye-Jin into the hospital where the doctor was waiting for them in front of the operation theatre.
Her face went completely blank out of practice whenever delivering or receiving the bad news.
Ye-Jin: yes doctor?
Doc: the good news is that the girl gave birth to a baby girl.
Ye-Jin: and?
Doc: we couldn't save the girl she had suffered from a lot of internal bleeding-
Chapter 13: Sarang
Ye-Jin didn't hear the rest of what the doctor said. Her ears were ringing and she felt nauseous all over. Her eyes teared up at the loss of another innocent child. It wasn't her first time listening to these but she felt quite disturbed either way.
She felt someone grip her hand. She looked up to see Ray looking equally nauseated and about to pass out. She reassured him by pressing down on his hand holding hers tightly. He nodded once at her in assurance and again faced the doctor who was now walking away with Shin Jay for further formalities.
A moment later a nurse came out of the operating room holding a small bundle in her arms. She looked at the trio standing in front of the room and her face turned down in a small frown.
Nurse: you want to hold the baby?
Ye-Jin could do nothing but only nod.
The nurse carefully handed her the small blue bundle. The small baby who had been born into the world only a few minutes ago was fully awake and looking at Ye-Jin with wonder-filled eyes. A small tear escaped Ye-Jin's eyes when she saw the beautiful child.
Ye-Jin: (whispering) she is beautiful.
Nurse: who is the father?
Sooru: we don't know grandma.
There was utter silence at that question and Sooru's answer. The girl who died giving birth to this child was still a minor who had been wronged.
They weren't sure how to answer and Ray saved the situation by asking Ye-Jin to let him hold the baby. She handed the child to him but still kept a hold on the child not wanting to let go yet.
Nurse: well then have you guys decided a name for her?
Ray: Sarang-
Ye-Jin: (nodding in agreement) yes she is Sarang.
Nurse: (agreeing with them and taking the child back) Ye-Jin you have a very nice boyfriend there. (Smiling at Ray) I am also your fan, by the way.
Ye-Jin: (flushing) he is only my friend madam!
The nurse walked away rolling her eyes clearly in disbelief while Ye-Jin and Ray were clearly embarrassed.
Ray: (putting his hands in the pocket) it's always nice to meet a fan. So, what next?
Ye-Jin: (looking at him earnestly) I think you should go back now-
Ray: (cutting her in the middle) b-but-
Ye-Jin: no listen to me I am saying this for your sake. This will take some time to get sorted which involves police and media. Both are really not a good combination for you.
Ray: (hanging his head) ok I understand. Please keep me updated. I want to help in any possible way.
Ye-Jin: (nodding) I will call you when I reach home tonight and tell you the rest of the happenings which will definitely occur here.
Ray: (walking backwards) I will be counting on it. Good night Sooru.
Sooru: Night bro!
