Chapter 43: You Shall See
When Thursday came around, Sun Mei took a taxi to Lily's school to pick her up. Mr. Wu had headed to the studio earlier that day to make sure everything was in order, so her job was to get Lily and meet him and Jenny there.
While she was in the taxi, she daydreamed about Mr. Wu posing for one of those saucy book covers. She believed that if she got used to the thought, she wouldn't stare too much when she saw it happen in action.
She was wrong…
When the driver pulled over in front of Lily's school, Sun Mei noticed a small crowd. Several parents were gathered around a woman in the middle of the school yard.
Upon closer inspection, she realized it was Karen.
Sun Mei sighed and got out of the car reluctantly. As she approached the group of parents waiting to pick up their children, she could hear Karen talk animatedly.
"Mr. Wu, bless his heart, had frozen completely. If I hadn't snapped into action, who knows what would have happened…"
"Someone else would have snapped into action," said Sun Mei. "You are not the only nice person in the world. You are just the only one who likes to brag about it so much."
Everyone's heads immediately turned in her direction.
"But thanks for giving Mr. Wu and Lily a ride, I guess…" Sun Mei added awkwardly.
Thankfully, the bell rang just in time, saving her from having to face Karen. As soon as she found Lily amid the river of kids flowing out of the classrooms, she led her away from the curious crowd.
Lily, who was overjoyed that she was going to see Jenny again so soon, followed her to the taxi without making a fuss.
"Is mommy waiting for me?" she asked as Sun Mei fastened the seatbelt around her waist.
"I'm sure she is," she said.
"I hope she is…" she thought.
When the taxi left them at the address Mr. Wu had given Sun Mei, a young woman was waiting for them there.
"Hello, I'm Veronica," she introduced herself. "I'm Mr. Wu's assistant. You must be Sun Mei."
Veronica was an immaculately dressed young woman in a pencil skirt and a white shirt. Her dark hair was tied to the back of her neck, and she was wearing a pair of black prescription glasses. All in all, she looked like a true professional.
Lily immediately seemed to recognize her. "Hi, Veronica!" she said loudly.
"Hi, Lily!" Veronica answered just as enthusiastically. "Your daddy told me you had quite the adventure a few days ago."
Lily looked confused. "What adventure?" she asked Sun Mei.
"She means the hospital," Sun Mei whispered to her.
"Oh!" Lily nodded. "Yes, that was fun!" she told Veronica politely.
Sun Mei almost laughed when she saw the look on Veronica's face.
"Where's daddy?" Lily asked without missing a beat.
"I'm taking you right to him," Veronica said with a tight smile. "I'm afraid he can't walk out on the street the way he looks right now…"
"What do you mean?" Sun Mei asked.
Veronica unexpectedly winked. "You shall see…"
