The Lovesick Friend
A couple of days later, Sun Mei had her first visitor. After asking Mr. Wu for permission, she invited Yu Zan over. She had not been allowed to have friends over at Mrs. Lin's house, so she felt really happy about this opportunity.
As soon as Yu Zan walked in, she was stunned into silence. Sun Mei waved her hand in front of her friend's face.
"Earth to Yu Zan?" she said teasingly.
"Girl, you got a serious upgrade!" Yu Zan exclaimed. "This is a palace! What does this man do for a living again?"
"He publishes books," answered Sun Mei.
"Did he publish Fifty Shades Of Gray?" Yu Zan asked incredulously.
Sun Mei grimaced. "You need to read some better books."
"No, you need to read some erotica." Yu Zan smiled slyly.
Sun Mei blushed. Her non-existent love life was a recurring inside joke between them. Yu Zan fell in love with a different guy every week, but Sun Mei, who had lived with her parents her whole life and had been locked up in Mrs. Lin's house for two months, had never even been out on a date.
"Where's the housekeeper?" Yu Zan asked suspiciously. "Does she even exist? Or do you have to clean this entire house by yourself?"
Sun Mei smiled. "It's her day off. But you might meet Mr. Wu. He called and said he'll stop by to pick up some papers he forgot."
Yu Zan rolled her eyes. "Who cares about the old man? Does this place have a pool?"
Sun Mei smiled conspiratorially. "In the backyard."
"Now we're talking!"
Sun Mei and Yu Zan made two smoothies in the kitchen and carried them over to the backyard, where they sat down next to the pool and talked like schoolgirls while they dipped their toes in the water.
"Next time, I'll bring a swimsuit," said Yu Zan. "I'm so jealous of you!"
"What are you jealous of?" Sun Mei asked as she took a sip of her smoothie. "You live with a nice family."
"I know, but you live with a rich family." Yu Zan winked at her.
"The Lins were also rich, but they were…" Sun Mei trailed off.
"Jerks," said Yu Zan. "You might as well say it."
Before Sun Mei could object and defend the two little boys who had been nothing but nice to her, she saw Mr. Wu open the back door out of the corner of her eye. He was wearing his signature work suit and dark tie, but his hair was in its usual messy state.
"Who is that?" Yu Zan asked in a whisper. "Do you have a security guard too?"
Sun Mei frowned in confusion. "What? No, that's Mr. Wu."
"Are you kidding?" Yu Zan exclaimed. "He looks like a teen celebrity!"
"Hush!" Sun Mei elbowed Yu Zan in the ribs as Mr. Wu walked over.
"Hello, girls." Mr. Wu greeted them with a smile. "Having fun?"
"Yes, Mr. Wu." Sun Mei smiled back before she said, "This is my friend, Yu Zan."
"Nice to meet you, Yu Zan." Mr. Wu shook her friend's hand politely.
"Pleasure," Yu Zan managed to say as she shook the man's hand in a daze. She looked like she was about to drool all over Mr. Wu's white shirt.
"I unfortunately have to go. I'll be back with Lily later at noon. You two have fun!" Mr. Wu said before he walked away.
Yu Zan stared at his retreating back until he disappeared into the house. Soon, they heard his car roar to life and drive away.
"I think I fell in love…" Yu Zan said slowly.
Sun Mei laughed. "Again? It's the third time this week!"
