Chapter 7: 7 Welcome to the Accademy
The first thing he noticed when they left the portal was a rather tall, cylindrical building in the distance, it rose far above everything else, and was definitely the focal point. Circling around the building were several other smaller buildings. Followed by large amounts of open space, separated into different sections.
The academy was different from what John expected. From what he had heard he imagined that the place would be a militaristic university type environment. The reality was far different from that, there was a sense of military background, and it definitely had a learning environment feel, but it was far more laid back then he could have imagined.
They were led to one of the small buildings that surrounded the spire. Their recruiter spoke as they walked "The marksmanship college is different from the other 4 universities as it is a lot more relaxed in the way that we train our students. Every member of the university will undergo basic marksmanship training, which will lead to the skill our university is known for, marksmanship. This training will be for four hours a day, starting at 8 a.m. before that will be physical training for two hours. This training should increase your over all stats. After lunch will be free training, in which you can take part in any of the other 5 paths training or sub training of marksmanship. "
The man led us into a small building, with a total of four rooms. "These will be your dorms, males on one side and females on the other. Their is also a common room, that covers the basic needs you will have, couches, tables, and even a radio. If you guys are wondering a radio is a device that we recently renovated from the old world, that transmits sound over air waves. It often plays music or information. The last room is the bathroom, that should obvious. Fraternizing is allowed, but the boys can't enter the girls room and visa versa." He pointed to a group of runes on the entry way to either door. "Even if you tried these runes only allow those of the specified gender into the rooms" he demonstrated by attempting to enter the girls room, being blocked by a transparent barrier.
"Classes will officially begin in the morning, however this afternoon will be used to test your aptitude towards the subclasses in which we offer, which are the same as the other universities. The results of the test will show your optimal placement in a subclass, in which you will be forced to attend. However, if there is another subclass in which you have interest you will be allowed to join in on that class as well. The results will be a mediocre ability for the class, unlike the class and subclass sections. We do encourage you to join one, as a different set of skills will greatly enhance your effectiveness. These three classes, your Major, your minor, and your auxiliary, will be absorbed into the cultivation method of your class, so as long as you practice and cultivate properly you will advance in these areas. "
One of the boys the tall one spoke up "so we don't get to decide our minor? "
The man nodded "that's correct, it will be decided during a testing stage, which will determine the correct path for you to take, the test will automatically awaken an ability from the correct path when you have completed it. Think about it as a mini special dungeon, the rewards you get will be a class skill for the subclass you will be put into."
"So like an aptitude test?"
The man hesitated before answering "No.. this test is unique. You will go through a series of tests, from all five categories. Eventually marksmanship will be taken out of the equation and your minor will be decided. From their you will go through something like an aptitude test, deciding if you have more talent in your minor or your major, which will decide if your minor supplements your major or if your major supplements your minor, and how far your minor will progress. In rare circumstances your minor will actually take the place of your major, though you would stay at this academy. In the case of this your minor would leak over into your auxiliary school, effectively giving you two majors."
John couldn't help himself as his mouth opened and words came out of his own accord. "Wouldn't that limit the person more than having 3 paths to follow?"
The man shrugged "Yes and no, having two majors is something that many people could wish for, it gives you full access to an additional cultivation paths, instead of partial access to two. There are trade offs, but when isn't there? For example a ranged armament has great potential in marksmanship, but if they follow the soldier path than they become much more rounded, and have more potential in a melee situation, even though their ranged techniques fall behind. If that person minors in marksmanship they would only fall slightly behind a person who majors in marksmanship, but far exceed us in melee combat. The same person who entered the marksmanship path and minored in soldiering would have greater potential with their ranged weapon, but their body would be physically weaker than if they majored in soldiering. If that person's minor leaked over into their auxiliary skill they would be equally good at soldiering as they were at marksmanship. "
The man paused before continuing "now if that same person did not have their minor leak over they would have an auxiliary school. His soldering would still fall behind a regular soldier, however he would have some minor skills from with magic, beast mastery, or assassination to assist. A soldier with marksmanship might be a tough existence, but a marksmanship soldier with magic bullets can be a good counter. This of course goes for any combination. One is not better than the other, they just have different specialties, and someone with a double major is more specialized."
"Further your minor will be easy to figure out, as your class should give you hints." He pointed at John "for example he is an arcane marksman. His minor will likely be magic. As for his auxiliary skills, it will be at his discretion, but I'm sure he already knows where he is going to go."
The man looked around the room. "My name for those of you interested is "Axel Rose, and I will be your instructor for marksmanship. If there are no more questions would you please follow me and I will bring you the testing facility."
