Chapter 4: Chapter 4: System

Ray Levine, Savior's best friend, and the Party's Archer. She was the second daughter of the head of the Levine family, a family known for their sharpshooters and purple hair ever since the Church was established. In this world, your family is identified by your hair color, and the shade of that color determines your rank in that family. The darker one's hair color is, the higher ranked they are in their family. As a result of her being the second daughter of the head of the Levine family, her hair is dark purple.

>>>

Spotting Ray underneath the rubble horrified me. I brush most of the rubble aside, revealing Ray's body up to her torso. Placing my pointer and middle finger around her neck to check her pulse, I sighed in relief.

Thank Heavens. She's still alive.

Suddenly, Ray's eyes shot open. Her forehead bleeding, and her vision was blurry. Making out who I was, she coughed. A cloud of dust came out of her mouth from being buried under the rubble and ashes.

"Andrew?" She spoke weakly.

"Ray, please refrain from speaking," I said hastily, whipping out my staff, "I'm going to heal you right now."

Coughing out a mouthful of blood, Ray's usually cheerful face turned to one of anguish and disparity. While I was trembling with fear. There were still some civilians who were trying to run, but it was futile. Those that ran were swooped up in a Wyvern's claw the next moment. Some were buried under the rubble, half alive. At the time, I could not save all of them...I was just a weak healer.

"Savior," she began to sniffle, "she tried...she tried, but..."

"What?"

"The demon's wyvern got her in one of its claws." She spoke, trying to raise her limp arm.

"You mean the red one in the center of the horde?" I asked, pointing to the sky as I cast a healing spell on her.

A soft white glow emitted from my staff which I held towards Ray. This was a basic healing spell meant it would only heal flesh wounds, not recover body parts. The most I could do was stop Ray's bleeding; then, she would need to recover on her own for the rest of the healing process.

"Yes...Savior thought she could take on the whole wyvern horde on her own until..." She sniffled some more while tugging the sleeve of my windbreaker. Staining them with blood and dirt.

"I know...I know." I said in my shaky voice.

"Not even the gods can save her anymore...it's over, Andrew. The Church has sent the Cardinal, but not even he is powerful enough to stop this horde all at once." She wailed.

Ray was right. The Cardinal was a being more powerful than Savior, but only until Savior had unlocked her true power. Unfortunately, even with the Cardinal, there is still only a slim chance that he will be able to drive the horde away. Suddenly, Ray became delusional. Stretching her barely moveable hands to the sky, she laughs hysterically.

"I see the Heavens!" She yells, "They have come to whisk my soul away from the land of the living! This is...the end for me. Oh, how I've only lived for seventeen years. I'm not ready! I'm not ready!"

Eventually, Ray knocked herself out from all that ranting, but she was still alive. In hopes that the Church would arrive soon, I prayed that they find and recover her body. Leaving her there, knowing that I did what I could, I continued to run. I knew I was probably going to die, so what did I have to lose? Nothing. I would rather die saving Savior, the hope for the world's survival, instead of doing nothing for my own selfish survival. But what can I do? Suddenly a voice rang in my ears.

"Conditions to Activate has been fulfilled." said a monotone female voice.

"What!" I exclaimed.

"I am the Combat AI, Iris. You have been selected as the owner of the Hero Game. Do you accept?" the voice continued.

"Where is this voice coming from?" I ask, turning my head left and right.

"I am here. On your neck." It replied in a monotone voice.

I glance down at my neck to find my necklace glowing. I could feel its glow pulsating against my chest.

"Grandpa's heirloom?" I furrowed my brows.

I remove the necklace and place it in the palm of my hand. My grandfather gave it to me before he died three years ago. It was a crystal with a string threaded through that my grandfather found and made into a necklace during one of his adventures to Niligo cave when he was my age. Grandfather plucked it off a bigger crystal, and it has been his lucky charm ever since. I remember him telling me that it was special and that when the time came, it would guide me to an 'Answer'. Apparently, now was the time when it activated.

With no time to think, I asked Iris,

"Can I save that girl in the wyvern's hand if I do?"

There was a small pause, but Iris replied in its robotic voice.

"Of course, Healer Andrew."

"I accept! If it can save a life, I'm willing to sacrifice anything to protect it."

"Very well," Iris said, "Hero Game activated. Please look at your status for further information."

Suddenly a transparent holographic screen, almost like an RPG game, appeared in front of me. I was startled.

"Iris, can anyone else see this screen?" I asked.

"No," Iris said, "only the owner of the game can see the screen. the information you see right now is your current status or abilities. To the left of your screen, there is a list of Quests. Every time you finish a quest, you will earn a reward. Currently, you have one quest, which is to save Eren Mandell. Quest Level: Difficult. Additionally, since you are the first owner of the game, you receive a complementary armor set. The set will be sent to the Game Inventory, which is the tab on your right."

I press the Game Inventory tab and check out the armor set. When I pressed on its description, I was stunned.

That last part...Iris, you do not need to make that so blunt.

"My job as an AI is to assist you, my owner, and by being honest, I am simply performing my job," Iris spoke with that bluntness.

"Forget about it now," I yell impatiently, "Iris, how do I equip the armor set?"

"Just tap the icon in the Game Inventory and it will ask you whether you want to equip the armor set or not."

Following her directions, I switch to the Game Inventory tab and click on the icon. The system then asked:

[Do you want to equip this armor set?]

"Yes!"

Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Wyvern Slaughterer

The day when I accepted the Hero Game System, changed my life forever.

It felt surreal as I equipped the Silver Knight armor. A blinding light surrounded my body. Hatsu, who immediately jumped off my shoulder, landed beside me and squinted its eyes with curiosity. As the light faded, I was now enveloped in shiny silver armor.

I glanced into a broken window and saw my reflection. Wearing the heavy armor filled me with warm energy and unfamiliar power. Surprisingly, each plate felt like a natural extension of my body. The armor had a noble feel to it, and the clinking of the silver plates could be heard with every movement. A velvet scarf with golden embroidery and traces of mana wrapped around my neck. The helmet had a crimson mane on top, fluttering in the wind. In my left hand, I held a giant broadsword with golden engravings from the Dark Era.

"Thanks, Iris." I smiled underneath the helmet with appreciation.

"There is no need to thank me," she said indifferently, "it is my job to assist the Owner of the Hero Game System."

I feel more self-assured as I approach the center of the wyvern horde. Using my vast amount of mana, I boost myself off the ground and soar into the boundless, blood-red sky, creating a massive crater on the ground. It felt exhilarating to be so high up.

Is this what it felt like to fly?

As I continue, the wyverns turn their attention towards me, attracted to the high levels of mana in my armor. By consuming things with high mana capacity, monsters grow stronger. It's possible that my armor's high mana capacity is why the wyverns are now focused on me.

Gripping the broadsword tightly, I swing at a wyvern and easily slice it in two, feeling empowered by my newfound skill. The wyvern's black blood splatters onto my armor, and the armor absorbs both the blood and the monster's body, which disappears without a trace.

Suddenly system notifications rang in my ear.

[You have killed a wyvern]

[You have gained wyvern skill: Flame Magic]

[You have Level Upped]

[All stats increase by 1]

[Due to 10x multiplier on armor, all stats increase by 10 temporarily]

[You have Level Upped]

...

The notifications continued, but I did not care. I kept slicing at each wyvern, each swing getting lighter, stronger, and faster with only one thought in mind.

Save Savior.

With every swing, I took down a wyvern, and with flight, I surpassed the speed of sound.

Then an idea popped into my head.

Let's try something else.

According to the system, I could change my weapon's form with my will. I closed my eyes briefly, thinking about the weapon I wanted to weld.

Something that can pierce multiple wyverns at once.

Suddenly, my broadsword glowed as it became skinnier yet longer and more round. In my hand was a long silver lance. Instinctively, I 'lightly' threw the spear at the wyverns, but I guess my 'lightly' was actually really strong. Before I knew it, the spear had pierced twenty wyverns, and its momentum stopped when it finally skewered three into a building. The wyverns that were hit by the spear froze in midair before, as if time stopped, then vaporized into nothing. As they vaporized, the spear pulled itself out of the building and flew back to my hand in an instant.

Moments of slashing later, I noticed I had slaughtered over a hundred low-ranking wyverns, and I had gained some of their skills.

Glancing at the Game Screen, I check out which skills I have obtained. Scrolling through the long list of skills, I realized I had some duplicate skills.

"Hey, Iris," I began, "is it possible to combine skills to increase skill level besides just using the skill over and over again?

"Yes." She replies indifferently again.

"How?"

"Just press on the skill you want to level up, and if there are any duplicates, the skill level will increase by one."

Once again, following her directions, I press on the Skill I want to improve. I chose Basic Wind Blade since it has the most duplicates. Pressing on the skill, the system notifies me that I have duplicates.

"Do you wish to integrate duplicate Skills?" It asked.

"Yes."

[Integration successful]

[The Skill [Basic Wind Blade] has been upgraded to [Intermediate Wind Blade[Lv. 5]]

[All stats increase by 15]

[Due to 10x multiplier on armor, all stats temporarily increase by 150]

[Do you wish to execute the Skill]

"Yes!" I responded in an enthusiastic tone.

[Please switch to broadsword, rapier, or staff to use the following skill]

Pulling my spear out of the building, I change its form to a broadsword and activate the skill. Infusing pure white-colored mana into the sword, without holding back, I take a full crescent swing. A white blade of wind the size of a tree severs rushes towards the several rows of flying wyverns, all of which vaporized in seconds. At this point, I was not surprised by the power of the armor. Feeling more confident, I glance up at the demon general riding on the Red Wyvern. His eyes met mine with a strange intensity. Holding up his hand, the remaining Wyverns halt their attacks and then spread out, allowing the Red Wyvern to fly towards me. I braced for impact, but I did not need to. The purple-horned demon abruptly stopped in front of me. His purple eyes were filled with a sort of intimidation, and my heart nearly stopped, yet he gave off the aura of a prideful general who had commanded his forces with such organization that took him to the top.

Standing on the back of the Red Wyvern that is now face to face with me, he cocked a grin full of malice and ill intent. Even without moving, I instinctively knew that the battle had just begun.

"Greetings, Knight," he spoke with a heavy voice making cold sweat drip down my neck. Out of fear, I said nothing.

"Oh," he formed a little 'O' with his mouth, "not the talkative kind. I see..."

Clapping his hands, he maniacally laughed. Folding one arm under the other, he sighed.

"I applaud you for being able to beat most of the Wyverns, my Wyvern army. They are a bit unintelligent, yet they follow my every command. When they do, they are quite ferocious killers."

I still said nothing. On the outside, I seem fine. However, internally, I felt like shit. Every bone in my body trembled with fear before the powerful demon.

"Well, that doesn't matter as I've got your Savior. She put up a good fight, I must admit. Unfortunately, she was just too weak. Is that the best you inferior races can do?"

Suddenly, I felt the surge of emotions opening up inside of me were about to explode at any moment. My hand formed into a fist with my nails digging into my sweating skin.

Don't you dare say that about Savior!

"I mean, how could such a weak girl be this world's Savior if she couldn't even take on a 'small' horde of barbaric wyverns." He cackled.

I look down at Savior's limp body, which is being held in the claws of the wyvern. Her armor was broken, her golden rapier in two pieces, her head bent back almost to the point of her neck breaking. The azure eyes of life, which gave 'hope' to people, have faded to a murky blue of despair, and her long black hair had been ripped off.

How shameless. I thought, biting my lip.

"Are you sure you are not the Savior? To me, you are beyond stronger than this little girl." He mocked.

"No," I spoke in the husky voice created by the helmet to disguise my identity, "I am merely a servant. A Holy Knight."

"Oh, so you can talk!" The demon laughed.

"I only serve her as I have sworn my loyalty." I continued to keep up my persona with a stern expression behind the helmet.

"A Knight and a Princess! How cliché! You, Knight, are saving your damsel in distress?! How wonderful! I would like to see how you do that because I, the great Berith of the 72 Demons, would like to duel over this mistress of yours."

He pulls out a longsword from his sheath. I could see a faint black aura emitting from its sharp blade. It was dangerous. Holding my broadsword, I got into a ready stance. Gulping down my saliva, I mustered up a little bit of courage and declared:

"I accept your challenge."

Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Berith

I was at a disadvantage, I was not fighting one versus one rather, a two versus one. Berith had his Red Wyvern, while I had a seemingly overpowered cheat, the Hero Game System. However, I only got the system not even two hours ago, so I do not have many skills besides the ones I got from killing Berith's wyverns. Plus, the armor set is only at Purple Gold Rank. Would it be sufficient to defeat Berith?

Berith was a high demon general from the Central Continent with many years of battle experience, plus half of his wyvern army was still alive. He could be a despicable coward and force the rest of his army at me, but why did he decide to call them back? I just could not understand, my brows furrowing in confusion. Weren't demons despicable beings? After all, Berith wasn't fighting me one-on-one, so I guess that can still be considered despicable.

"You know," he began unsheathing his longsword, "I've always loved to fight, but I have not found a worthy opponent in fifty years. Can you, perhaps, quench my thirst for battle?"

Not knowing my opponent's skill level and being insecure about my own, I choose to bluff. I needed to stall some time in order to level up all the skills I got from slaughtering Berith's Wyverns.

"We'll see, I suppose," I spoke in a monotone voice, brandishing my sword.

"Haha," he snickered, "I like you already, Mr. Knight. Let me recite something. On this glorious battlefield reigned by crimson pillars of flames, ashes fall from the sky like snow. Both are beautiful yet possess hidden darkness to them. Oh, the deities of war of Heaven and Hell, which of us contenders will be favored by you? Will our Demonic Empire reign over this battlefield of darkness, or will the Knight pierce the Heavens, vanquish this sick darkness from the burning plains of Greenfield, and save his damsel allowing his country to continue their reign? I wonder, who will be victorious?"

To be honest, I am quite sick of his extravagant rhetoric. Thanks to his monologue, I was able to upgrade a few skills for insurance.

[Flame Magic] has been upgraded to Intermediate Level 7. [Petrification] has been upgraded to Beginner level 8. [Poison] has been upgraded to Intermediate Level 1. Finally, [Wind Step] had been upgraded to Intermediate Level 3. Thus, for every level I raise a skill, all my stats go up by one for a total of 49 increase in stats. Additionally, with the 10x multiplier on the armor, all my stats increase by 490, Heaven Defying!

"Now, Mr. Knight, shall we begin?" Berith asked in an arrogant tone.

"Let's get this over with."

Berith decided to make the first move. Holding my broadsword tightly, I readied a defensive stance. Charging at me like a wild bull, Berith swung his longsword, which I blocked effortlessly, but the energy from each strike made a deafening ring in my ears. The power from his first strike created a strong gust of wind. The wind created from the collision made a crater in the ground below. I spot Hatsu only centimeters from the newly formed crater. In relief of surviving the attack, Hatsu laid on its back. Meanwhile, the Red Wyvern just stayed where it was.

It's not attacking? Why? Anyways, Berith is truely honorable if that's the case.

"Your strong, Mr. Knight! You blocked my first attack. Not many can do that!" Berith raised a brow with a hint of astonishment.

Then, the next moment, his face contorted into one of a crazed beast. His pupils shrunk, and he went into a frenzy, swiftly waving his sword, dealing one heavy blow after another. With my speed buffed drastically by the armor, I manage to parry his attack with the cold blade aura only centimeters away from my face.

"I knew it, you are my fated opponent. The one who can revive my lust for battle!"

That was scary. He's fast. I thought as sweat trickled down my face, but I had to continue to bluff to make it out of this one.

"If you want to land a hit on me, you'll have to try better than that!" I yelled, parrying his sword once more with a bit more strength.

Feeling the excitement of the battle yet intimidated, Berith jumped back onto his Red Wyvern.

"That was just a warmup, Mr. Knight!" He spat, not wanting to lose against a 'no named Knight'.

Black and golden sparks flew off our swords just like the clash between Light and Dark. Every time Berith took the initiative to attack, I parried him just as effortlessly as his last strikes. His strikes were swift and heavy at the same time, and it did not seem like he would tire himself out soon. If so, then I will have to strike back.

"What's wrong, Mr. Knight? Don't tell me you can't attack." He mocked as he sped toward me in an instant.

Using a bit more power to push Berith back, I readied my sword to attack.

"Very well. I will attack as you wish." I spat.

"Come on! Hit me with what you got!" He taunted, sticking up a middle finger.

Luckily I did not fall for the taunt and act rashly.

Instead, I charged up a [Wind Blade], and with a hundred percent power, I swung my broadsword at Berith, who was standing on his Red Wyvern like a clueless duck. Unfortunately, he sensed the danger in the crescent-shaped blade too late. With almost no time to defend, Berith leaped off his Red Wyvern and let the powerful [Wind Blade] cleave his ride in half. Even though he jumped off, his horn was grazed by the edge of the [Wind Blade]. Cutting off a Demon's horns was the equivalent of destroying their pride. Realizing Savior was in the Red Wyvern's claw, I instantly flew to her falling limp body. Catching her in my arms, I set her down on the ground next to Ray and Hatsu.

From below, I notice Berith's eyes widen, and his face contorted even further into an uglier expression. His broken horn resting in his hands.

"Knight," He gnashed his teeth, crushing his broken horn, "it seems that I went too easy on you."

"Well, it is your fault for underestimating me." I sneered.

Falling for my taunt, Berith's veins popped out of his head. His face red with anger and embarrassment. Holding onto his longsword, he imbues more mana into it, causing the purple engravings to light up.

"I'll kill you!" He screeched, flying towards me at top speed. His eyes bloodshot.

He plans to end it, but since he fell for my taunt, he will start attacking recklessly, but his situation is a do-or-die. So if any of his strikes graze me, even with my armor on, I could die. Then a notification appeared on the Hero Game System main screen.

[Holy Light: Active]

"Alright!" I shouted.

"Arhhhhh," Berith yelled as he swung his sword.

I must keep Savior out of harm!

Parrying it once more, I pushed Berith back five meters. Activating [Holy Light], a blinding light engulfed my sword, and with one final giant swing, I unleashed [Holy Light] at Berith. With no time to dodge, Berith was forced to take the hit. At that moment, he knew he screwed up.

"How could I, the great Berith of the 72 Demon Generals, be defeated by a mear 'Knight'?!"

"Your flaw was that you underestimated me and that you were overconfident in your own power, which led you to where you are now."

"Ha," he chuckled, "I'm glad I could die an honorable death. You have fulfilled my wish, Knight."

Suddenly, the light engulfed him and the surrounding wyverns. It was over. Then a notification from the system rang in my ears.

Feeling a sense of relief, I rush back to Savior's body. After all, Savior's welfare was the welfare of all. Ducking into a corner a block away from Savior, I unequipped the Silver Knight Armor and headed back as average Joe healer Andrew Halycon. So much happened in this one day, but for some reason, I was not fazed by it. After this is done, I will take some time and process the events, but for now, Savior is my top priority.

Pretending to look exhausted, I ran back to Savior. Since Berith was defeated, the Demons have acquired a major loss. As a result, they probably won't be attacking for a while.

I arrived at the scene within ten minutes, intentionally increasing my travel time to avoid any suspicion from the Church, who would be arriving at the scene in a moment. Savior's body was still lying limply on the ground. She had her ribs broken and her long black hair yanked like weeds from a field, leaving split ends. Her complexion was pale, and she had lost a lot of blood, causing her breathing to stagger. Her silver-plated armor had some dent and scratches from the Wyvern's claw while her clothes were burnt from the flames.

Immediately, I cast [Basic Healing] on her to stop the bleeding. Now with my stats almost tripled than before, I could sustain the Healing spell for longer. After about five minutes, Savior opened her eyes. The azure glint in them was slowly returning.

Making out my face, she began to speak.

"Andrew, is that you?" She asked in bewilderment.

"Yes," I responded.

"What happened? I remembered everyone was fighting the Wyverns then... that Red Wyvern snatched me into its claws...then there was a blinding light and a figure clad in silver armor...and then- " She muttered under her breath.

Her thoughts were a mess.

"You were saved by the man in silver, and so I ran here, sensing your mana flow, and found you lying on the ground. It's over, the Wyverns have been defeated. You should rest." I reassured.

"Really?" She let out a small laugh as tears began to well in her eye, "I'm quite pathetic for a Savior, a symbol of hope selected by the Church, yet I was defeated easily by this horde of wyverns."

"You're not weak! You stood up to those wyverns when no one else would. If that isn't strong, then what does that mean?"

"What? But-" She barely audibly said as sniffled.

"In my eyes, you're the strongest person I know!"
