Chapter 1: Home

At times the way to success is simple and straightforward if not paved through hard-work and dedication.

Honesty is the best policy, next to learning working etiquettes and its hierarchical organization. One has to understand their position. Their standing in the hierarchy. In a dog eat dog world competition is fierce. Competitors pitted against each other left and right, watching their backs and their fronts for those unwelcomed surprises. It was either securing a one-step advantage to stay on top of the trade or failing to climb up the trends and fall into recession thus ruin.

The inevitable fate that is bankruptcy isn't an alien on its first rodeo. It comes with the nature of successes and losses.

For all her life, Mina Kruse hadn't thought much on her future. Her upbringing was rather fortunate. Where most starting companies fail to take lift-off, KRUSE Enterprise is one company that succeeded in challenging the fates its competitors succumbed to. The family business in many ways made certain she remain privileged.

Truthfully she couldn't recount the time the company has its struggles. She was on the dark regarding the company's matter, kept at arm's length.

Perhaps she was too young to understand it. Too soon for her to comprehend its history. Even if the question did surfaces her parents never mentioned the company's operations in the family.

Not during dinners.

Not ever.

Her desire to know more had become an obsession of hers. She entertained many hobbies and interests as a result, but none stick to satisfy her zeal.

Learning different languages had been a wonderful experience at one point that she directed her passion at studying linguistics. Eventually, she made a career out of it working abroad at a testing agency.

It's been five years and a half since she moved to Europe when Mina received a call from her mother.

Wednesday session ended fifteen minutes early that afternoon. Her students expressing their displeasure at the sudden assignment due next week. Mina assured them a ten-point bonus for completion before she left.

At a timely beat, the clacks of her heels could be heard among their chatter throughout the lecture theatre.

Mina reaches out to her purse for her phone. She taps on her screen at a notification. A text popped up. It read:

'Flight @17.15pm. '

Her pace quickens.

The flight back to Singapore has already been arranged, the itinerary sent to her via email. Mina expected the arrangements to be as smooth as acrylic. What she didn't prepare for was the immediate time constraint.

The call was sudden. She was on lunch break at the time. It took her by surprise, considering she calls the couple every now and then.

Her mother wanted Mina to return home on the first flight after work. No questions asked. Only that her grandfather had an important announcement to make.

She was hesitant at first. Of course, she had questions of her own.

She had less than an hour to pack a personal thing or two with her. There was the matter of her clothing wardrobe for the week. What will she wear? Did she even update her old clothes? There was doubt it would fit her anymore. Worry outweighs the urge and Mina obeyed her mother. A missed flight is one thing. Her mother's disapproval another.

She abandoned all hope to bring anything but on her person. A small price to pay forasmuch.

Mina dialed taxi services. It took around fifteen minutes waiting time and requested the driver to make their way to the airport. She swipes her phone on, looking up her contacts. She taps on the keypad and sent a quick text.

The drive was silent as she gets to work with browsing through stylestop. Who said there is no better way to spend time than online shopping.

Mina smiled, proud of the alternative she had figured out. Adding items to the cart and confirming her purchase lessens the tension more than she realizes had build up.
