Chapter 8: The Quest tab

"I need substantial proof and although this amount should be fine on its own, it just seems like its some type of elaborate prank of sorts." Jaune leant against the ledge, splaying his arms out and glanced towards the setting sun.

It seemed to calm his frayed nerves and put his mind in a state of ease. Silently, he propagated through his thoughts and stewed through what he had learnt just a few moments ago.

The Empyrean App had a multitude of surprising functions, Status, Options, Perks, Titles and even the Store function which he could buy skills from.

His status window was odd, different from other RPG type games out there. There was a concept of levels but no... experience points, so to speak. Instead his level was based upon achievements. If he were to accomplish hidden milestones or complete a worthy feat, whether good or bad his level would increase.

And with every increase in level, came with an increase of +1 to each of his stats. Additionally, 5 Stat points which he could distribute between his stats were also awarded.

This was a perfect boon that allowed him to grow in every area with little weakness in a specific field but at the same time, it gave him an advantage of being able to Min-Max. Except in his case, he would be simply Maxing instead of Min-Maxing.

That was the general gist of his status.

The other two aspects which were hard to believe were his Perks and his Store. Perks could only be bought with perk points which were gained every five levels or by quests. The Perks which cost a decent amount of PP were truly insane in regards to how they could help him.

The same could be said about the Store option. Its currency was Emp-Coins, which translated to Empyrean coins. Like, the Perks section, Emp-coins could also be earned through quests. The things that could be bought with Emp coins were vastly and diversely different. There were weapons, clothes, food, armor, and even skill orbs which were available as long as one had enough currency to exchange for.

Now, Jaune had carefully explored each function and was happy to note that Store function was equally as broken or, should he say, preposterous as the Perk section.

Some weapons and items were literally God-like in nature, some were demonic, and other were just downright strange.

Take for example this,

.

.

[Reality warping banana]

-Imbued with otherworldly energy, the wielder of this banana can turn every weapon an enemy has into bananas.

.

.

Useful? Perhaps. Downright stupid?

Yes.

"Sigh." Jaune sighed, the sun setting across the horizon was gradually getting dimmer and dimmer the longer Jaune stayed on the roof.

There was only one more section Jaune had to go over.

The Quest tab.

He looked down at the scroll residing within his hand. Somehow he felt like throwing away the device and forgetting about the whole thing.

Unfortunately, he wasn't willing to waste a perfectly good scroll just because a dumb app was annoying him.

"Might as well get this over with..." Jaune shrugged. He was helping no one, wasting his time like that.

He clicked on the Quest tab and read the introduction carefully.

.

.

[The Quest function has three options. Daily Quests, Main Quests and End Goal Quest.]

.

[Daily Quests]

-Preparations to becoming strong

.

[Main Quest]

-Defeat the Antagonist

.

[End Goal Quest]

-Become one with the Empyrean Force

.

.

Jaune frowned at the contents of the Quest Log. The Daily Quest and End Goal Quest made sense as the entire theme of this app was about him becoming one with whatever this cosmic force was but the thing about the Antagonist was odd.

"Screw it, I feel like starting from the bottom this time." Jaune cursed and clicked on the End Goal Quest.

.

.

[Become One with the Empyrean Force]

-Train your Heart, Mind, Body and Soul to become strong enough to withstand the merging of the cosmic energy known as the Empyrean Force, which is also your benefactor.

.

.

"Alright. Simple explanation, concise and short but at the same time, absolute bullshit." Jaune nodded sagely, reading the words. "Next."

.

.

[Defeat the Antagonist]

-The Empyrean Force wishes for your growth in every aspect, thus will create an Antagonist that rivals your power every once in a while. You, the Protagonist will defeat this being and claim rewards to better improve yourself.

.

.

"Defeat the Antagonist? Hey, App, you can't be serious, can you? You're going to create a... what, a villain for me to defeat?" Jaune voiced out, his expression incredulous.

The App responded with a notification.

.

.

[Indeed. The app shall create an Antagonist for you to defeat. The Antagonist shall challenge you in ways you will never believe to be possible and you will be tasked to kill it.]

.

.

"This is confusing, whats the point of creating an antagonist which rivals me in power? Wouldn't be simpler to just make me all powerful all at once. Instead of going through all this?" Jaune attempted to use logic to appeal to the otherworldly force.

.

.

[The Empyrean Force values growth above all things. You, are the perfect vessel. Unfortunately, you are not ready.]

.

.

"You're all powerful. Why not just create a vessel of your own to inhabit? This makes little sense. This has seriously got to be a joke..." Jaune face palmed.

The app seemed to have little sense in regard to things.

.

.

[A book of growth requires progression. Readers tend to ignore those with unlimited power. Progression requires a protagonist. Progression requires an Antagonist. You, however, are special. You have everything to lose, and everything to gain.]

.

.

"...What the hell does that even mean...?" Jaune frowned. He could only guess at what the app was trying to convey but at the end of the day... it made little sense. "Whatever. App, say I believe all this nonsense, say all of this is real, how can you be sure that I can even defeat the Antagonists? Or if I even want to?"

.

.

[In time, things shall be made clear. You WILL defeat the Antagonists. It is your fate. Your destiny. There is no if, there is no maybe, there isn't even a no. There is only Yes.]

.

.

"Sheesh. That's not ominous at all." Jaune muttered.

Jaune felt slightly incensed at the thought of having to kill anything that wasn't a Grimm but for the time being, he felt slightly helpless. If the app was truly telling the truth... Jaune shuddered. Deciding to put that thought towards the back of his mind, he went on towards the last category of quests available.

The Daily quest.

.

.

[Preparations to becoming strong]

-Perform 100 push ups

-Perform 100 sit ups

-Perform 100 squats

-Run 10 Kilometers

Rewards: 3 Stat points.

.

.

Well shit.
