Chapter 5: Burning out

The world had visibly slowed down and Jaune could see and react to everything before him. It was a surreal feeling being in this... mode.

Whatever it was...

Yang's leg was outstretched for another attack against him and Jaune, for the first time in this fight felt that he had control over the outcome.

Her movements were clear to him. He could see every tense in each of her muscles, and could tell what exactly her next more was going to be.

He wasn't sure how he knew but for the first time... everything made sense. Yang's movements were like words that one could see, flowing together and stringing sentences to create a perfect book for her fighting style.

Unfortunately...

Jaune was the reader of such a book.

For the first time in... a long time....

Jaune felt

Powerful.

Deflection upon deflection rang out, pushing away her attacks as if they were nothing. And they truly were, as long as he wasn't hit by her attacks he could control the fight. He felt like a marionette, and Yang his puppet.

Each deflection caused Yang to stumble off balance, bringing him multiple opportunities to counter attack but Jaune did no such thing.

He was instead enraptured by the scene of of this... ability. What would one do when given a taste of power? It was at this time Jaune had finally understood what someone would truly do. They would wish to stay in that state of power for as long as possible.

But Jaune felt that something wrong.

It was but a twinge in his brain at first, just when this mode began. But soon as he kept going, as he kept predicting and deflecting her attacks, throwing her off each time, the twinge in his head grew stronger, evolving into a full blown head ache.

And worse, he felt his stamina fading away from him at an exponentially faster rate than before. This... whatever this ability was... it had side effects.

And as soon as that thought rang through his mind, the ability faded away.

The motion of the world returned back to normal and Yang's fist once again met his shield pushing him backwards, forcing his body to slide to the edge of the arena.

He didn't fall however.

Idly he recognized how long the ability lasted for.

30 seconds.

He started panting like a dog almost falling to the ground as he glanced at Yang's confused face. His head felt like it was fire as well.

But somehow... he felt absolutely amazing. It was as if the world had received color from a state of black and white.

And for a second he actually registered every sensation his body delivered him. Pain, reduced stamina, pleasure of achievement, happiness, sadness...

Then, like the words straight out of a comedy, he called out.

"I surrender."

Yang's face was priceless. It started from a small frown to a full blown shock as the weight of his words hit her. And hit her they did, like a train, causing her guard to break and motions of frustration in her inability to hit him, blowing up to full force.

"What?! No! Why are you surrendering!?"

Jaune chuckled, somehow feeling as if an odd weight had been lifted from his shoulder.

"You've won Yang. Your stamina far surpasses mine and if I continue im likely to pass out. Haha!"

"You... what the hell was that?" Yang shouted clearly angered at this point.

"Sorry?"

"What do you mean sorry? You're telling me that from the moment I stepped into this arena you had me wrapped around your finger the whole time?!"

"Er what?" Jaune was confused, what exactly was she on about?

"...I'll remember this, Jaune." Yang gritted her teeth, her eyes burning in cold fury.

In truth Jaune had no clue about what his actions meant to Yang. In that span of thirty seconds, Yang seemed to have gotten the wrong impression from him.

Yang believed that Jaune was looking down upon her. Firstly, when he entered the arena, Yang was dominating the fight, throwing him around like a rag doll and reducing his aura very quickly. Just as Yang believed that the fight was in her hand however, Jaune suddenly started deflecting each and every one of her attacks like they were nothing.

In that span of 30 seconds, Jaune's eyes to Yang was one that was mocking her. They seemed to tell her that whatever she threw at him was useless and her abilities that she had prided herself on were practically fodder to him.

Frustration had boiled up inside her and just as she felt like her semblance was about to activate, Jaune surrendered.

Yang believed that Jaune had been toying with her, trying give her a false sense of confidence before knocking her down.

She felt that Jaune was truly a piece of sh*t!

And to think, he had the gall to surrender when he was clearly controlling the fight! Unacceptable! She would show him!

Jaune however had no clue what Yang was thinking, all he was sure about was that something incredible had happened to him and he was fairly certain that it may never happen again.

His head ache had already started to recede away so Jaune carefully combed his memory to think about what had occurred during the fight.

What was that mode? If he could remember correctly, there was some sort of pinging noise that resounded from his scroll.

Curious, he decided to check his scroll. What he saw caused his eyebrows to narrow in suspicion because the Empyrean App, the weirdly pompous program had a new notification.
