Chapter 4: Hyper Cognition

[Yang's P.o.v.]

Yang was a strong fighter. She was trained by her father, a retired huntsman. Arguably one of the stronger ones out there.

His martial prowess was truly something to behold. Yang had admired his abilities and decided that she would follow up on his path.

And so she did. She became a hunter in training who fought using her body as weapon rather than using conventional weapons such as a blade or even a mace.

However she had soon realized that her body wasn't enough. Thus came into creation, Ember Celica, her prized weapon which looked like gauntlets. It had the ability to mecha shift to hold dust canisters to eject onto opponents.

Essentially, it was also a gun.

Now, although Yang hadn't particularly studied on how to wield a weapon such as a sword or a shield, she had fought many opponents.

Some were prospective hunters and other... weren't. She had... so to speak, developed an intuition to realize if a person had even a modicum of skill regarding the blade.

Which was why she was so especially confused about Jaune Arc's fighting style. It wasn't bad per say... but it was clear that he was a beginner in terms of combat.

His form though not particularly sloppy, was very textbook in nature and easy to see through. He had multiple openings that screamed out for her to take advantage of.

And take advantage she did.

Unfortunately...

Jaune seemed as if he couldn't even keep up with her speed, which screamed to her all sorts of wrong because she wasn't even going at her full prowess. Barely... 60%.

It brought some suspicions to her mind. How does a person this bad at practical combat get accepted into an academy like beacon. Was it perhaps his academic prowess that outshone his combat abilities?

Perhaps he had a tactical mind and chose to fight using his brain instead of a straight on fight? If that was the case then it made sense that he was made the leader of his team.

Yang inwardly shrugged before discarding the unnecessary thoughts on her mind. She had to put her focus in the battle before her or things wouldn't go in her favor.

If Jaune truly was a strategical/tactical leader instead of having strength in head on fights then she would do best not to underestimate him.

Though, she couldn't help but ask...

"Jaune why aren't you fighting back? You're only blocking my attacks which is slowly lowering your aura value. It's kinda boring to win like this..." Yang finished off, slightly disappointed.

Yang took a glance at his reaction and was curious to see he looked slightly embarrassed.

Before she could ask him anything more, he answered.

"I... erm, I'm training myself to be able to block any and all attacks with absolute efficiency before properly attacking."

He was?

Well, that was actually a pretty good idea. This was meant to be a training exercise as well, wasn't it? If that was the case then she should train herself to be able to bypass defenses with perfect efficiency as well.

Yang felt a slight amount of adrenaline pump within her veins. If this was training then she should learn as much as she could within the time frame...

After all, Jaune wasn't likely to be her opponent the next time.

Though, Jaune's fighting prowess still seemed slightly suspicious.

"You are? But you look like you're about to keel over." Yang frowned, tilting her head in curiousity.

"Its-its a work in progress?"

"Sure... well if that's the case, I might as well learn how to break past defenses more easily. Thanks for this, its gonna help me out a little." Yang decided to worry about Jaune's abilities some other time.

After all, if he was accepted to Beacon, he had to have reached a standard where he could at least put up a bit of battle to her.

"Here I come!" Yang shouted, propelling herself at full speed.

Seeing Jaune lift his shield in defense, she used the momentum of her propulsion to spin behind him, executing a powerful punch towards his surprised face.

However in the next moment, everything changed.

Whoosh!

The force from her fist ruffled the hair on the left side of his face. In that moment where Yang was sure of her attack landing, Jaune had dodged.

It was at the last possible second. It seemed like it was almost pure luck but Yang never believed in such things during a fight.

Luck was simply a part of one's skillset.

Yang's punch left her open to Jaune's attack but he never took it, instead opting to jump backwards in slight fright and... was that an expression of shock?

Yang however gave it no mind and jumped forwards to deliver another attack, spinning her body in the process.

Unfortunately for her, a shield was in the way of her attack. It deflected her punch downwards and sent her stumbling forwards.

Yang recovered quickly however, and flipped onto her hand to deliver a spinning back-kick onto Jaune.

However once again, his shield came forwards and deflected her kick upwards, forcing her to right herself or risk falling onto her face.

Yang rolled backwards and stood from the ground. Her form was clutched tight, observing every move that Jaune seemed to make.

Unfortunately though, whatever form of fighting stance that he appeared to have been using earlier had dissolved completely.

His expression was that of shock and slight bewilderment.

Yang gave it little thought and chose to propel herself forwards to meet him in battle once more. This time however... she noticed something odd.

As she sent her leg forwards to kick at his center mass, Jaune seemed to have moved before she had even properly raised her leg.

Almost as if he was preparing to deflect that particular move of hers before she had even sent it forwards.

And true enough, her attack was deflected once again. Expecting it this time, she used the momentum of the deflection to spin her other leg towards his face.

However, just like before Jaune had already ducked down, seemingly avoiding her kick before she had even thrown it forwards.

What... how was he doing that?!

He was predicting her attacks?!
