Chapter 19: Chapter 18
Xiulan could hear his words echo in her mind. She was tearing up. She thought that she was a strong person. Oh how rude of a reality check she had been given. She placed the takeout on the dining table and walked to the living room. She curled herself into a ball and cried hard. She was still crying when she heard the doorbell ring again. She wiped her tears and checked who it was on the display of the flat screen. She was slightly surprised to see that it was Lan Zhuo. She wiped her face with a wet tissue and opened the door.
Lan Zhuo took a look at her face and realized that she was crying. He didn't know what to say. He had never consoled anyone or even attempted at doing it. He didn't even know why he came back in the first place. He pushed his inner turmoil to the back of his mind and said "You still haven't eaten dinner yeah? I had a feeling that the dinner might remain untouched and seems like I was right."
Xiulan sniffed slightly and let him come inside. She looked as he took out the food from the bags, put them in containers and placed them in the oven in practiced movements. She kept mum as she continued to take in the scene before her in daze. She was still thinking about the words he said a while back. She was startled when she noticed a few dishes in front of her, on the table.
Lan Zhuo took two sets of cutlery. he placed one in front of Xiulan and the other in front of himself. When he noticed her staring at him with a dazed look, he said "What are you waiting for? the dishes to cool down for a second time?" Xiulan just muttered something and started eating silently. No one initiated any kind of conversation. After they finished eating, when Zhuo started to take the dishes from the table, Xiulan stopped him saying that she would do it. She requested him to stay until she finished the dishes as she had something to say to him.
Lan Zhuo went to the living room and sat down. He took out his phone and started going through the mails that were sorted out by Zhao Yufeng. After some time, he heard the sound of footsteps approaching the living room. He looked up only to see Xiulan walking towards the sofa with hesitant steps. It was clear from her body language that she really wanted to chicken out from whatever she wanted to say. Lan Zhuo continued to watch her struggle to come to a decision with interest. He realised that she was a pretty simple person who didn't really have much experience with things. He deduced that she lived a pretty ordinary and a peaceful life, without many incidents.
It seemed that the woman sitting on the far end of the sofa had finally made up her mind. Lan Zhuo kept a straight face while continuing to observe her.
Xiulan felt that she was really stupid. She didn't know why she even asked him to stay here in the first place and listen to whatever she had to say. He was not even a person who was close to her. She subconsciously opened up to this person despite being uncomfortable with strangers. She sighed and thought of ways to politely let him retire for the day but she was feeling conflicted. She needed some to talk to. In the end, she went to the living room and sat at the far end of the sofa. She hesitated for a bit more and finally decided to talk. She took a deep breath and looked at him.
