Chapter 18: Chapter 17
She opened the door with sweaty palms and immediately swung the laddle with full force while closing her eyes.
Lan Zhuo who was standing by the door was taken by total surprise at her actions. He immediately held her hands to stop her from completing the swing action and said "Calm down, it's me." Xiulsn snapped her eyes open only to see Lan Zhuo and Zhao Yufeng who was panting heavily. She realized what she was about to do and immediately pulled her hands from his grasp. She attempted to hide the laddle behind her back. She sheepishly said "Ah B..Boss, assistant Zhao, I am so sorry. I honestly thought it was an attempted break in. I am very sorry. Please forgive me."
Lan Zhuo eyed her with a hint of amusement in his eyes. He was reminded of the expression where her face was all scrunched up and was trying to exert force to hit the person in front of her and let out a faint smile. He then leisurely pointed at the camera installed near the door and said "Did you forget about the security detail that was mentioned to you just yesterday?"
Xiulan blushed in shame. She felt more embarrassed when she heard soft snickers which Zhao Yufeng was desperately trying to control. She then looked helplessly at Lan Zhuo with her flushed face and said "I am so sorry Mr. Lan, I.. this is the first time experiencing anything like this in the 25 years of my life. I honestly tried not to think about it but in the end I still felt panicked. I don't know what to do. I am even scared to go out now." She clenched the laddle tightly and bit into her lips when she realised how much of a coward she really was. But she really could not help but feel something would happen to her or her near and dear ones.
Lan Zhuo sighed. He then looked at her and said in a low voice "Its not wrong to feel scared or feel panicked. I know that this is the first time you have experienced something like this but you have to ask yourself whether you will let this single event overwhelm you or you are going to treat this as a stepping stone to handle your emotions better. I should remind you that being my assistant is not an easy job. If you're this easily disgruntled, think hard before applying for the job. You still have time till this Sunday to make up your mind and I can't guarantee that things like this may never happen again. This is just a break in. How will you react when there is a murder in cold blood? Think long and hard Zhang Xiulan and give me an answer. For now, we just came here to give you some food and tell you that if you need anything, anything at all, you can contact either me or Zhao Yufeng. That's all for now. We shall take our leave then."
Lan Zhuo handed her share of the takeout he ordered to her dazed self and turned around. He pulled Zhao Yufeng unceremoniously towards the elevator.
Xiulan could hear his words echo in her mind. She was tearing up. She thought that she was a strong person. Oh how rude of a reality check she had been given. She placed the takeout on the dining table and walked to the living room. She curled herself into a ball and cried hard. She was still crying when she heard the doorbell ring again. She wiped her tears and checked who it was on the display of the flat screen. She was slightly surprised to see that it was Lan Zhuo. She wiped her face with a wet tissue and opened the door.
