Chapter 9: Chapter 8
Standing by the door was a lady in a hospital gown. She had a pair of eyes which was very distinctive. It was black with a noticeable hint of blue. She was thin and frail looking. She had an aura of a defeated spirit. Looking at her, Xiulan suddenly felt a sharp tug at her heart. She continued looking at the woman with a confused look in her eyes. She honestly didn't understand why she felt so strongly for the middle aged couple in front of her.
Lan Yi looked at his wife with a soft and helpless gaze. He said "Fei'er, I told you to take rest just before coming out didn't I?". The woman looked at her husband and said " I heard voices so I came to take a look...." then turned towards Xiulan. She looked at her for a few moments and gently said "You must be the young lady who my husband helped yesterday. How do you feel now dear? Do you have people you know here in city S? If not why don't you stay with us for the time being?" and smiled. Her words made Xiulan get an almost irresistible urge to go hug her tightly but she reigned it in. She smiled at the woman and said, "No worries ma'am, I have a friend who stays in this city... but that's okay. The doctor's said I am pretty much okay but I would have to remain here for about 3 to 4 days more because he wanted to observe my condition and if everything is okay, I would be able to get discharged." Shen Fei smiled and said "That is great my dear. I am happy that your condition is not serious. Stay safe and healthy my dear...".
As Shen Fei was turning around, Xiulan suddenly said "Ma'am, is it okay if I can come and talk to you for sometime every day untill I get discharged? If not then it's okay it's just uh never mind me.... I am sorry if I disturbed you... I.. will see you around Ma'am. I wish you a speedy recovery as well" and blushed. She bowed, bent her head and turned to walk away when she heard "wait!".
Xiulan turned around and saw the woman walking towards her in slow steps. She held Xiulan's hand and said softly "I don't mind having you coming over here.... you don't have to be embarrassed about this. What's your name my dear?" Xiulan felt a tightness in her chest. She (Xiulan) gripped her (Shen Fei) hand lightly, smiled and said "My name is Zhang Xiulan ma'am. What do I address you as?" Shen Fei replied softly "My name is Shen Fei. You can just call me Aunt Fei. He is my husband, you have already met him, so just call him Uncle Yi, alright Xiao Lan?" Xiulan was in all smiles when she heard that. She said "Alright! I won't stand in ceremony then. Aunt Fei, Uncle Yi."
Xiulan faced her Aunt Fei and said "Aunt, we have been standing in the corridor for some time now. Let's get you back to the ward okay? If I am not wrong, Uncle must have been about to go out somewhere before I interrupted right?" She turned towards Lan Yi and said "Uncle, I will stay with aunt so you can rest assured and go wherever you have to. Be safe uncle and come back soon" and smiled.
Lan Yi was amused looking at her antics. He chuckled softly and said "Sure Xiao Lan. Uncle will just go downstairs to the hospital's pharmacy to replenish the medication your aunt has to take. He will have a safe trip and will be back soon." Hearing this Xiulan blushed furiously. She made an oopsies face, turned to Shen Fei and said "Let's go Aunt, Uncle will be back soon!" and gently pushed her towards the ward. Shen Fei was also chuckling as she let Xiulan push her into the ward.
