Chapter 5: To die for

My clothes were stained with blood and mud from the hours in the forest and I was probably stinking from all the sweat but I followed the entourage to Ari's room. Mathews drew his blood and left soon. All the bodyguards following Miraj and me had stopped outside the room so that left only the three of us now. I figured there wouldn't be a better time for explanation since Ari was still out.

I looked at Miraj and saw him looking at Ari with worry. As Ari grew bigger, I could tell he was starting to look more like his father. Other than my hair and chin, there wasn't much of me in him. Miraj didn't have a pretty face but he was handsome. He had a square jaw, rough bearded skin and green eyes. He had a six-foot-three tall frame with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. He wasn't to die for but he was better looking than an average man. But if you counted the money in his account and power behind his name, most girls would think he was to die for. I liked to believe I wasn't most girls.

Lost in appreciating my husband's looks, I had forgotten about the explanation. It had been a month since we had slept together. This distraction was warranted. He still remembered though, so he asked, "What happened?"

"We were playing hide and seek in the park."

He turned around and looked at me. The look in his eyes said: 'What were you thinking?'

"He was the one playing with the other kids in the park and I was keeping an eye on him. He was hiding behind a lamp post-terrible place to hide, by the way- and he was in my line of sight. The only thing I was suspicious about, in that place, was his IQ."

My husband said a lot with his expressions. Right now his face told me he wasn't enjoying my lame attempt at humor. I considered it his loss and continued, "Like I said, there was no one around who looked suspicious. I was sitting on the park bench, watching the kids play when this giant man entered the park. I was watching him as he made his way to the kids and I became alert. He looked like the kind of man who would be a guard- like Luke, you know, tall and muscular- but he was in casual clothes." His brows twitched at that. Luke was his right-hand man and best friend with whom I had a casual flirting relationship. Miraj hated it and that's what made it fun for me and Luke. Ignoring his expression, I continued, "He seemed trained with the way he walked so I was still alert. He snatched someone's purse from the opposite side of the park and started running towards me. I got up from the bench and thought I would stop him because it wasn't good to steal-" I shrugged as I said that part.

He interrupted me, "You train mercenaries for a living. Teaching people to kill is your livelihood. And your moral compass flickers at purse snatching? Really, Bee?"

Bee. He only called me Bee when we were alone. In bed. Never out of bed. But I guess having ones son and wife missing for over six hours loosens ones inhibitions. He himself seemed surprised that he had called me Bee.

My name was Eliana de la Cruz. My family called me Ana or Eli depending on their preference. Miraj called me Bee because apparently I couldn't stop buzzing when we first met. I have no idea what he meant by that explanation but I wasn't gonna ask him again when we were in bed and could be doing better things. I am still curious about it but I don't want to kill my cat. The figurative one obviously.

CREATORS' THOUGHTS
SniperGirl SniperGirl

Eliana was trained to be a killer who could put aside emotions so they won't hinder her work. You can see her emotional switch turning back on in these next few chapters as she gets out of the dull and focused mentality of a fighter when attacked.
