Chapter 20: First of many

We sat there for quite some time, talking about anything and everything. Even when there are times that we sat there in silence, it doesn't feel awkward or uncomfortable, instead we appreciate each others company.

It just feels right, it's like, I'm where I am suppose to be. Just like I belong here, with him? I'm not sure.. Or is it just this day and the entrancing scenery? I wonder.

It is not often you get to see a sunset beach. That was my privilege today, as we gaze out the acetylene blue sea, and the waves are crawling gently to the shore, drenching it. There were cylinders of light that moved across the sea as the sun starts to set. The humming of the waves symphony, charms and calms my senses. The serenity of the moment was disturbed by the raucous cry of a seagull, which brought me back to reality. Then it hit me, I wish this day with Ash would never end.

"I think we better head back, Skye and hers must be wondering where I am." I said, regretful that it is time to go.

Ash turned to me with a meaningful look. For a moment he just sat there with his expressive eyes glinting in the sun.

"Would you like to go to the movies and have dinner with me?" he asked.

He seemed to, maybe feel the same way I do, as if he doesn't want this day to end as well. Is this what wishful thinking feels like?

"I would love to but, maybe Skye and hers have plans for tonight. Can I take a rain check, please?" I replied.

Ash gave me a genuinely optimistic smile which makes me think that he really does want to spend more time with me.

"Of course. What about friday night? I finish at the beach around 3pm. Maybe meet me there? I'll introduce you to the boys and if you like to bring Skye, it's up to you." Ash generously offered with a smile.

"Sure, I will let you know." I said, smiling shyly back.

We started packing up the picnic blanket the tuck it in Ash's back pack. Ash held out his hands, I took it and start our walk back the way we came from.

It's a beautiful walk. The way the sun sets over the horizon, the rich explosions of color. Rich romantic hues of red that blended with crimsons, oranges, pinks and purples. The way it looked over the horizon stretching out with dynamic tones to everyone below.

It reminds me of a great big painting in our school library hallway. I remember thinking that the artist must have a great imagination to paint such beauty. I never thought that I would experience this in the real world. I have never seen such a beautiful sight. Now I know that it is real.

As we we're walking back hand in hand, we met one of Ash's friends.

"Hey Ash!" Ash's friend hollered.

"Hey, Shaun! Fancy meeting you here, mate! This is Wynter, my friend." Ash introduced me to Shaun. The way he said "my friend" sounded like its emphasized. Shaun smiled and offered his hand in friendship.

As I let go of Ash's hand and took Shaun's hand, I noticed that Shaun was looking at our clasped hand.

"Hi Wynter, very nice to finally meet you, our friend here couldn't stop talking about you since he came back, now I see why." he grinned at me like he's got a secret and he's never going to tell.

"Hi Shaun! Nice to meet one of Ash's friend. I hope they're good things?" is all I could say.

We exchanged polite conversations then he spoke to Ash about what happened in the beach that afternoon.

Shaun is as tall as Ash and quite a looker but compared to Ash, as they were talking side by side, I would say that he's got nothing on Ash. Ash stood up tall and got a very striking pose, one hand in his right pocket and leaning on his right foot. His dimples peeking as he speaks. Then he was gesturing to Shaun where we've been.

After a few more minutes, they said their goodbyes and Shaun went on his merry way. Then Ash took my hand again and we were walking back to Hazel and David's house.

When we got to the front door, Ash smiled at me. He gave me his smile that warms your heart, like the sun warms your skin. He stood in front of me, still holding my hands. I'm not sure what he expects from me, but I wouldn't put out on the first date. H, I wouldn't put out on this holiday. Nothing good will come out of it, only heart break if I let it.

"So..." he started, "You go in now" then let go of my hand reluctantly.

"Ash.. thank you very much for this beautiful day, I will always remember it." I said with a grateful smile.

"Me too, Wynter, you got no idea! Please tell me you'll come out with me on friday!" he begged, with worry in his eyes.

Before I can answer, the front door opened and Skye stood there like a protective parent. I almost burst out laughing but held it.

"Hello Skye, I just dropped off Wynter, I was just asking her if she would like to come out friday afternoon to the movies and dinner. I'm also extending my invitation to you." Ash explained.

Skye turned from a strict authoritatian parent to a blushing, bumbling fool.

"Oh... ah... eh... you... yeah... friday... me... her... dinner... sure... movies... afternoon... yeah... ok..." she stuttered.

I couldn't hold it in anymore, I let out a guffaw! Skye is just a character! Ash, beside me laughed too, then all three of us are laughing like old friends.
