Chapter 19: Bondi beach

We sat there for a while, Ash ordered some strawberry flavoured milk shake for me and chocolate for him. I was so enchanted with the beach view from this restaurant.

Now I realise what's up with people talking about Bondi. It is well known for it's great sandy beach, as well as it's surf. It is a modern and trendy coastal resort, which is very popular, as we can see today. There are plenty of people everywhere, eventhough it's only spring. There are some surfers braving the cold ocean water!

"It's so beautiful!" I exclaimed, watching as the blue waves lapped gently against the shore.

"Yes, very beautiful" Ash sighed.

I look at him, as his voice is different, it sounded huskier than his normal voice.

He wasn't looking at the waves, instead he is gazing directly at me with a meaningful look.

I couldn't say anything but just look back at him. I am tongue tied. He must have taken off his eyeglasses when I was busy watching the waves. His bright blue eyes were glinting in the afternoon sun but are red underneath, whether from the constant irritation of salt water from his life guard duties or from sleepless nights, I'm not sure. He sits leaning forward and facing his whole body towards me.

"I.. I.. I.." I stuttered, not sure what I wanted to say, but this was also accompanied by my heart racing and being fidgety. Now my thoughts are running wild with questions like, why do I stutter around this guy or get all fidgety, and just don't seem to act like my old self. I'm normally confident even when talking to very attractive guys in high school, but this is definitely different.

"I want to show you something," he put his glasses back on and the spell is gone.

Ash stood up from his chair and waved to the waitress for our bill. I quickly grabbed my wallet from my backpack and got some money. Ash saw what I was doing and quickly warned me.

"Wynter, keep your money, I didn't asked you out just to let you pay for your own. I'm not that kind of guy."

I look at him determined and said "Ash, just because you asked me out doesn't mean I'm going to be a free loader."

"Fine, you win," he said defeated, "we'll split the bill today. I don't see you as a free loader, Wynter. But next time you go out with me, please remember that I would like to treat you out, not just to foot the bill because I'm chauvinistic, but as your friend.. maybe more.." he said this with an amused voice.

Then he look deeply into my eyes like he's going to say more but stopped himself. He took the money I gave him and paid half. He gave back my change. I put it safely on my wallet and stood up.

Suddenly he was next to me and he held out his hand, I look at it surprised and then I felt confused. Then it dawned on me that he is asking me to hold his hands.

This Adonis wants me to hold his hands! My heart is racing like I had couple of laps running, and if I die right here, right now, I think I will be the happiest woman in the world!

I hold out my hand to his and when our skin touch, I'm quite sure that we sparked electricity. He gave me a radiant smile after I held his hands. He seemed very pleased that I want to hold hands with him too.

He led me down the path towards the beach and we walked to the south headlands.

Quietly looking at each other, every couple of seconds, smiling at each other like fools and swaying our clasped hands like silly.

I can only hear the sound of the rolling waves like all the other sounds were muted, even though the beach is packed with people. It feels like we're the only ones in this part of the beach.

It was quite a long, fabulous coastal walk which takes us past a number of smaller coves.

I never thought that I would feel this kind of feeling thingy. I don't know what to call this feelings but it's not unpleasant. Actually thinking about it, its feels very nice.

My thoughts were once again interrupted, when Ash declared that we have arrived at the place.

"This is Coogee." I heard him say.

After the long walk, this is well worth it. I look around and the views are fantastic. Although the walk is a little strenuous in parts, it is also relaxing and very enjoyable. Especially when you're walking with someone you like and I guess Ash's likeability went up another notch.

"What do you think?" he asked watching my facial expression.

I suppose my face says it all. "Wow, just wow!" lost for words.

He gave me his radiant smile, open up his backpack and pulled out a small picnic blanket, he lay it down the ground and sat down.

Once again holding out his hands, inviting me to sit down. I sat down next to him and he put his arms around my shoulders and just admired the beautiful scenery before us.

He looked inside his bag. "Would you like a masba?" he asked.

Did I hear it right? masba? What the h is a masba? I look at him confused then he handed me, a small thing with black packaging and red writing on it, that says "Mars".

I smiled, recognising now what I heard. It's Mars bar. Australians and their silent R's.
