Chapter 16: Reassurance
That night, I asked Skye, if we're doing anything for the next day, she said that her Dad and Hazel is taking us out. I asked her if it's alright if I go out with Ash. Her eyes light up.
"He did get up his arse and asked you this time, didn't he?" she asked as she combs her hair in front of the vanity mirror.
"He did, he is nice isn't he?" I agreed.
"Hey, you can do what you want and go where you want, just let me know when and where you are, who you're with and what you're doing!" she stated sternly. "remember I promise your Nan, I'd look after you.. I don't want to be a bearer of bad news." she warned me.
" Yes, Mom, I promise!" putting my hand on my heart.
"I'm far from your mom," she disagreed, "but seriously, you need to let me know, ok. And I will let you know where I am."
After we agreed, couple of minutes pass in silence as we busy ourselves doing whatever. My phone rang and when I look at it, Ash is calling me!
"Hello?" I said.
"Hi Wynter, this is Ash! How are you?"
"Oh, Hi Ash! I'm good and you?"
Skye was doing a sign language to me, asking who is it, and I just nodded and turned away so I can hear and concentrate on what Ash was saying.
"Yeah, I'm good but a bit tired, normally its quiet at the beach but there was a guy who went swimming too far this arvo, and he had a bad cramp, the poor fella! We rescued him and he was ok after that, he got a massive bruise on his ego, but he'll live." he recalled.
"Uh, Ash? What's arvo?" I inquire.
"Afternoon, sweetie. You keep me company and I'll tell you most of the Aussie slang." I can hear the amusement in his voice, "talking of company, would you come out with me tomorrow?" he queried.
"Yeah, I'll go with you, but you have to tell me where we're going, what time we're going and what time you're dropping me off." I blurted out before I can think of what I was saying, then he burst into fits of laughter, then declared, "you're a breath of fresh air, Wynter!"
I'm so lucky he can't see me because my face turned red beet in embarrassment. Skye, who is comfortable seating in her single bed, burst out laughing too. I look at her with murder in my eyes and made a sign to cut it out.
"I.." I uttered on the phone, I'm not sure what to say after that and was saved when Ash started talking instead.
"I'll pick you up around 11 tomorrow, we can have lunch at Bondi Trattoria, its got italian food but an Australian owned restaurant, food there is great, its got good views of the beach, then we can walk on the beach, show you around, go for a dip if you wish, I will make sure you don't go too far swimming, then we can head home for a change of clothes after that.. then have dinner, if you like to go to Brown Sugar, its a great Mediterranean bistro in Bondi, maybe around 6, drop off around 9?" He lined up our whole day like an itinerary and it's my turn to laugh.
"Geez you're very thorough! But thank you for letting me know, I don't want Skye, her family and my family to worry." I giggled.
"No worries, I'll do the right thing by you!" Ash assured me, "Ok I better let you get some sleep, it's getting late, I will look forward to tomorrow."
"Ok Ash, see you tomorrow." then ended the call.
I was smiling as I recalled our conversation when I heard a whoop.
"Wooo hooo! My girl's going out on a date! I'm so glad for you! I haven't got the chance to ask Aunt Hazel about Ash, I haven't forgotten about my mission, mind you, but I'll probably open it up tomorrow when you're not here. Otherwise its going to be awkward when you're here."
"Thanks Skye, am I really going on a date?" I asked innocently.
"Yes, you are and you need your beauty sleep so hop up on the bed and get horizontal! Come on now, quickly!" she encouraged. "Did you bring your swimmers? I heard you're going to the beach, bring it just in case."
After talking for another half an hour, she turned the lamp off. All I can hear is silence then I drifted off to sleep.
