Chapter 61: A Careless Worker Slipped And Fell
Auntie Mehra sat down in the chair outside of her son's ICU room. She was very sober, she had not eaten anything ever since she came to the hospital with Uncle Mehra. Her eyes were very red and she had eye bags gotten from crying and sleeplessness.
The surgery lasted from the evening of the previous day and throughout the entire night. It was now 6:30am the following day. According to the doctor, It would take a couple of more hours before her son wakes up and her husband had just passed away.
She had no idea how she was going to live without him, her whole life revolves around her husband and now he is no more. She started crying again just thinking about her loss.
Some nurses and some of the relatives of other patients tried their best to console her but their efforts failed, she continued to grieve and after a while they all got tired. The nurses went back to the nurses station and the relatives of other patients minded their own business while waiting outside.
Her cries were not loud, her tears just flowed uncontrollably while she wept softly. Security did not ask her to leave because she was not disturbing the peace of other patients in the hospital.
She cried for more than an hour non stop. She had not eaten, her body was very weak. She was so weak that she did not know when she fell asleep. The relatives of other patients who were sitting with her in the long bench outside of the hospital ward were considerate.
As soon as they saw that she had fallen asleep, they stood up and allowed her use the whole bench as a bed so that she would be comfortable. The nurses too were very kind, they helped her put away her belongings in a safe place as well as that of Uncle Mehras.
The only thing she was holding in her hand as she slept was a small purse that contained some money, credit cards and the phones of both her and her husband, uncle Mehra.
Meanwhile back in India in Delhi....
Purhab entered his room, he was exhausted, the entire day in the office and in the field was filled with work, from one to another, but what made Purhab come back so late in the evening was because there was an emergency at one of the sites.
Mehra Conglomerates is a major construction company, earlier in the day, a careless worker slipped and fell from high up 6 stories in the building site. After falling from such a height, he died immediately.
After it happened, the engineer that is responsible for the site contacted President Mehra. Purhab Mehra along side with Yuvrag went down to the site immediately after hearing the news of the demise of the worker.
On their way to the site, President Mehra instructed Yuvrag to call back the engineer responsible for the site and tell him to call the inspector of police, detective Rishi Gupta. Yuvrag called him and informed him. I will do that right away, the engineer responded.
On getting to the site, detective Rishi Gupta and his men were already on ground. The engineer had instructed the other site workers to cease work in other to allow the police conduct their investigation.
President Mehra and Yuvrag came out of the car and headed in the direction of the engineer and detective Rishi Gupta. Namaste President Mehra, detective Rishi Gupta and the engineer greeted.
Detective Rishi Gupta stretched forth his hand for a handshake. Namaste detective, engineer; President Mehra responded and returned the hand shake to detective Rishi Gupta. He also shook the engineer after that.
As soon as President Mehra shook hands with both the detective and the engineer, Yuvrag then greeted, namaste detective, engineer. Namaste Yuvrag, they both responded.
Inspector Rishi Gupta faced President Mehra and spoke deeply, my men are already on ground, we would get to the root cause of the accident, the investigation is on going.
President Mehra, the engineer spoke up immediately after detective Rishi. Sir, I already instructed that all work on site be ceased for now until the investigations are completed.
He paused and continued, sir I am deeply sorry about this unfortunate accident, after the investigations are completed, I would organise the reorientation of all workers on site to prevent future hazards like this on site.
President Mehra looked at both the engineer and the detective briefly then replied, detective please do get to the bottom of this, and as soon as you do, please do inform me. I will President, and please do excuse me, I need to join my men, the detective replied and left their presence.
President Mehra shook his head and acknowledged the detective's departure. After doing that, he turned to the engineer and said. Please do ensure that that the workers are reorientated. I will President, the engineer responded.
About the worker who died, please give the details about his family to Yuvrag. Yuvrag? President Mehra called out. Yes President? Yuvrag responded. Make arrangements to inform his family members about his demise and provide them with all the necessary compensation, President Mehra continued.
Ok I will do that President, as soon as I get all information about him from the engineer, Yuvrag replied. Yuvrag come with me to my office, but first of all you must put on a hard hat for safety precautions, the engineer spoke.
Ok engineer, Yuvrag replied. Yuvrag then took a hard hat that was offered to him by one of the workers. He wore the hard hat and followed the engineer to his office immediately.
President Mehra also wore a hard hat and went towards the detective. He didn't speak to him much, he allowed him carry out his investigation. After the president stood for a while, one of the workers offered him a chair which he refused because he preferred to stand.
The detective after a while tried to persuade him to go to the engineer's office on site to go have a rest, he declined aswell. One of his workers had died in his site, he wanted to be present when investigations are still going on.
After Yuvrag got the necessary information about the worker, he came back to where President Mehra was and informed him that he would be leaving to inform the worker's family and compensate them for their loss.
Not too long after Yuvrag left, the media from other TV stations got wind of the accident that happened on site, one of the workers had leaked it out for a huge sum of money.
Initially President Mehra had planned to inform the public of the accident and how attempts had been made to reach the worker's family and that they were compensated duely. He was going to use Mehra TV and it's PR services.
He had no time to prepare, but as soon as the media came swamping to the site, he took up the responsibility, accepted the medias' live interview and announced to the public that investigations are being carried out about what exactly had happened at the site.
He also mentioned that the affected worker's family is being contacted and that Mehra Conglomerates is doing everything possible to compensate them.
The staffs of Mehra TV was also on ground, they were there earlier before the other media houses came swamping in. President Mehra had informed them, that they should be on the site. He did that in his office as soon as he got the information from the engineer about the incident.
Some of the other media houses tried to give Mehra Conglomerates bad publicity, they had been bribed by some smaller companies who wanted to take advantage to boost their stocks.
Mehra TV had the best PR team, they were able to turn the story around in the favour of Mehra Conglomerates and expose the shady deals of the other smaller companies who tried to take advantage of the situation.
Yuvrag located the address of the worker who lost his life, after he broke the news to them, the whole family went into mourning. Yuvrag apologised to them for their loss and offered them compensation.
The greedy uncle of the worker demanded more money. Yuvrag then called President Mehra who was live at that time. It was a perfect opportunity to show to the public that Mehra Conglomerates cares and are are trying to reach out to the family of the worker.
Yuvrag spoke to President Mehra, he was put on loud speaker, the public could hear everything. Yuvrag informed him about the family of the worker demands. Because they were on live television, President Mehra agreed and even added more to compensate the family of the worker.
The compensation that Yuvrag had initially offered the worker's family about, was that of the company's policy which was broken to prevent bad publicity for Mehra Conglomerates.
With clear evidence of the effort of Mehra Conglomerates to do the needful, the public were convinced, they did not believe the lies of some Media houses who took bribe from the smaller companies.
They had lied that Mehra Conglomerates does not take the life of their workers on site seriously, that they are only concerned in making profits at all cost.
After President Mehra ended his live interview, detective Rishi Gupta was also interviewed by the media. He explained that investigations are on going that he would keep the public informed when the investigations are over.
The engineer of the site was also interviewed as well as some of the workers who acknowledged that the management of Mehra Conglomerates had always treated them well.
After the interview, the bodyguards protected President Mehra as he went to his car, the driver took him back to his office. After investigations were over, detective Rishi Gupta called him.and informed him.
After the close of day at the office, he went to the police station with Yuvrag for formalities. To close the case file of the worker who had died in his site. He went to the worker's family afterwards. As the CEO of Mehra Conglomerates, he went to personally give his condolences.
The engineer and the other workers had also gone there to console the family of their colleagues earlier. With the help of President Mehra, the worker's family were not disturbed by the media.
Presently at the Mehra mansion, the exhausted President Mehra had just finished taking his hot bath. He was so exhausted that Lakshmi had to send for the maid to bring his food upstairs to his room.
Lakshmi did watch the news, she had an idea about the incident at the site. She allowed her husband, Purhab Mehra to finish eating his Meal. When he was done, she sent for the maid to come take the dishes away downstairs to the kitchen.
After the maid had left, she started given Purhab her husband a massage. She massaged him for a long time, when he became better, she then asked him the latest development of the accident that occurred in the site.
She explained to him that she had watched the breaking news earlier in the day, so she had an idea about it. Purhab exhaled before he replied her. He asked her to sit down first.
When she was sitted, he then explained to her how things were handled. He also told her that the investigations that was carried out showed that all equipment on the site are in perfect condition.
The worker that had died, was careless, when he was at such a height, he did not secure himself properly with the safety kits that the company provides for all its workers on site.
