Chapter 8: The Moon's Light

Pain. Stabbing pain. Blades punctured her everywhere. She was screaming, drowning in pain. She woke with a start, gasping. She sat up in the dark. A strong desire flooded her heart. She climbed out of the hospital wing bed. It felt as though a fish hook had been driven into her heart and something far away was reeling her steadily home. She stood, walked toward the door, and exited in silence. The hallways were dark, thick clouds covering the moon's full light. She stepped out into the grounds and began making her way toward the lake's shimmering surface. Her limbs were trembling, vibrating with the effort of keeping herself on her feet. She approached the edge of the water, staring into its depths. Without thinking she waded into the water, wanting nothing but to be surrounded by it, to feel its embrace, the safety it provided. She let herself sink into the water and a rush of calm overwhelmed her. Her breathing slowed, the water flowing through her lungs as though it was designed to do so all along. Suddenly every muscle in her body began to seize up, causing her to gasp with the pain. Her fingers flexed as her skin began to bubble and boil as though worms wriggled beneath her flesh. As suddenly as it had started everything stopped. Her breathing eased. She opened her eyes. Her back was buried in the mushy clay of the lake's floor, the murky water swirled above her as a fish flashed past. She sat up and went to brush her hair away from her face. She froze as she looked at her hands. They seemed different, they were not pruning even though she had been underwater for several minutes and they were almost pearlescent, shimmering. She went to stand but she felt different. She looked down at her legs, but they were gone. Replaced by a long blue-grey tail, with the same shimmering quality of her skin. The tail ended in a powerful fin, it was wide and much more firm than any Disney movie had every depicted. She tried swimming but it felt as though she weighed at least ten more pounds than she had before. Eventually, with some trial and error, she managed to swim back to the surface. As her head broke the water the moon emerged from behind its cluster of clouds, the moonlight alighted upon her skin she seemed more beautiful and yet more terrible than normal, with shimmering skin and long golden hair. A strange swooping sensation danced through her stomach, sending goosebumps up her arms. Her entire mindset changed suddenly, focusing solely on one desire: to lure men to their deaths.

She woke up refreshed. Breathing in deeply she stretched and sat up. Albus' head jerked up from the foot of her bed.

"Hey, how are you feeling?"

"I feel great." She said smiling.

"Oh good. You gave me a really big scare there."

"So did I miss any school work?"

"Ugh, you Ravenclaws and your homework."

"Ugh, you Gryffindors and your lack of responsibility."

"Have you seen madam Pomphrey?" Quinn asked glancing around.

"Not yet. It's still pretty early in the morning."

"Why are you here if it's so early?"

"Quidditch practice was early this morning and it got cut short."

"Ah." Said Quinn as Madam Pomphrey bustled out of her office.

"Now dear, how are we feeling this morning?"

"Better. I must have slept off whatever I had."

"Well, you get dressed in the bathroom then be on your way."

Quinn climbed out of her bed and, taking a bundle of robes from Madam Pomphrey, went into the bathroom to change.

"What are you doing here so early Potter?" Madam Pomphrey said as she stripped Quinn's bed of its sheets.

"I was at an early quidditch practice."

"Really? Because I happen to know that Hufflepuff had the field this morning. Unless you decided to switch houses I highly doubt that you were anywhere near the quidditch field at any point today."

"I was worried about her, okay?"

"No, not okay. She deserves the truth. Besides it's not altogether that uncommon for a boy to be worried about his girlfriend."

"Quinn is not my girlfriend."

"Ah, I see." Said Madam Pomphrey in understanding.

"Oh no, it's not what you think."

However, she said nothing, merely smiled and rushed to her office.

Quinn emerged from the bathroom in her robes and they left the hospital wing together, the door swinging closed behind them.

"Um Albus, I'm sorry to leave you after you were nice enough to check on me, but I haven't talked to my friend in ages so I'm going to have some girl time."

"Oh yeah, I totally understand." He said, a pained a smile stretching across his face.

Quinn smiled apologetically.

"I'm sorry, but we can hang out tomorrow," Quinn said moving forward and pulling Albus into a hug. He tensed momentarily, then soon wrapped his arms around her small form, breathing deeply as the set his chin on top of her head.

"I have to go," Quinn said lifting her head from his chest.

"Hmmm?" Albus muttered, his eyes fogging over.

"I'm sorry I don't want to be late." She pulled out of his arms and whirled around moving away from him, down the corridor.

Albus sighed deeply as he leaned against the wall, watching her move away. Her long hair billowed behind her, the sunlight revealing hints of red that danced throughout her mass of sweeping waves and curls. He imagined what it would feel like to run his hands through her hair; silky and smooth, the smell of her coconutty hair filled his nostrils. He and Quinn were sitting outside in the shade of a beach tree; the night's chill crept upon them and she burrowed herself against him, looking into his face, the moonlight glints in her eyes and he starts to lean in, now staring at her lips. He shook his head violently, forcing his mind back into reality. He couldn't let himself think that way; he and Quinn were just friends and that's how it has always been but maybe that's not how it had to be. It may just be just wishful thinking but.. he had to try.
