Chapter 3: Roots
The rest of the school year flew in a blur of anxiety and studying, but after months of hard work their reward had finally arrived, summer. However, good things never seem to last and before she knew it, Quinn was already sitting in her empty compartment, reading idly. The door scraped open revealing a gang of boys she thought may have been in her year. The one in the center was familiar somehow; he was tall with jet black hair, pale skin, and square glasses perched on his nose. The other two were unfamiliar, one with fluffy brown hair, and the other with dark eyes and skin, plus a brooding look that looked permanently affixed there.
"Hello, is anyone sitting here?" said the boy who had opened the door, gesturing to the seat across from Quinn.
"Of course there is. Can't you see him?" Said Quinn said rising her eyebrows in mock astonishment.
"Was that a joke?" Said the boy smiling playfully.
"We have a winner!" Quinn muttered, waving her arms in celebration. The boy smirked lightly.
"So you're a funny one eh?" he asked sitting across from her.
"Yes, I suppose I am. Now do you mind?" Quinn said gesturing at her book.
"No I do not." He said snatching her book and flipping it over to read the cover.
"Who are you anyway." Said Quinn as the other boys settled down around her.
"Albus Potter at your service M'Lady." He said in a mock bow.
"This is a muggle book, isn't it?" He said tossing it back to her.
"Yes. You don't think less of a book just because of the writer, do you?"
"No of course not; I just thought I might have seen it in a muggle bookshop once."
"So who are you might I ask?" He said, still grinning in an amused sort of way.
"I'm Quinn Eldens."
"Eldens, Eldens… I know that name somewhere."
"Wait!" added one of the other boys suddenly "Are you the girl who broke Malfoy's hand last year?!" A wide smirk spread across Quinn's face.
"The one and only"
"No way!" Said Albus excitedly.
"Yup." Quinn said coolly. The boys guffawed loudly as the train chugged onward. Quinn took this diverted focus of attention as an opportunity to crack open her book once more.
She sat cross-legged in her seat, her long golden hair falling gently into her face, instinctively, Albus leaned forward, brushing the hair off her fair skin. Her eyes met his with the sparking intensity that resembled the finest jewels. He opened his mouth stupidly, realizing what he'd just done.
"I'm Sor…" He began
"It's okay." She said, staring at him curiously.
"Anything from the trolley dears?" said a sweet voice, breaking the awkward silence.
"Ah!" said Quinn leaping up from her seat with excitement.
However, while Quinn had gotten up to grab food, the boys in the compartment had all leaned together, absorbed in a deep conversation.
"Al, what's up with you man? You look like you just ran face-first into a wall." Said Caleb Longbottom, the fluffy haired boy.
"Yeah dude what's up?" added Daniel Lee.
"I think I know that girl, Quinn, from somewhere. I just can't remember how." Muttered Albus, glancing at Quinn as she handed over some sickles.
"She's not bad to look at. Maybe she works for a muggle modeling agency." Said Daniel watching her lazily.
"No. She wouldn't do that." Said Albus firmly.
"What makes you so sure?" Asked Caleb "I thought you said you didn't know her."
Albus opened his mouth to respond.
"Hope I'm not interrupting anything." Said Quinn sitting down, plopping her food on the seat next to her.
"Of course not." Said Daniel coolly, slouching back in his seat.
The rest of the train ride passed in a blur of laughter and joking. However, even though it seemed like the roots of an amazing friendship. It wasn't till the Halloween Hogsmeade trip they met again.
