Chapter 4: A Romp of Fauns (1)

The goat tromped through the underbrush, while Ilise sat upon his head panicking. 'I didn't mean to turn him into a goat, what am I supposed to do now?' The goat-faun bleated at her as she began clutching his thick, curly mop. 'Redland said I had to fix it myself, but I have no idea how to do that.' She propped her head up on her elbows, rolling onto her stomach. 'Think Ilise, think. Pixie dust has some strange effects at times but it shouldn't do this.' "What do you think Orvus?" She said, looking at her mount.

Orvus stopped tromping, tilted his head at Ilise and "maaaaa." 'Right, he's a goat now. Way to mess it up Ilise.' The forest flew by as Orvus made his way through the bushes with a crack every now and then. 'I wonder if this is my power? I didn't say a chant or anything, I didn't feel any magic leaving me, he just turned into a goat." In the distance, sounds of revelry could be heard growing louder with each passing moment. Orvus burst into a large clearing where large stumps were arranged like a sidewalk cafe's tables.

Running to and fro carrying large oaken trays of food and other objects were a multitude of fauns, satyrs, and a couple of large sheep. With wings. Like a bird. Orvus wove through the throng before clambering onto the largest stump, that sat in the middle of the glade, and letting out a loud bleat. Heads turned to face the pair, before grins could be seen from forest edge to the large river cutting across the bottom of the glade. The sheep had particularly toothsome smiles, putting even a crocodile to shame with their grins.

A cacophony of voices could be heard as Ilise stood on Orvus's head and an impromptu song broke out.

Look, It's the lass on her special day

The faun we sent has vanished away

And in his place is this little goat

what is a faun to say

We sent him off in our best coat

Maybe he fed it to the goat

Or maybe old Redland has made it a hat

Or a sprite turned it into a boat

Now tell us dear did he give it to a cat

What a sight it would be to see that

But old Orvus has vanished away

"That's enough of that!"

With a bang and a shout, Orvus reverted to his normal state, sending Ilise tumbling upwards as he explosively expanded. "Orvus!" the fauns cheered at the entrance, while one of the sheep flapped up to retrieve the spinning pixie.

Once the world stopped revolving around her head, Ilise looked at Orvus curiously. 'How did he turn back?' She called out, "Orvus, how did you change back?"

"It was a simple matter my dear, I had to stop the affront to the ear." Orvus cheerily replied. 'Itwas pointless to ask him about this,' Ilise sighed. The cacophony of rattling trays, clanking dishes and stomping hooves filled the glade once again. "Don't worry your head, no one ended up dead. The tables are set and the party begins, we even invited the ones with the fins." He said before gesturing to the river at the other side of the glade. Ilise nodded once before heading off to visit with the others.
