Wild thoughts started racing through her head. I'm all alone and a man is coming. I can't be found alone. That's right guests are coming today, what if it's someone from their party? What if it's someone dangerous? I-I can't be found.
She didn't understand why there was a fear that someone dangerous was coming. It didn't even cross her mind that her mother might have set this up as an opportunity to meet her fiancé. Such a thing would be too dangerous. They had no idea what that man was actually like, and if they were found together with no chaperone she would be seen as a shameless woman, who would be unworthy of being a legal wife.
So her fear persisted and she couldn't help worrying that if she were to be seen there alone something terrible would happen. Unconsciously A-Narah started moving backwards slowly, unwilling to make a single noise. Her only thoughts were that she can't be found.
She backed up until her heel bumped the door to the dressing room. She then reached behind her searching for the knob, turning it, she opened the door a crack and slinked in. As the door shut, she could hear the door to the private receiving room from the main hall open.
A-Narah turned to look at the dressing room. The footsteps were still coming. She looked around rapidly hoping to find a place to hide, but there was nowhere to go except for the large wardrobe. A-Narah ignored the wardrobe and quietly ran to the next door leading into the bedroom. The bedroom was the innermost place to every residence, and she felt more comfort in going there than staying in the small dressing room.
A-Narah had never seen her mother's bedroom, other than her mother only the servants and father would have. When she entered the room was dark and all the curtains were drawn. She thought that whoever it was wouldn't be coming any further. Surely not even a stranger would dare…
But just when she had such a naïve thought, she sensed movement on the other side of the door. She completely panicked. Abandoning all pride and dignity, she got on her knees and crawled to the bed. She pulled out the heavy bed stool and rolled under the skirt that hung around the bottom of the bed. She then quickly pulled the stool back into place and held her breathe. Under the bed there was complete darkness, and it only amplified the smallest of sounds.
Under that bed all of A-Narah's titles and birthrights were stripped away. The confident daughter of a powerful noble was gone and in her place was nothing but a terrified child who couldn't stop shaking.
The door to the bedroom opened and the stranger entered.
Silent tears started to roll down A-Narah's cheeks. The stranger moved about the room. A-Narah couldn't see anything but she felt like he was getting closer.
Then she heard a voice, an all too familiar one, but it didn't lessen her panic in the least.
