Second Chances

Angela stirred from her position and smiled to herself. She gently lifted Edward's hand and carefully came out of the bed. After their blissful union, she wanted to call Chris immediately to ask him about her divorce. She gritted her teeth at the thought of having been seduced by Edward first before finding the truth.

She took her phone after she got dressed and dialed Chris. The line connected her to Chris' number. She waited patiently and after six rings, he picked up.

"Hi Chris, um, I'm sorry to disturb you this afternoon, but I was wondering if I could take my copy of the divorce papers?" She asked cautiously.

"Of course. You can wait for it to be delivered as I have mailed it three days ago."

Chris' answer to her request surprised her. So the divorce did finally came through. Why did Edward lied to her and made her believed he burned them? Feeling betrayed, she turned around and saw Edward standing behind her.

"Thank you Chris." She ended the call feeling pained and aghast.

"You didn't waste any time to confirm it do you?"

Flabbergasted, her hand found its way to Edward's face. A loud slapping sound echoed in the room. She stared at him with murder. There was no measure as to how pained she was at the moment except that she felt numb all over. Her eyes watered painfully and her lips quivered with unsung cry.

"Why lied to me?" She asked.

"Because I wanted you back so badly." Edward's statement was too good to hear but she had her fill of his lies and deceit.

"No you didn't." She hissed.

"How do you know my feelings Angela? You are only aware of your own pain, what about me, do you know how I feel?"

"How should I know when you are so stuck up with your own needs and wants? There was no room for us in your head Edward, just you." Angela shot back.

"You don't exactly know that. You don't know now many nights I woke up sweating because I lost you. You have no idea how I feel every time we go to the resort and I can't touch you the way I did."

Angela wanted to believe him, but there were so many lies for her to believe another of his stories.

"You are blessed with such a sweet tongue Edward. You can make the dead rise from their tomb." She told him angrily.

"And your tongue is sharper than any blade I ever held. You need to control your temper whenever I am around you so we will not always clash."

"My tongue is none of your business." Angela turned to pick up her things to wait on Dominic.

"You will not turn your back to me when I am not yet finish Angela."

Angela turned her head to face Edward. Her eyes were blazing with fire. "I never finished any fight with you remember? You said that so why would you expect me to finish this now when you no longer have authority over me."

With one long stride, Edward grasped her arm yanking her hard to him, his face inches away from her. "You need to learn to understand that men have pride and we take every woman's rebellion an insult to our masculinity. So the next time you lash at me with your sharp tongue, remember that you are not just dealing just the man but also his pride!"

"To hell with your pride!" Angela hissed yanking her arm free from his grasp. "Your pride is what separated us in the beginning."

"Pray tell me how's that? You need to clear out everything now sweetheart."

"Don't call me sweetheart, because I was never your sweetheart. And to answer you, if it was not for your pride, you should have looked for the woman to love, courted her and bring her to the altar where you will swear your love and fidelity rather than look for any random woman who would respond to your call for a contract of marriage in name only then once she agreed to it, change the terms of the agreement demanding her to give you heirs and become your whore whenever you wanted to be on top of her."

Edward narrowed his eyes on her, "So you think you were just one of those random women I offered contract with?" He laughed bitterly. "You are wrong Angela! So wrong!" He brought his hands to his head and ruffled his hair in frustration. "I handpicked you Angela. Never forget that I know your father, I had made my own investigation before allowing you to meet me. That day when you saw me at the park, I was meaning to meet you in person first so I would know if I can handle your temper, little she cat. Dominic had already warned me about your temper, but he also told me you are sweet and kind once handled right. So I took the chance. I did not just jump into the pool without looking whether it was filled with water or not. I am a businessman, and I always know where to put my money, when to put it and how will I put it. Or let me rephrase, I will always place my eggs in the best nest."

Angela glared at him, digesting every word he said and debating to herself whether she had to believe in them and hoped he didn't lie to her again or to not believe him at all. She took a labored breath and went to the window.

"You lied to me many times and I have reached that point where I don't know which of the words you said are true and which were not." She bowed down staring at the window sill.

"I beg you to believe me on this. I promise I will never lie to you again."

She could feel the heaviness in his voice. She was so close into melting in his arms right now. But she feared the price she had to pay for dropping her guard.

"I don't know Edward." Her voice was low and pained.

She heard his footfalls coming towards her. He placed his hands on her shoulder and rested his chin on top of her head. "Just this once, Angela, just this once. I promise I will make it right to you again." His voice was thick with emotion. She felt him shiver. His touch was warm. Then he embraced her from behind hugging her close to him. She could feel his pounding heart, his ragged breath and the gentle tremor of his skin.

Angela turned to face him. She looked up so she could stare into his eyes hoping to read his emotion. There was so much going in his eyes. She doesn't know what it was. One thing was for certain, there was sincerity in his brown depths.

"I called for Dominic, he will be here in any minute." Angela informed him in a low voice with downcast eyes.

Edward released her to put on his trousers. Angela had forgotten that he was barely clad. Once he had put on his pants and shirt, he came back to her and knelt down before her. He opened a box and presented to her a sapphire ring set in white gold studded with tiny blue diamond circling around the bigger stone.

"Let us start over. Will you marry me for good this time? Second chances for both of us?" His eyes were pleading for acceptance and forgiveness.

Angela trembled at the thought of marrying him truly without contract to bind them aside from the marriage certificate and no obligations to fulfil. It was so tempting but her fears were greater, so it seemed.

When she did not answer, Edward's shoulders slumped. He was trying to read her mind. "No more second chances?"

Angela tried to look away but he grabbed her hand and placed them on his chest making her to bend lower so her hand could reach him. "I beg you to give this chance. I know I had done you so many wrong in the past. I can't blame you if you won't believe in me now, but I am asking you as my wife without contract in my other hand, just my hand on the ring and your hand on my chest so you could feel my sincerity right now."

"If you're asking me to be your wife simply because I am with child, for fear you might be deprived of your rights over this child, I swear to you I won't do that. I will give you all the privileges you deserve as a father to his child, but making you as my husband is still impossible as of this time." Angela pulled her hand slowly. Just a mere touch to his skin would make her mind muddle. She wanted to think clearly.

"I promise, if you say yes, I will be the best husband you could ever ask. I will tell you everything and I would even put a tracker on me so you would know where I am. I am willing to carry a body cam so you will see every day who I am with, who I talk to or who I am meeting. And I won't get tired of doing it every day for the rest of my life." Edward sweetened his offer surprising Angela.

"Really?" Her voice was laced with surprise.

"Yes, if you wanted to."

As much as Angela wanted to say no, another part of her was screaming yes. And that part of her is gaining ground. A tear rolled down her check. Edward quickly stood up to wipe her tear before it fell to the ground.

Her lips trembled at such gentle gesture. She nodded slowly praying she will not regret this day for the rest of her life.

"Oh thank you!" Edward exclaimed happily hugging her while lifting her up. Then he gingerly put her on the ground planting her feet steadily so he could take her hand and place the ring on her finger. "You won't regret this. I will be your dandy."

"That sound scary." Angela smiled.

He smiled back and planted a soft kiss on her lips. "I will marry you. This time, it will be right. This time, I promise it won't hurt. And this time, I will be putting all my eggs in your best, the best best. This time, nothing will hold me back."
