Chapter 24: #22 Zanku
It was already night when Ren arrived at guild. When he entered he noticed same officer who offered him job last time. Officer immediately noticed Ren and his mood instantly became better since his job was to find Ryu, but he couldn't find him so only thing he could do was to sit and wait.
"Mister Ryu!! I am so glad you came here I have another job to offer to you." Officer said in excited voice.
"If it's another babysitting then I don't want it." Ren said without hearing him out.
"No, no...please hear me out mister Ryu" Officer immediately despaired when he heard Ren
"Fine, make it quick" Ren said while checking other quests in guild.
After few minutes officer was done with explanation of Ren's job.
'Ren, take it! This is win-win situation, you will be able to meet with that ice woman and go on da- *cough* I mean to train. And when you will master water energy I will finally be able to transform to beautiful maiden and seduce you.' Shell said in serious voice.
When all three heard what she said with serious voice they truly didn't know whether she is just teasing or not. Ren could only pray that he will never master water energy, not because he is afraid of getting seduced but because her pestering will become much worse in humanoid form.
'But I guess Shell is right, I could use this opportunity to train with Esdeath and maybe even with Kurome to perfect my reanimation.' Ren thought
"Ok, I take the job, when and where should I go?" Ren asked officer
"Ah, you need to go to general Esdeath's room, tomorrow afternoon will be good time." Officer already relaxed when he heard Ren's agreement.
"I will be there" Ren said and walked out of guild. He planned to go out of Capital to get used to his combination with Shadow but when he was walking he saw in alley man and woman. He decided to ignore them but when he heard "Splendid, splendid" he stopped walking.
'What the hell, he is still alive? Shouldn't Night Raid kill me some time ago, or have I changed canon so much? Well good for me to have some warm up before training' Ren thought while walking towards the alley with his hands in robe's pockets.
"Please don't kill me I will do 'anything'" Woman said which disgusted Ren so he decided to wait until Zanku is done.
'I can understand that not everyone can be strong but to sell yourself, what kind of worth will your life hold? Plus it's not nice to interrupt someone when they are talking so I will play nice guy.' Ren thought while waiting for Zanku to finish.
"Haa there are so many people in Capital I can cut down. Splendid, splendid" Zankus said aloud after he was done with beheading the woman. He wanted to find new prey but was interrupted by voice.
"Where are you going Zanku?"
When Zanku turned around he was surprised to see smiling man leaning on wall.
'I couldn't sense him at all yet he was so close...' Zanku thought.
"Thanks to you I won't have to waste my time on finding anyone." Zanku said to Ren while getting near him.
"Show me your so called beheading techniques" Ren said with mocking smile which enraged Zanku.
"Don't mock me. My techniques are best!" Zanku said while attacking Ren with his hand blades, Ren just kept dodging with minimal movement and with his hands still in pockets. After few attacks Ren sarcastically said: "Your techniques are indeed best."
"YOU-!!" Zanku didn't know what to say so he decided to go all out and activated his Teigu Spectator. This time Ren wasn't able to dodge attacks with minimal movement and had to pour wind energy into his legs but he still had hands in pockets and in his eyes could be see contempt.
'Lets see how much angry you can get' Ren thought.
When Zanku saw how Ren still didn't take him seriously and had contempt in his eyes he really become mad and casted illusion on Ren to see his most precious person. Ren's eyes widened and he stopped moving. When Zanku saw this he smiled and walked to Ren, when he was close enough he raised his hand blades to behead Ren.
But when Zankus swung his blades he couldn't see Ren anymore, he was confused until he heard voice behind him.
"Surprise" Ren said.
When Zanku turned around he saw same man but now in black robe with black eyes, black crown on his head and scythe in his hand.
"How?! Why my illusion didn't work on you?!" Zanku asked while being confused by Ren's change in appearance.
"Why? I guess because I don't have any precious person, and even if I had I would not be so stunned by seeing them....idiot" Ren said but still thought while it didn't show at least Shadow in his humanoid form. He could kinda guess that Spectator would not be able to make illusion of animals but it seems that it can't make illusion of spirits in general.
"Doesn't matter, even if illusion doesn't work on you I can still predict your moves and you won't be able to even make a scratch on me, HAHA-" Before Zanku could even finish his laughter, his head was already rolling on the ground.
"I guess even your Spectator couldn't follow my Flash step's speed" Ren said aloud while looking at Zanku's Teigu.
'Now what to do with it? I could take it and sell it to someone but that would be too boring on other hand if I left it here and someone fated to it could pick it up, it might result in more fights in future and maybe with even stronger guys than Zanku.'
------Esdeath's room------
Officer who hired Ren tonight knocked on general's door and waited for response. After some time he heard cold voice: "What is it?"
"General Esdeath, I just came to report that your new subordinates will gather at conference room tomorrow. Also mister Ryu accepted job tonight and will come to your room tomorrow." Officer reported and quickly went away not wanting to irritate general.
'So he will come tomorrow, lets see if you can get past my first test, Ryu' Esdeath thought while having evil smile on her face.
