Chapter 8: SEPARATION- JOURNEY OF VASANT
Vasant and group left the Lataka kingdom and started to the north of the kingdom. They rode their fine horses for three days but couldn't reach the end of forest. On the noon of third day when they were thirsty, they came across a lake and an endless banyan tree on the bank of the lake. They felt happy. They drank the water and fed the horses too. They cooked food and took rest there for some time. Then they observed the banyan tree carefully.
"See how strange this banyan tree looks! There are many new birds on this tree. Even carriages can fit on these branches. "
"Shall we see the length of these branches? " Ram asked to which all others agreed except Samba.
"Four of us will go on four directions on these branches. We should come back in six months. Even if someone comes back earlier, they should wait until all others come back. Samba will stay here guarding our horses and things." deciding on this, Vasant went to east, Pravara went to west, Danda went to north and Ram to the south on the branches of the tree.
Vasant's journey :
Vasant went to east. He started walking on the branches of tree for two days. Then he had to walk on four on the branch for four days. Then he crawled for eight days. Then he saw the end of the branch. From there he saw a strange thing.
First it was thick fog which then disappeared and a light appeared. After that he could see many high raised buildings. 'This looks like a city. I have six months to go back anyway. So, I will go into the city and check it out.' He went into the city. But the city seemed deserted. Not a single human in sight nor a bird. This looked stranger than Kanina's kingdom.
The city was like a maze since all buildings look a like. He walked on the same routes many times until he went to a new route leading him to a fort. He was thinking to go back if there are no people here. He started searching for the door into the fort but couldn't see one. After a lot of searching he came across a chain hanging on the wall of fort. He pulled the chain with which a cave opened into the fort. As soon as he entered the cave, it closed up.
He walked some distance until he reached a garden where he took some rest. That garden was also deserted. He walked again through buildings again until he reached a beautiful building. He climbed the steps of it and reached more beautiful palace. He entered that palace. There he saw a super beautiful woman sleeping on a bed.
He was unable to wake her up from her sleep so he kept staring at her beauty. After some time she woke up and saw him. " Who are you? How did you come to this demon ruled building? Tell me your story and make me happy. Be my guest."
Vasant told his story to her and asked about her.
"My name is Kalavati. This city is owned by a female demon. It steals money from kingdoms. She comes here once a week and puts all the treasures into buildings and seals them. She attacked Avanti kingdom once and killed all the people there. Then she saw the two year old me sleeping in golden craddle. She brought me here with her and is raising me like her own daughter. I also treat her like my own mother. When she comes, she teaches me various things and tells me stories of the kingdoms she visited. That is the reason I recognized you as a respectable person even if i never saw any male person. There are many new things in our fort. My mother came just yesterday and won't come till next week. So, you can watch all the new things until then."
Vasant fell into a trance because of her beauty and hugged and kissed her. She liked him too. They enjoyed their love for five days. That day Kalavati said "Demon is coming. I will change you into a lizard and put you on a wall. Stay like that until mother leaves. Then I will change you back. This is one of the skills my mother taught me." and she did just as she said. Soon the demon came home.
"Dear! Why does it smell human in our house today?" Demon was wary.
"Can humans come in here? Even if they come, how can they enter this fort? I am a human too. You don't like my smell right! So, Just kill me." Kalavati started crying.
Demon regretted asking and pacified her daughter. Then she told the news of new kingdoms and slept that night. As soon as the dawn broke, demon left the house. Kalavati woke up, got ready and changed Vasant back to his human form. She served him with food. Then they started in their world of making love again. Many days passed this way.
"Kalavati! How can we keep hiding for the rest of our lives? Your mother is a demon. She might eat you when she is hungry. It is better to leave here and live our lives happily some where else." Said Vasant one day.
"You don't know the power of that demon. Where ever we go, she can come there in seconds and kill us both and eat." scared Kalavati said.
After some days Vasant made a plan and shared it with Kalavati. Before the demon came she changed Vasant into a lizard and put him on wall so that he could see the scene there. When the demon came there, Kalavati was weeping. Demon couldn't see her crying and asked if there was anything which is bothering her or anyone who was insulting her in demon's absence. Demon asked Kalavati for the reason for her sadness for a long time. Then Kalavati started saying her worries.
"You are roaming around many kingdoms. There are many powerful demons and demon catchers out there. What if someone some day kills you? What will happen to me then? You already accumulated a lot of treasure. Isn't it enough for you? If not, just eat me." She started weeping again.
"So, this was the reason for your sadness. Don't worry. No one can kill me. Where ever I go, my life source is still hidden here. Knowing it is really difficult. Two demons can't stay at one place anyway. "
"How can i get satisfied with your half hearted answer. Tell me the secret properly."
Demon thought her daughter is really lovely and caring towards her and started telling the story of her hidden life source.
