Chapter 24: Dogs
"Are you nervous?"
Bai Ruoxi raised her head, tearing her gaze away from the documents on her hand. She saw Ming Lu grinning at her through the rearview mirror, and she returned his stares in a playful arrogant manner.
"Nervous? Haven't felt that in years."
Her answer earned a chuckle from Ming Lu. He raised a brow teasingly, "Don't come back crying to me."
"You wish." Bai Ruoxi rolled her eyes.
The car was once again filled with comfortable silence as it sped through the crowded streets.
It was Monday, the day Bai Ruoxi would officially start her work as the CEO of Bai & Li Enterprise. To say she wasn't nervous had to be a lie, but she wouldn't let people saw through her. Whatever the cost, she needed to keep her head high and shoulders back. No matter how they would judge her, it didn't matter.
When Ming Lu peeked at his young miss through the rear mirror again, a smile crept onto his lips. The sun was blaring through the window and shone directly onto her hair, enhancing its beautiful color of brown. Her eyes were radiating with confidence. She looked fearless, and he was glad.
Initially, he was worried that Bai Ruoxi would face difficulties in coping with the sudden pressure of becoming a CEO. Turned out he was thoroughly mistaken. He had forgotten that she was no longer the same child who used to cling onto him.
Ming Lu pressed his lips into a thin line as a feeling of relief mixed with regret filled his chest, but he quickly brushed it aside.
Bai & Li Enterprise headquarter was located in the middle of the bustling city. After a few more minutes of driving, the grand skyscraper was finally in sight. Its unique twisted shape was very eye-catching even from afar. The front side of the building had a landscape similar to a park, with fountains and a fishpond. It wasn't seldom for them to be having tourists roaming around or even going inside the building.
Soon, Bai Ruoxi's black Maybach stopped right at the entrance of the company. A few workers turned their heads in curiosity and started to wonder what kind of client their company was expecting today.
When Ming Lu stepped out of the driver seat, their eyes widened in astonishment with mouths hanging open. They all had one same thought in mind; how could such a god be a mere driver?!
As he walked around the car to open the door of the passenger seat, people held their breath in anticipation. They were curious about what kind of person could hire this superior grade male worthy to be an international model as a personal chauffeur.
From the inside of the car, Bai Ruoxi distinctly saw the curiosity in their eyes through the tinted window. A beautiful smirk bloomed on her lips as confidence gleamed in her eyes.
"Let's not disappoint them, shall we?" She murmured to herself.
With a deep breath, she elegantly climbed out of the car the moment Ming Lu opened the door for her.
The eyes of the bystanders immediately beamed in pleasant surprise when they saw a goddess stepping out. Clothed in an expensive white suit dress and hair tied into a simple ponytail, Bai Ruoxi held her head high and shoulders back.
The sight of her standing next to Ming Lu immediately ensued chaos.
"Are they models?! What are they doing here?!"
"I've never seen them before! Such eye candies early in the morning!"
"Are they together?! Somebody, look for their Instagram please!"
Ming Lu chuckled to their blunt statements. Did they not know that he could hear what they were saying?
He then glanced teasingly at Bai Ruoxi, "Young Miss, we look good together, apparently."
Bai Ruoxi rolled her eyes, "I wouldn't have walked with you if we didn't."
"Does that mean you wouldn't like me if I was ugly?" Ming Lu held his chest dramatically, "You're hurting my fragile heart, Young Miss. I didn't know you were the type to favor people over their looks."
She narrowed her eyes suspiciously at him. Wasn't that the same sentence she told Jun Yihan?
Feeling annoyed, Bai Ruoxi immediately pinched the side of Ming Lu's waist, earning a scowl from him.
"Young Miss, this is abuse! I could file a report!"
Bai Ruoxi smirked and placed one hand on her hip, "I'm sorry. I forgot that we weren't allowed to abuse dogs."
D-dogs?!
"Young Miss!" Ming Lu growled playfully as he clutched his chest tighter, "I have the physique and looks of a Greek God, my charm can easily sweep man and woman off their feet! How could you compare me to some dogs?!"
"Fine, fine, keep your nonsense to yourself." Bai Ruoxi chuckled as she rubbed Ming Lu's well-combed hair into a giant mess. "I'm going in."
Seeing that she had relaxed a lot more, Ming Lu smiled warmly. He lifted a hand to fix the loose strands of her hair. "Do your best."
"When have I never?" Bai Ruoxi returned the smile. She shifted her focus to the entrance which was swarmed by employees who had been watching their banters since the start.
When Bai Ruoxi walked into the lobby, the receptionists immediately calmed themselves and put on their best smile.
They were trained to provide the best services and stay calm even when facing the most unreasonable clients. Judging from Bai Ruoxi's appearance, they thought that she would be one of those. But to their surprise, Bai Ruoxi strode past without even bothering to look at them. She leisurely trolled to the private elevator like she owned the place.
The receptionists glanced at each other nervously until one of them decided to leave the front desk and chased after Bai Ruoxi with a security guard.
"Ma'am, I apologize but you aren't allowed to--" Her words were suddenly cut off when her eyes caught the sight of a shining black card on Bai Ruoxi's hand. It was an exclusive keycard for the confidential documents storage rooms and also private elevators. "--enter..."
"Is there any problem?" Bai Ruoxi smiled as she swiped her keycard and gracefully stepped into the private elevator.
The receptionist was shocked silly, nevertheless, she still answered professionally. "No, ma'am. I apologize for my carelessness." She bowed deeply and stared at Bai Ruoxi in amazement as the doors closed.
