Before my grandpa disappeared he left a box on his desk. It was labeled {For Xander} so I guess it was for me.
I was always scared to open it, it's been sitting in my closet for almost three years. My grandpa used to be the only person I had... he taught me how to light a fire with just some stones, and how to fold paper into a shape where if you throw it, it will glide like a bird.
I feel like if I open the box it will be like I'm finally excepting he is gone. I feel like a baby thinking this because come on.
I'm 17 and scared to open a stupid box?
At this point it's probably illegal. Ever since a group of rebels came into the city the Rulers have made more and more rules.
"Xander get the fuck over here dude."
I let out a groan and slowly standup from my mattress.
"Bro remember? The new rules? Religion school starts a hour earlier in the mornings now. You have literally 7 minutes. Chop chop" My brother Kuey practically sings.
"Oh shit, I forgot about that. I'll be there in a sec"
I race to the washroom, get a change of shorts and a grey ripped tee on and I meet Kuey at the front door.
"I'm ready" I say, completely out of breath.
"Dang, I think you broke a world record" he laughs.
We both stand side to side at the front door until we see the sky out the window flash green.
The door then slides open and a tablet appears in front of our faces.
Kuey steps forward first, letting the tablet scan his finger. A beep then goes off and he is signed out of the house.
I'm next, I step forward, press my thumb to the scanner until it beeps.
*Meep*
The tablet disappears and we both step onto the conveyer, which leads us to the enterence of the building.
"Hello Mrs Gale!" Kuey says with a smile to the old women riding the conveyer beside us.
"Why hello Mr Nahx, these new times are quite a change aren't they now." She reply's.
"Haha I could barely get Xander awake this morning, thank the Eüriā that he is a fast runner." He laughs.
Mrs Gale smiles once more and then the conveyer comes to a halt.
Mrs Gale steps off beside us and starts walking toward the factory's while me and Kuey go toward religion school.
It makes me so nervous walking on the streets. If you step off the path for even a second the guards will either blast you (killing you instantly). Or capture you and make you a underliar, also known as a Slave.
We arent allowed to talk on the streets either, they are always listening.
Everywhere you look there is a guard. They stand upright under their metal suits.
There is rumours that they are robots, absolutely invisible.
Both my mother and my father have become underliars...
that's why me and Kuey have never even considered breaking a rule.
Once we arrive at the steps of the school a teacher comes out and takes a blood sample from every student.
She then will put the sample in a little machine which will say the students Name, Parents, Crimes and grades.
Kuey goes first because he is a year older, the teacher analyzes his blood and he is free to go to his seat.
Then some other boys his age get tested too and then it's my turn.
The teacher sticks the sharp needle in my finger and looks me right in the eye, I think she sees how nervous I am and leaves the needle in extra long leaving a scar when she takes it out. Eek.
She puts my blood in the machine and I am free to go.
When class starts all the students get handed a book called "The History Of Earth and The Eüriā"
The book follows the rules of the earth, why they exist and all the boring history that the Eüriā have.
They never forget to rub in about how humans suck either. The school reminds us almost every day that humans will never have power like the Eüriā.
At least we don't have huge creepy dark eyes and horns though.
Class goes on for 4 hours and then the sky flashes green, releasing us all for lunch.
We all line up in front of the doors waiting for them to open.
But it doesn't.
People start to murmur and even the teachers look confused.
{Everyone Please Stay In Your Building, we are dealing with some issues}
Me and Kuey lock eyes, very confused.
"EVERYONE LOOK!" Someone yells from the window.
Fire.
There is fire...
The windows start to close and we are told to go back to our seats.
I close my eyes and try to cancel out the sounds of people screaming outside.
But it's too hard.
