Chapter 2: Faded into Darkness

I slapped the hand beside my head, struggling to move away. With my head feeling like it had been cracked open, I tried to get up.

"Don't move."

He pushed me back to the sofa.

"You're sick." He pressed his hand on my forehead, I tried to shake it off but the movement made me want to vomit.

With effort, I was able to move away from the hand but he placed his other hand on my shoulder and moved his hand to my neck. He felt for a pulse. I could feel my heart beating frantically.

"What were you thinking?" He gritted his teeth and went back to his table, pressing some buttons on the phone.

"Send for Dr. Jackson." He ordered his secretary before going to the adjacent room.

It hurts to keep my eyes open, so I gave in and closed it. When I felt a cold, wet towel on my forehead I tried to move away.

"So stubborn." He sounded annoyed, "What were you thinking?"

He pressed the towel on my forehead making sure that the weight would hold me in place. "You could have just called and not come."

"I wanted to finish it today. I thought it was urgent and important." Talking hurts my throat. "I just need to sign."

"Shut up." He pushed me down the sofa, forcing me to lie down, "Your voice hurts my ears. Don't talk." It must be because I sounded like rusted irons grating against each other

He took the towel, dropped it in the water-filled silver bowl that used to hold some trinkets on the side table when I got in, and wrung the water out. When he tried to place it back on my forehead, I tried to sit up.

"Stay down, or I'll push you down." Fear sent shivers to my arm. This feeling, I thought I had left it years ago.

He got up and pressed some buttons on a remote. It must have been the AC since I felt the place turned warmer. He might have thought it was because of the cold. But I feel like burning up.

"The papers." I croaked. He glared at me.

"I want to wring your neck right now." He gritted as he used the towel to wipe my face. "So shut up."

After making sure my face is wiped clean, he places the towel back in the bowl.

"OK sit up to drink?" He helped me adjust to sit and placed a glass of water near my lips, "You need hydration."

But I could barely open my mouth. So weak. My ears are ringing. I tried to open my mouth, but the water just trickled down the side of my mouth, down my jaw to my neck.

He sighed, took the glass, and drank the water. I felt his lips and the lukewarm water in my mouth before everything faded into darkness.
