Chapter 4: Another school day

Scarlett assisted Abby into a empty class room for some privacy and helped Abby lower herself into a chair.

"I'm so sorry Abby, I didn't attack you on purpose. You freaked me out by grabbing me." Scarlett explained lamely.

"How did I freak YOU out?" Abby accentuated. "I was calling out to you and you never acknowledged me so I grabbed your shoulder and your reaction was to hit me!" Abby wheezed out, still slightly winded from Scarlett's attack.

"I am truly sorry Abby, I had a really freaky night last night and now I'm super jumpy." Scarlett rubbed the back of her head and avoided her friends eyes. 'Should I tell Abby about my experience last night? For one I don't even know if it even happened and for two she will probably think I'm crazy!' Scarlett thought to herself while Abby looked up at her, awaiting an explanation.

When one didn't come Abby sighed.

"A freaky night? Are you going to explain or are you just going to keep me in suspense over here?" Abby questioned after finally getting her breath back. Scarlett hesitated for a moment and then jumped into explaining the whole experience.

"...Then I woke up in my bed and I have none of the injuries that I got. I have no idea if it was just a really vivid and weird dream or if I'm going crazy." Scarlett averted her eyes from her friend and waited for Abby to start laughing at her.

"So you saw Cameron? But he sounds super different... Maybe it was a dream Scarlett... But I wouldn't worry, your not crazy, even though you gave me a good wallop." Scarlett lifted her eyes to meet Abby's.

"You sure I'm not crazy? And I am really sorry Abby, I am just so freaked out right now and super jumpy." Scarlett explained. Abby gave her a small smile and nodded.

"Don't worry Scar I don't think you are crazy. And it's okay, I completely understand. I would feel freaked out too if I experienced that." Scarlett sighed in relief to her friends acceptance of her story and smiled back. Suddenly the bell both made them jump and Abby lept from the chair.

"Shit we are going to be late to English. Hopefully Mr. Jones doesn't snap our heads off." Abby cried as she grabbed Scarlett's wrist and dragged her from the room, both of them bolting to their classroom. Once they got there and sprung open the door they received a shock. Mr. Jones wasn't in his normal seat behind his desk but someone else was.

"Good morning ladies," The woman sitting in Mr. Jones' seat said pleasantly. "If you could find your seats I will begin today's class."

Scarlett and Abby quickly sat down in their seats next to each other and gave each other wary looks as they shared the same thought. Mr. Jones never missed a class in the years that he had been teaching in the school. Not even while he was sick, so where was he?

The substitute introduced herself to the class as Miss Taylor and continued on with the lesson. After a few minutes passed by the classroom door swung open again, interrupting Miss Taylor's lesson once more. Everyone's eyes darted to the door way and gasped. Scarlett's heart stopped when her eyes fell on the person walking into the room.

"Sorry I'm late," Cameron's voice cut through the silent classroom as he approached Miss Taylor's desk. "I couldn't find my new locker." he explained to Miss Taylor. She nodded politely.

"Well find your seat please and if there are no more interruptions I'll finish my class." She said pointedly as Cameron sat down beside Scarlett's other side that wasn't occupied. The seat that had been empty for a year and a half. Scarlett examined him carefully. His eyes weren't the omnious glow they were during their previous interaction but their normal dark black. His body was still covered by the toned muscle she had encounted last night. Scarlett turned to Abby and saw her eyes bulging out of her head like Scarlett was sure her's were. She looked back over at Cameron and locked eyes with him. He gave her his famous smirk and lent towards her whilst Miss Taylor's back was turned.

"Good to see you again Scar. I missed you." He whispered and then straightened up to pay attention to the class. Scarlett could only gape at him in response.

'What the hell is going on here?!' her brain screamed.

Scarlett and Abby sat out in the school grounds underneath their favorite tree, away from all the other students, during lunch trying to figure out what was going on.

"It is so weird that I have that crazy dream last night about Cameron and now Mr. Jones is missing and Cameron is suddenly back at school!" Scarlett said as she continued to eat her lunch.

"I know. It's super creepy," Abby agreed, having already finished her food. "I don't remember Mr. Jones ever missing a day of school. Where could he be?" Scarlett shrugged in response.

"Beats me. I'm more confused about where Cameron has been all this time and my weird ass dre-"

"Are my ears burning?" A voice calmly said beside Scarlett. She jumped and turned towards the voice, about to tell the person to mind their own business when her voice got caught in her throat. Cameron was standing a few feet away from her and Abby smirking.

"Hey Cameron," Abby said coolly before Scarlett could say anything. "We were just talking about how you had suddenly reappeared."

"Ah, that," he replied just as coolly. "Everyone seems to be talking about that."

"Well yea," Scarlett snapped at him. "Everyone thought you were dead and now your suddenly back!" Scarlett felt her temperature and emotions rising. 'How can he act like it's no big deal!' her brain cried.

"Dead? Seriously?" Cameron chuckled. "Wow, imaginations sure do run wild in this small town. I just went to live with my Aunt and Uncle a couple of towns over."

"Right..." Abby said slowly. "So you've been with your Aunt and Uncle all this time? And you can't really blame anyone. After your parents died everyone.." Abby suddenly stopped mid sentence as Cameron's expression turned dark.

"Can we not talk about that please. For christ sake I don't need to be reminded about why I left in the first place." Cameron snapped his voice filled with venom and his expression dark and cold.

"We're sorry Cam. It's just that... No one wanted it to happen and everyone was thinking you had killed yourself after the incident. The only thing the cops found was your bike and a bit of your blood in the forest outside of town. Everyone was super worried." Scarlett rushed out, trying to keep the peace. She felt her emotions change from anger to sympathy for Cameron. Cameron's expression calmed and a smirk danced around his lips.

"Well I can understand why everyone would think that. I was just out for a ride on my bike in the forest. Trying to figure everything out you know," he dropped his eyes and rubbed the back of his head, as if contemplating something. "And I got injured and called my Uncle to come get me. I stayed with them until I could come back to this town. After my parents... After everything that happened I couldn't stay here. The memories were all too fresh."

Scarlett felt her anger rise a bit, wrestling with her sympathy. Cameron rose his eyes to hers and smirked again.

"It's great to know everyone was so worried though," He said as he crossed his arms over his chest while still smirking. "The cops could have done a better job. I'm obviously not dead." Scarlett's anger won out over her sadness and sympathy and she scowled at him. Had he forgotten that her Father was the chief at the town's police station.

"Are you fucking kidding me right now!" Scarlett snarled at Cameron as she jumped to her feet and closed the distance between them, Abby following her as she approached him.

"Everyone thought you were fucking dead! Abby and I thought you were fucking dead! And now your telling me that you were at your Aunt and Uncle's house! We are your best friends and you couldn't even call?! Even when we were worried sick?!" Scarlett yelled into his face and she saw pain dance through Cameron's eyes. She could also feel that she had caught the attention of several other students from her yelling. Cameron reached his hand out to Scarlett as if to comfort her but she battered his hand away.

"Scar I didn't-" Cameron started before getting cut off.

"Oh fuck this! I'm out of here." Scarlett hissed at him as she started to stalk away from him. "Scar please we need to-" Cameron advanced towards her retreating back and reached out grab her shoulder. As he grabbed her she whirled around and punched him in the face, not allowing him to finish his sentence.

"Stay away from me Cam," Scarlett hissed at him as Abby grabbed her arm and started to tug her away from Cameron and Scarlett vaguely noticed that a crowd of students had started to surround them. "I don't want you anywhere near me!" She finished as she turned and started to follow Abby away from Cameron, her anger filling her like boiling water. Abby dragged her back into the school building and turned to her, now that they were away from the crowd.

"What the hell Scar? I understand that you are upset at Cam but why did you hit him? His parents had died and he needed to leave!" Abby inquired as she stared into Scarlett's eyes. "I know he didn't contact us but that's understandable, he needed space."

"Yea space," Scarlett snorted. "We are best friends! We have been through thick and thin together so why didn't he contact me? Why didn't he want my help?"

"I don't know," Abby said sounding defeated. "Maybe you should ask him?"
