Chapter 1: Stars

When I was a little girl, I stared out my little square window in the corner of my room. I always opened it and smiled as the cool breeze went through my frizzy hair and made my skin tingle. It lifted the side curtains and made them fly up in the air like disfigured birds. I always wondered, what's the point of all those stars? There are millions, billions, trillions! But that doesn't mean we need all of them. The moonlight filled the edges of my face as I stuck my head out farther to catch a glimpse of a shooting star passing by. My eyes widened at the sight and I grinned. I closed my eyes and made a wish.

"WANG SHU!! GET UP!! WE'RE SERIOUSLY GOING TO BE LATE!" I jerked up looking horribly disheveled. "How long have you been sleeping in? We're going to be late!" cried my roommate. I sighed as I saw Xi Fang's red face. She really was angry this time. "YOU'RE LUCKY I WAITED FOR YOU! NOW WE'RE BOTH LATE!" she yelled.

"I was dreaming about stars..." I said clumsily knowing that was a pathetic excuse. Xi Fang glared at me with sparks flaring in her eyes so I quickly jumped out of bed and tugged at random clothes in my drawers. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and sighed. I threw on a plain white T-shirt, yanked on some shorts, and slid into my ragged old shoes and ran my brush through my hair only once. I rushed into the bathroom and nearly tripped on a fallen lip gloss on the ground. "Pick up your stuff Xi Fang," I shouted from across the hall.

"Pick up your pace Wang Shu," shouted Xi Fang. I scrubbed my teeth until my gums hurt and tied up my hair in a messy bun with pieces of loose hair falling at the corners of my face. Taking out my phone from the back pocket of my shorts, I directed my thumb towards the weather app and scanned my eyes across the screen. Seeing that the weather was around fifty degrees I ran back to my room and wrapped my body in a thin, gray sweater.

"Alright I'm ready!" I announced happily. Xi Fang looked at my outfit with a look of dismay spread on her face. She rearranged a loose piece of hair on my face to the back of my ear.

"Seriously girl, can't you at least TRY to look good?"

"You gave me five minutes to change," I groaned.

"Alright, get in the car. I'll be there in a little while with my makeup bag," said Xi Fang.

I raced to the car and took out a granola bar from my bag. There was no sound in the car except for the crunches of the granola as I munched on it hungrily. I started tapping my fingers on the dashboard as I waited for my roommate. I saw her petite figure rush out the door with her makeup bag and sighed as the bag slipped from her soft grasp and all the contents in it fell all over the ground. As I got out to help her, I heard a sports car with loud music heading towards us.
