[Welcome master. I am your gacha system.]
An extremely monotone voice sounded in Matt's head. Just from the tone alone, he concluded the system would probably be lacking in personality.
[Would you like a tutorial and explanation of my functions, master?]
(Yes, please.)
[Understood. The system currently has four functions available. They are status, inventory, missions, and gacha. More functions may be opened in the future should you draw them in the gacha. Which function would you like to learn about first?]
As someone who had read web and light novels and had played various mobile games, all of the functions mentioned were relatively familiar to Matt. That being said, he couldn't deny that with Chaos's personality that there may be new quirks present.
(Status.)
As soon as he thought that, a status screen appeared in his mind.

Matt stared at the nearly empty status and couldn't help but ask, (Is that it? Don't I get to see my level or stats like strength or intelligence?)
[Lord Chaos predicted you would be concerned about this and so left me with an explanation. He regards having such specific knowledge to be a weakness. For argument's sake, assume the average lower-class devil possesses a strength of 45 while yours is at 70. In melee combat, in this scenario, with such a vast difference in strength, you would likely take the battle less seriously. However, by not taking it seriously, you would be less likely to learn anything from combat. Likewise, if you know you have far weaker stats than your opponent, you would flee from battle and thus avoid situations that would push your limits.]
[My Lord was even hesitant to give you an HP and MP indicator, but eventually relented. An HP indicator will be a decent indicator of overall physical strength while MP will broadly inform you of magical strength. Furthermore, certain amounts of MP are necessary to engage summons and specific items, so it is expedient for you to know how much MP you have available.]
[In regards to character levels and leveling, Lord Chaos was firmly against it. Levels themselves are too arbitrary as the same leveled individuals may possess vastly different combat abilities due to their skills and training. In addition, being able to level up by gaining experience through various actions is too much of a cheat considering you already have a gacha.]
[Conversely, Lord Chaos felt fine allowing equipment and skill details to be displayed as he views those details as more of an issue of management. For equipment, it makes it to min-max according to what you believe you will need in an upcoming battle. For skills, knowing their information and levels will assist in training and strategy and tactical planning. Though such knowledge can interfere with your attitude during battles, Lord Chaos felt the benefits outweighed the costs.]
[Finally, He left a message in case you have any complaints. He said, "Shut up and stop being a pussy." Any questions, master?]
For a moment, Matt's mind blanked out at the info dump and Chaos's last message. As a law student, he was amazed at how many logical fallacies were present in a god's reasoning. To be fair, there was certainly logic to his argument, but it still had plenty of flaws.
In the end, he could only shrug it off and laugh, figuring Chaos probably just got too lazy to configure a system that calculated levels and stats.
Regardless, Matt wouldn't be too greedy. Having been raised an orphan, he was already hugely indebted to Chaos and would be happy with what he was given.
(I understand. System, please show and tell me about the inventory function.)
[Yes, master.]
The status screen vanished and in its place was a screen with a seemingly endless number of slots, all of which were empty. Matt was surprised at how much available space there was as most games he played limited the inventory space and you had to pay to unlock more slots.
[The inventory is a place to store the gacha items you receive. Each unique item will occupy its own space, but exact duplicates can be stacked. Things that do not directly derive from the gacha may not be placed here. You may also organize your items in any way you wish, including creating tabs for different categories.]
(Is there a limit to the number of slots?)
[As the human imagination is practically infinite, so too are the various things obtainable through the gacha. The inventory mirrors this fact by guaranteeing space for all items drawn.]
(You said that only gacha items could be placed in the inventory. However, if I obtain a storage device from the gacha and fill it with non-gacha items, can it still be placed in the inventory?)
[That is acceptable.]
Matt smiled. While he couldn't put anything he wanted into the inventory, he was sure that – though they were probably rarer gachas – he would eventually get storage devices. Then he'd never have to worry about space again.
That being said, he still wanted to try his hand at learning space laws and the corresponding magic.
(Next, please explain about missions.)
[Understood.]
The inventory screen disappeared and was replaced with a nearly empty white screen. It only had the header: Missions.
(I'm assuming no mission are currently available?)
[Incorrect. Missions will never be available unless you ask for them.]
Matt scrunched up his brow in confusion. (Explain.)
[According to Lord Chaos, in your previous life you never really experienced what it is to live. He chose you to reincarnate largely due to this. Therefore, he felt it would be counterproductive to simply hand you missions on a silver platter. Doing so would make you live your life according to the system's, and by extension Lord Chaos's, expectations. As such, all available missions will be hidden. When you accomplish one, the system will notify you and deliver your rewards. A record of completed missions will be shown on this screen. If you fail to complete a hidden mission, you will never be notified.]
[There is an exception to this, however. If you desire a mission, you may ask the system and you will be shown a random mission. This mission, unlike hidden ones, will have a steep penalty attached to it in the case of failure.]
[All rewards are in the form of premium gacha tickets and, for extremely difficult mission, various special premium tickets.]
[Since you have just reincarnated, Lord Chaos has instructed me to show you one mission with the penalty waived.]
On the screen in front of him, the black words detailing the mission appeared.
----------
Mission: Reach a magical capacity of 500 before your birth.
Description: Many items from the gacha will require a certain magical threshold. Devils are also heavily reliant upon magical capabilities. You have nothing else to do in the womb, so you might as well increase your magic.
Reward: 3 premium gacha tickets
Penalty (waived): Abilities related to energy sensing, control, and gathering are all weakened by 50% for the next year.
----------
Matt read through the mission details calmly until he reached the penalty. (Damn! Isn't that penalty way to severe?!)
[This is to dissuade you from ever asking for a mission. Live your own life.]
He agreed with that principle, but still…
(Is the penalty related to the difficulty of the mission?)
[Yes. As this mission is ranked low in difficulty, the penalty is also light. Should you fail a top-tier mission the penalty will be…devastating.]
Matt could swear the system's voice became sinister at that last word. He gulped. When he thought about how asking for a mission would generate one at random, he developed an immediate sense of fear towards the mission function. He swore he would never ask for a mission unless there was no other choice.
[Any further questions about missions, master?]
The system's voice broke him out of his thoughts. (No.)
[Then I will proceed to explain about the gacha.]
He smiled. A shiver of excitement ran up his spine and his fingers practically itched in anticipation. Gacha, that blessed hell.
There were three sections in the new screen, each more colorful than the next. They were the ordinary, premium, and special gachas.
[As you may be familiar with, what can be obtained is separated into varying rarities. They are common, uncommon, rare, super rare, special super rare, and chaotic rare.]
Bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond, and crimson colors flashed on the screen to correspond to their respective rarities.
Hearing the name of the highest rarity, Matt couldn't help but pause in thought. 'Chaotic rare' gave him a disturbing feeling and he wondered whether those items would be safe.
(Why the name 'chaotic rare?')
[Lord Chaos felt like naming it after himself.]
(That's it?)
[Yes.]
Matt did a metaphorical eye roll. (Fair enough. Continue.)
[Understood. The same items are available for both the ordinary and premium gachas, with only the draw rates being quite different. In the common gacha there is a 0.05% chance to draw a chaotic rare while that rises to 1% in the premium gacha.]
Matt groaned. A 0.05% chance! That's a 1 out of 2000 chance to draw it!
But even still, that wouldn't stop him from obtaining all the common gacha tickets he could. Even if it took 2000 tries, it would all be worth the time and effort for that crimson color to flash on the screen…especially if chaotic rare items were as amazing as he hoped.
[As you already know, premium tickets are obtained through completing missions. However, you may also obtain them through combat and killing your opponents. Individuals on par with a low-class devil will award ½ a ticket, on par with a middle-class devil will award 1 ticket, on par with a high-class devil will award 3 tickets, and someone on par with an ultimate-class devil will award 10 tickets. Any individuals who are extremely powerful – like gods, devil kings, or Ophis – will award tickets upon a circumstantial basis, and may even warrant being given a special ticket. Individuals weaker than a low-class devil will award nothing.]
[Ordinary gacha tickets are obtained via material conversion. Money may be traded in at a rate of $10,000 for every ticket. Likewise, so long as a material is not from a gacha, it may be traded into the system and its monetary worth will go towards ordinary tickets.]
Matt was mentally sweating. He had never actually seen $10,000 in cash. He'd never even had so much as half that in his bank accounts despite all his scholarship money. Sure, the Gremory's may be rich, but he doubted he could just ask them for many tens of thousands of dollars.
(And the special gacha?)
[That's all determined by Lord Chaos's whim. Not even I know when special draws will occur nor what rates and items they will entail. Even the methods to obtain tickets are based on his whim.]
[As you may have noticed on your status screen, Lord Chaos has given you 10 Super Special Newcomer tickets to start out with. Though, considering all gacha will give you an extra draw if you turn in 10 tickets at once, the Lord has basically blessed you with 11 draws.]
Matt was happy to hear there were rewards for turning in multiple tickets at once. Now the only question was whether he had the willpower to consistently keep his tickets until he had 10 to turn in.
(What does this Super Special Newcomer gacha consist of?)
[There is no special theme or type of item being promoted. The rates of the rarer draws are simply raised significantly and you are guaranteed to not draw any common gachas.]
[Would you like to use your available tickets?]
Hearing that question, Matt's available facial muscles attempted to form a wide smile. He was excited to begin this journey. Excited, yet anxious to see what he would get. Nervous to jump down the gacha rabbit hole.
(Do it.)
Sorry about the huge info drop. Boring but necessary...and best just to get it out of the way.
Will try to get another chapter out tonight. Depending on what its word count gets to, the story should start picking up some speed.
