Chapter 4: Who is the fairy

The mist glided backward. Albina was sitting on the ground, her eyes were staring at nothing, her face was expressionless, and tears were falling from her eyes and down her pale cheeks.

Some invisible hands hugged her, pressed her head to the transparent a little luminescent chest; and the girl burst out sobbing. This invisible someone still continuing to rock the girl started singing. At first quietly, then the voice became louder and higher, piercing the air and spreading for kilometers around. It was a woman's voice, beautiful and sad. The song was in English, it was a folk motive, but not very much Russian. The melody was soothing and resembled a lullaby.

Little by little and half by half

I don't want to see them bluff

Little by little and half by half

I don't want to see them laugh

Laugh at you and laugh at me

Tir-lee-tir-lee-tir-lee-dee

Laugh at me and laugh at you

I know so wonderful a tune

Transparent figure was still holding the girl, and the girl's sobbing started to quiet down.

Once it's taken nothing's left

I can't deal with such a theft

Once it's broken, nothing's whole

In the soul appears a hole

Hole in you and hole in me

Tir-lee-tir-lee-tir-lee-dee

Hole in me and hole in you

I know so wonderful a tune

Albina still sobbed now and then, but was already coming to her senses breathing in a familiar scent of the mist with which she played so often. Only now she knew how nice was that scent of the mist and of the forest fairy, who maybe even saved her life today. The fact that it was this fairy who threatened her life never came to her mind.

Wings to fly and legs to walk

We are here for them to gawk

Freak like you and freak like me

Tir-lee-tir-lee-tir-lee-dee

Tir-lee-tir-lee-tir-lee-dee

The song finished and the girl lifted her head trying to look in her fairy's eyes, but could not see them. Without losing her confidence that it was not a dream, she asked, "It was you who have been talking to me all this time, wasn't it? I didn't go crazy, right?"

"Of course you are not crazy. But I did not speak to you out loud," the fairy answered.

"How? Is it so?"

"I felt you…"

"Felt?"

"Yes, somewhere deep in my soul."

"You saved me today, you know," the girl said.

"I almost killed you today, child."

"No! You almost killed them. Me - you saved…"

Silence descended upon them. The invisible figure continued rocking the girl in her arms, and Albina felt that the fairy was in deep thought.

"What are you thinking about all the time?" Albina asked.

"All the time?"

"Yes…"

"About different things."

"And now?"

"Now I think how you can get home safely."

"Home?! I do not want to go home! At home there will my mother… and them…"

The girl tensed and her eyes watered again, they were full of fear. She shook her head silently trying to shake away all the visions which flooded her mind now, especially the scene with the boys, and the future scenes which were yet to happen.

"They won't touch you anymore. Today I was a bit too hard on them. I maybe could even regret it..." the fairy said as if reading the girls mind.

"I do not feel sorry for them!"

"They also do not feel sorry for you…"

Albina wanted to retort but a different more exciting thought came to her mind.

"What was that song about?" Albina asked.

"Oh darling, it was about us, me and you…"

"I decided I will stay here and live with you now!" the girl was full of determination.

"Hush, no need…You have a home, a family, you even had friends. I do have neither home, nor family, nor friends… I have nothing to offer you."

"I could be your family! My mother hates me now. They all hate me…"

"Do not say that."

"But it is true! They all hate me now! But I hate them even more!!!"

"You are a human. And you should stay one, and live with your people. I am a bad company for you…"

"You are a better company than they are! You are kinder… You are a good forest fairy!.."

The "fairy" laughed bitterly.

"Do I really seem to you like a good fairy? Do I seem to be a fairy at all?!"

"Yes, you seem to be."

"But I am no fairy…"

"Then who are you," the child asked in surprise.

"I do not know," the voice answered quietly.

"Oh, but I know! All children… well, almost all children resemble their parents. What are your parents like?"

"My parents are like your parents."

"Then you must be a human too?"

"No…"

The girl frowned.

"I do not know, who I am. I am alone now…" the voice continued.

"No, you are not alone!" the girl hugged the "fairy" and refused to let go.

"But I am the only one, you know, like this…"

"Am I not going to be like you?" the girl asked with hope in her voice.

"You?.. I am afraid you are already too much like me. Too early…"

"Then I will also become a fairy someday!"

The girl's voice was full of happiness, and this happiness seeped into the soul of the invisible woman as well. Suddenly the air around them was disturbed as if by some unperceivable waves and the mist started to grow thicker. The "fairy" sighed deeply, concentrated and the invisible ties in the air weakened.

"Will I also become invisible? Will my body disappear?" the girl asked.

"I am not invisible…"

"But I do not see you!" Albina thought again that maybe she was going crazy after all.

"Because I do not want to be seen."

"But this is not fair! I want to be able to see you!"

The fairy was silent.

"Please!.." Albina insisted.

Again silence.

"Just this once…" the girl did not give up.

The breathing of the "fairy" became even, but loud, shiny dust specks started to fly away from her body and drift to her spine. Her figure started to take shape, and the dust formed luminescent half-transparent wings behind her back. For a moment when the woman was already visible and the wings were still bright, she really resembled a forest fairy. Then the swings slowly disappeared into her back and the mist around them became much thinner. Advancing darkness almost covered Albina's eyes. But she still was able to see each line on the face of her savior and had no doubt in the woman's magical origin.

The woman was Liza. Her face was delicate and covered in tiny freckles, her eyes were green, her hair was "kissed by the sun", she was not completely a redhead, but there was a reddish tint to hair anyway.

"I always knew!" the girl cried out.

"Knew what?"

"That you are real!"

"Don't you dare telling anyone else about it! Do not even think about doing it. Today I could help you, but tomorrow I might not be around. Those boys won't touch you now, and nobody will believe their story anyway. But it is not cruel kids you should beware in your life, but narrow-minded adults instead!" Liza said.

"Narrow-minded?"

"Yes. It means, Albina, that kids can still learn, but adults think that they already know all the truths and they refuse to change. Children can believe, but adults most of the time can only put the blame on you. They do not see beyond their nose, and if they see, they just refuse to admit it; they find thousands of excuses and ways to put the blame on anyone else but themselves. They always find someone to blame… And today it is you…"

"But I haven't done anything!" the girl cried out.

"I know, I know… But for them it does not matter whether you did something or not, they just need to find someone to blame, and it happens so that you cannot defend yourself."

"But I can!.. You can…" the girl argued.

"The way I can protect you, makes me even worse than they are…"

"No one can be worse than they are!.."

"Hush… hush… I will stay with you, but it is time to sleep. I will keep you warm."

"But I do not want to sleep."

But Liza already did not listen, she started singing the lullaby again, and Albina's eyelids started to grow heavy.

"Please wait! What was your name?" the girl asked through sleep.

"Was?" Liza was a little surprised.

"Yes, was… When you were like me…"

"Aa… that's what you mean… Liza, I think…"

"You think?"

"Yes, I do not remember my previous life very well."

"Can I call you Lys instead?" the girl asked.

"Yes, you can. Now sleep…"

And the lullaby started again…

Everything will be all right

Let's live through this very night

Let's go further never back

We just have a different track

Track for me and track for you

I know so wonderful a tune

Track for you and track for me

Tir-lee-tir-lee-tir-lee-dee

Tir-lee-tir-lee-tir-lee-dee

18/11/09

This night signing did not stop at all for the first time; it gave the girl a calm and deep sleep, but terrified the villagers.
