Chapter 2: The Ruins II

And so the charade began.

Chara closed them self off from Frisk, but Chara's presence never left the poor child. Chara observed in silence as Asriel was shooed by Tori--...Mother. The reflection of Chara before mother was heartbreaking. When Chara was first brought back by Frisk's determination, Chara was perplexed by their very own existence. Remembering when their last breathe was robbed by humanity itself. Oh how Chara silently grieved and envied to feel the warmth of their mother. Seeing Frisk embrace mother's lower half made their heart sink.

Chara quickly turned their head. Listening as the two conversed with one another. It was then time to continue onward with their predicted routine of the maze-filled ruins. Oh how mother loved her puzzles. It actrually brought a weak smile to their face. "Mom...." the child whispered on their breathe. Of course, Frisk would hear the sincere voice of Chara, but their shadowy body would be no where in sight.

Chara kept quiet as everything took place. Sparing the monsters as mother commanded, leaving them to wondering the ruins on their own so she could prepare the pie. As they finally arrived to their destination of mother's new home, Chara looked up at the scarlet red leaves on the tree while Frisk managed their save point. Chara's body became visible as they were lost in thought. When Frisk was finished with there save point, their determination dragged Chara with Frisk as they faded to nothing once more.

"Home..."

Chara's body appeared once more, but not as monster. Chara was reverted back to looking like their former self. Of course, Chara had more of a male appearance compared to Frisk. Taller by a few inches, but in the face, they had facial features of a young girl. At this state, Chara was calm. Hatred didn't linger the poor child, it was relieving to see and explore the halls with Frisk. Watching as Frisk enjoyed the strong aroma of the cinnamon-butterscotch pie. Oh how the memories flooded back to Chara as their eyes lowered.

Asriel, Mom and Dad. Their life was just fine the way it was. But...

The thoughts of Dad and Mom talking about the surface angered Chara. But they quickly looked up to see Toriel's smile towards Frisk and they were quickly relieved of the heartache.

Chara pushed their feet from the ground and was not levitation inches behind Frisk. Lingering through Frisk's thoughts as they collapsed onto the bed. "So how long do you plan to keep up the charade? I see you haven't lost your touch on playing the innocent child to mother...." the hatred began to brew as Chara refreshed Frisk's memories, "After all, it was you who killed her. Ahahah! Gees. They might have forgotten...But that look on mother's face when you struck her.." Chara lowered their head, body trembling in anger to the thought of how her death quickly made hast. If anything, that kill was the worst for Chara. It's as if Chara wanted some hope Frisk wouldn't take her life again, but that would defeat the purpose. Chara wanted to live; envious of Frisk's determination.

Chara's feet placed back on the ground as they walked towards a pile of toys where a toy knife could be seen. Chara's snickering look faded into a frown.

The brief words which had been shared by Chara, whether intentional or not, made Frisk think there was a bit more hope for their little partner. Since Chara had appeared once more and began talking about how they were just going about with a charade, Frisk ignored most of the words which left the young androgynous kid whom wore green as opposed to Frisk's better choice of color scheme. Well, up until they said something about mothers death, Frisk turned their head to watch as the genocidal idiot walked over to the pile of toys. In a way, Frisk pitied Chara. They had everything and lost everything to eating a flower.

"When we struck her," The soft spoken Frisk said to correct Chara and opened their eyes partially to look at the ceiling a bit clearer; revealing their chocolate hazel brown eyes. "My only question is... Why didn't Flowey run? Why did he destroy Asgore? If he didn't go about doing that, we would have been kept busy and away from him..." Frisk's eyes moved towards Chara as they were looking at the pile of toys where a toy knife was. This was obviously Chara's room and Chara, looking at the toy, wasn't so happy. "Why'd you kill your best friend? Why'd you kill me?"

Frisk sat up on the bed and crossed their legs; looking at their hands as if they had just painted their nails. Would there be a way to save Chara as well? Well, Chara was dead. Though their soul was intertwined with Frisks, so there should be a way to bring it back. The only problem was, Frisk had no idea how to go about doing that, but Alphys might. Frisk concealed this thought with many others and closed their eyes once more.

Toriel on the other hand would have left the pie in the kitchen before sitting next to the fire and began reading. Slowly rocking in the chair. Reminiscing in the past when Chara and Asriel played together, where Asgore didn't want to go to war with the Humans or break the barrier. Sure they were confined to the underground, but they had everything they wanted... Until Asriel took Chara's soul and went to the surface, only to come back and spread his own dust on the flower bed. Letting out a soft sigh, the goat peered over at the fire and closed her eyes; slowly falling asleep.

The frown upon Chara's face changed into a wicked smile. "How sad..." Chara turned to face Frisk. Amazed at how the child tried to place the motive onto Chara. "Don't confuse me for your silly decisi--" Chara was interrupted with Frisk's outspoken thoughts about Asriel. While listening to Frisks words, Chara's terrifying smile shifted into their teeth gritting together. "You know nothing..." Chara concluded. Frisk wouldn't understand the bond that Chara shared with Asriel.

When Chara wanted the subject to change, it linger on their mind. After all, what else could the pair do in this time? Sit in silence? No, Chara would grow board staying silent in their own thoughts. "However.." Chara rephrased. "Since I'm stuck with you...I suppose it's best I tell you a little bit about myself."

Chara's hatred in the form of black liquid began to cease. The child's stare staying keen on Frisk. "You see Frisk, I am nothing but an entity of what use to be myself. Your determination is so strong....it brought back only part of me from the dead." Chara turned their body to face Frisk. Taking only a few steps towards the bed as they crossed their hands over their chest to continue their story. "I'm not at peace. And I was lost to the darkness until you fell down to the underground. Of course, I was just as confused as you. I didn't understand why I was even here, but in the meantime...I watched you. I watched you in silence so I could venture with you on this journey. Chara paused. Reverting their eyes away as they allowed a weak smile to purse their lips. " Of course, I didnt know the flower was Asriel at first. But when I saw mom, I was filled with joy. I only wished to stay with her, but the little fragments of my past started to reanimate. I remembered what happened to me and Asriel when we were one. And you, for some reason thought it was 'right' to fight her..

Chara's eyes narrowed into a glare towards Frisk. "And then the killing escalated..You didnt stop. All I could do was watch as everyone was being slain without mercy. So, you created me. Each speck of LOVE made was a rage infesting in me, Frisk. So.." Chara eased in towards Frisk and a conniving smile stretched upon Chara's face. "You should be asking yourself...Why did you kill everyone anyone? Why did you start this genocidal route? And when you wanted to let Flow-- no. Asriel live...Ahehehe...Did you really think I was going to let you get off that easy? You made me suffer, Frisk. You brought this upon your self for who and what I am. But now, you want me to believe you want to start fresh?! I-...I didn't want to kill him! You started something and I was only finishing it! It was too late to bail out. And--....I didnt know he would show back up..You spared him! I assumed he would leave! But..." Chara was getting emotionally stressed. Quickly placing their hands upon their head to soothe the migraine. Trying to suppress their feelings of the past timeline that took place. Once Chara calmed down, they were back to their mellow nonchalant persona and continued. "If he never came back, I wouldn't have killed him, Frisk. But he didn't want to be alone. For some reason, when I had full control and I appeared as you...He knew it was me."

Chara remembered the last words Asriel spoke, "Chara? Is that you?", "See! I can be helpful. I didn't betray you.", "Please! Please don't kill me!"

"That cry baby..heh." referring to Asriel, Chara snickered to the thought and then looked back up to Frisk. "While you were enjoying your little massacre, giving yourself more LOVE and me more HATE..I decided to look into your little determination abilities. That fight with Sans explained a lot to me..heh! We have the power to control this world. We're invisible, Frisk! So I knew from that moment, we are above consequences. I don't know how...or why, but I knew if we restarted this world, the lives of everyone would come back! Just like how we always came back! So you see..I knew there was no real 'harm' done. And honestly, I didn't expect them to forget either. So this is another plus to our advantage."

As soon as Chara responded with the 'How sad...' Frisk's eyes widened even more than before as they opened, clearly wearing a cringing face of guilt as he began to say that it was all Frisk's fault. That they didn't stop the killing. That they were at fault for all of it. They could have stopped, they could have spared everyone to start with. They could have lived happily with everyone or brought them to the surface. Instead they lead to an inevitable disastrous ending where they would have been all alone. Like a broken cog in a machine, their head turned away from Chara as Chara turned their body to face Frisk.

They were working with only a fragment of Chara, so they said and it was Frisk whom filled them with all this hatred. Tears welled up on the ducts of Frisk's eyes as they stared at their shadow on the wall. The innocent little Frisk used Chara as an out lit, a scapegoat. What have they done? Why did Frisk have to believe themselves innocent to the atrocity that they alone committed.

Their body felt heavy, their chest hurt, their eyes began to sting. Closing their eyes Frisk would bring their knees to their chest and wrap their arms around it. The kid looked to Chara, or at least faced them with their eyes as they usually are. "I'm sorry," Frisk said quietly, taking in an inhale clogged by mucus as if they were coming down with a cold. Frisk's apology had truth to it, at least in a sense that they would never do that again. How could they bring themselves to massacre everyone all over again? The thought of going back to the surface weren't all that good. People who traveled to the Mountain never came back, that was the whole reason why they came. They didn't expect to fall down a hole, and what was the reason to go back up in the first place? Was it because, they were afraid?

The way Chara said that they were above consequences, Frisk couldn't agree. There were consequences for everything, whether you felt or saw them right away. The ultimate consequence of their actions brought hate into Chara, scarring across Frisks mind, not being able to see anything the same way again. "We'll... Fix the timeline. It's why we reset it... Why I wanted to reset it." Frisk swallowed hard, "I'll fix you. I'll fix Asriel..." Frisk was being selfish obviously and even knew they'd never forget what they've done, neither of them would forget. Squeezing their eyes closed to remove the rest of the tears which have overrun their eye lids.

Slowly getting up from the bed slowly, their legs and arms moving slowly, Frisk would walk to the door and shakily grip the nob and pull it open with a slow creaking sound. Frisk would then quietly leave the room and begin to quickly walk along the floor with their shoes in hand. They could hear mother sleeping in the other room, but Frisk remembered everytime they tried to go, she would stop them. Frisk decided, they weren't going to stop for Toriel this time.

The human began to quietly walk down the stairs, surprisingly without a sound, however as soon as the kid reached the bottom, the snoring stopped. "Tch~" Frisk quickly slid on their shoes and began to run down the hall, they weren't repeating the same thing again. Avoid fighting Toriel, that was the whole plan there. However, just as they were about to turn the corner the sound of the Goat running after them could be heard.

MY CHILD! DON'T GO! ASGORE WILL KILL YOU– Her arm was out stretched with her fingers so close to the child's shirt, but Frisk lunged out of her grasp last moment, some tears making contact with the surface of Toriels tunic who slowly came to a stop. Staring at the droplets, "Huh...? Tears?" She made a inquisitive expression as she identified the dampness on her tunic before looking back to Frisk whom was closing in on the doors to leave. She was too late to stop her child... Again.

That's when Frisk stopped several feet from the door and glanced over their shoulder, wearing a small smile with their normal expressionless closed eyes. "Mom, I'll be fine. I'll come back... Keep that pie ready for us, kay?" Toriel raised a brow at the ending, who was us? With that, Frisk slipped through the door just as Toriel was about to start running after them again.

Chapter 3: Comedian Sans

Just as Chara thought they got through to Frisk, the unexpected happened. Just as Frisk turned to face Chara, the sight of tears stream down their face alerted Chara. eye lids widening to the voice of Frisk apologizing. struck Chara deeply. This feeling, the feeling of their determination was rising. Frisk was motivated by something and Chara could feel it. Taking another step back, Chara narrowed their eyes awaiting for Frisk to explain them self. It was then noted Frisk was determined to fix things. Put things back in place for the first child to fall and Asriel.

Chara crimson red eyes were stars-trucked upon looking at Frisk. Chara...was lost for words. Chara quickly grasped tightly on to their sweater just against their chest. What use to be a heart-filled of life was now a black hole, but, Chara could remember how it use to feel. Remember how it use to feel to be alive. Suddenly, Chara was dragged with Frisk in their moment of thoughts to only witness Frisk attempting to escape in secrecy. Just as Chara had full hope they would actually get by unnoticed, the snores of mother stopped. Just like Frisk, Chara smacked their lips in detest and quickly faded to nothing so Frisk wouldn't have any distractions on their run.

They were so close; with Frisk's shoes on they were drawing much closer to the gate, but just behind them, the cries of mother yelling for Frisk to stay, pained Chara. "This feeling.." Chara appeared once more as Frisk stopped before the gate to give their farewell to mother. Frisk's words carry heavy upon Chara as they stated us. Chara grasped their chest once more and lowered their head. Quickly peeking behind them self to see Toriel with a puzzled look, Chara would want anything to be able to embrace mother once more. But just as she was about to come after them, Frisk successful passed through the doors. As the doors closed behind Frisk, Chara faded to nothing just before Toriel collapsed in agony and sorrow to Frisk's departure. Chara looked down to Toriel with such a sincere look of depression, and then faded to nothing as Frisk's determination was pulling Chara with them.

Just as the two continue onward, in front of their path Flowey could be seen looking down in contemplation to their self. But was suddenly startled by the sight of Frisk drawing closer. Oh how he was irritated by the human's presence. "Oh look who decides to show up. I bet you think you're soooo cleaver. Okay, you bested me with the help of another. And by the looks of things.." Flowey paused to glimpse at Frisk's status. "You didnt even kill a single monster. Tsk. No matter. Let's see how you'll get by against relentless killers out there. Such folly attempts. You'll die and your soul will be mine for the taking! After all, I am the prince of this world's future. So I'll watch you fail..Just know I'm always watching! " Flowey quickly sunk into the patch of grass without giving Frisk a chance to stop or even converse.

Frisk continued to run as they got out the doors and past the opening of the gate. Though as soon as they noticed the contemplating fiend with yellow petals, Frisk would have slowed down to a stop and just watch the half of Asriel curse him, saying they'll take their soul and they'll be the prince of the world's future. "Two peas in a pod, huh.." Frisk could only giggled a bit but it sound eerily more like crying than a giggle. They then continued on their way as the path they took would be surrounded by trees and snow. The child's eyes watched the snow, the trees which towered high above them, and the single branch which laid in their way.

This feeling, they were being watched and the human knew exactly who it was. The friendly comedian, the cheeky bag of bones, the most interesting and weakest of monsters whom is much too underestimated. He killed me over and over again, even when I tried to give up... That won't happen again, Moving forward slowly, since Flowey didn't bother staying to chat, the human continued on their way.

Reaching down, they would pick up a handful of snow and begin to pack it together in their hands until it was a solid ball. From there, the kid would toss it into the air, catch it in the same hand before repeating the action as they walked. It wasn't a weapon obviously, unless there was a monster whom was weak to the cold; if there was, they shouldn't be in an area surrounded by snow. "You know... I never thought of this before, but why didn't I take a coat from mother's house? We never looked in the drawers and is really cold out here." Frisk admitted before licking the clean snow ball slightly with the tip of their tongue.

That's when the made it to the half-ass barricade which was suppose to stop anyone from going further, but the bars were much too wide. Frisk just stared at the bridge for a few moments, their body feeling heavy again as they knew whom was going to come up next. Their lip quivering for a few moments before it held steady and turned around before someone anyone other than Chara were to speak.

The morning came and Papyrus was already starting for the kitchen as he opened his bedroom door stretching, "NYEH HEH! Another day means another chance a human might fall to the underground! Come Sans! I shall prepar--..Hm?" Papyrus looked over the rail to see Sans was not on the couch. Instead, he heard a strange muffle of noises coming from his bedroom. "Sans?" He called for his brother. Grasping the door knob, he opened it to see his dear brother tossing and turning in his sleep. Papyrus quickly approached Sans as he hovered over the bed, quickly shaking his sweating brother who was refusing to wake up. "SANS! Please, brother! Wake up!" he hollered repeatedly.

Sans on the other hand, he was suffering in this horrible nightmare. Sans was commencing into battle for the three hundredth time in judgement hall of the kingdom. He was so exhausted. He could barely keep up. Each round tiring him out in attempt to hold the human back. "Why?! He even spared you! You murderer...Yo- you dirty brother killer.." He hollered out to the shadowy image of the human who charging in on him. Sans quickly defended himself with a pile of bones shooting from the ground as the human dodged it with ease. Just as the human swung it's blade at Sans, he quickly vanished [*miss]. Reappearing just above the human in mid-air as he used his Gaster Blaster to hurl magic at the human. The child dodged. It was then returned to close range melee between the two as Sans landed on both his slippers onto the gold tile floors.

Papyrus was frightened. He didnt know what to do for his brother who was trapped in his own sleep. Quickly he dashed to the upstairs bathroom. In the mean time, Sans was still struggling in his sleep. Only this time, it was more violent where his left eye's blue magic was seeping out from under his closed lid. Papyrus quickly ran back to Sans' room with a pale of water. Without hesitation, he tossed the water onto Sans.

Just as the cold water made impact to Sans body, in his dream, the human successfully landed a single blow to Sans' lower rib cage. Sans woke up as the blue eye erupted as he quickly jumped up in attack stance. Bone levitated just in front of Sans only inches away from Payprus Skull. "S-Sans.."

Sans quickly snapped out. Quickly casting the bones from defense from Papyrus as his eyes shifted around the room in confusion. He then looked back to Papyrus. "P-Papyrus?" He asked in reassurance. Was this real?! He was-- But Papyrus was, how is he here? Where did the hu-- Sans was lost from continuing his jumbled thoughts as Papyrus quickly launched forward and hugged Sans. Sans heart raced, tears already starting to form in the corner of his eye sockets as he quickly embraced Papyrus.

Hours took place and Sans explained to Papyrus that it was just a nightmare. Nothing to worry about (so he thought). Once Papyrus accepted his answer, he prepared bowls of cereal for breakfast. Once they were filled, Papyrus was back to his normal energetic self as he rushed to his room to get changed into his battle suit. Sans would do the same....only, not into a battle suit. His normal attire as he left the white shirt he had on and covered it with his zipper blue hoodie. He then walked down the stairs patiently following after Papyrus who was already running out the door. Right next to the door, Sans brought himself to the rows of shoes. Only to slip his socked skeleton feet into his pink slippers. Sans walked out the doorway and smiled at Papyrus as he was waving his hand for Sans to catch up.

"Come on you lazy bones! We have to get to our post!" Papyrus hollered back to Sans. Sans on the other hand chuckled and responded, "Yeah, yeah. No worries, bro. I'll 'ketchup' in no time~" Sans jokingly pulled out a bottle of ketchup from his pocket and rattled it at him teasingly.

"Oh. My. God, Sans. I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that! Now come on!"

[ Time Skip ]

The two brothers continued to the normal daily posts. Papyrus decided to leave Sans alone so he could explore the area near north. As for Sans, he was already beginning to doze off, but quickly woke up to hearing Papyrus hollering from the distance at him. Sans sighed before he gave Papyrus a cheeky shrug. But Sans knew how important this was to Papyrus. and what better way to start off his morning with visiting that door to make some pun jokes with his mysteries friend. He quickly looked back where Papyrus was, and took note that he was in the clear. He quickly teleport-ed to the area of the door. But just as he did, the door quickly opened. His eye sockets widened as he quickly vanished once more. Only this time, into the woods nearby. He silently observed only to see a small hu-- no. A Kid? Suddenly, he had a case of deja vu. He knocked against his bone head with his knuckles. "Well..What do you know.." Sans was a bit confused, but he remembered looking at the date on the calendar...a human hasn't fallen to the underground in years, so why does he feel like...he's seen this kid before?

Chara found himself appearing just before Frisk was asking why they didn't bring a coat from mothers. Though, it never crossed Chara's mind to so, since they don't technically have a body to worry about it. Chara extended the arm up in attempts to catch a flake. Purposely know it would phase right past their grasp. "You know.." Chara brought their arms back to their side and looked to Frisk. "I never understood how it snowed down here. Heh." In attempts to sound friendly, but was still a little iffy about Frisk. They went through a whole route of being able to kill...and now they're showing remorse? Mercy? Was there a catch? Chara was confused. However, what was done, is done. This will be the only chance Chara will give Frisk. "Look. I know you're probably fixed on trying to save me and Asriel, but there's no chance for m--" just as Chara was going to explain the situation, someone was already approaching and engaging into battle for Frisk.

A few of the monsters from town decided to ventured out for a walk. Instead, the moment they caught sight of the human, the charged first into battle.

Sans quietly observed. "...Now this should be interesting." he spoke to himself. This way, he will know if the human is a treat, harmless...or just weak.

When Frisk had turned around, away from the bridge and towards where Sans was suppose to have appeared to greet them, they blinked slightly. Where was he? Listening to Chara's voice the kid would arch a brow and shrug, "Magic?" The kid would say in response to Chara's somewhat friendly attempt at conversation before opening their mouth hearing the green sweater wearing entity trying to tell them that there was no chance for them. That even though they didn't finish the sentence, made Frisk rather sad. Though it was true that Chara had absolutely no reason to believe that they could be brought back, Frisk would sigh, but keep a straight and expressionless face as the monsters came towards them.

The very fact that Sans hasn't appeared though, made Frisk conclude that they were watching from a distance. So there was no fighting that Frisk should do. Mother's strategy will work here, it should work. They will be spared, Frisk will live. The dancing Migosp, the cute little bug doesn't really ever do any damage. The only one whom is the problem would be the Vegetoid. Their pellets hurt. As they closed in on Frisk, they didn't flee, instead they brought up the three choices (Fight, Act and Mercy).

Quickly the child pressed act and proceeded to press "Dinner," a few seconds later the Vegetoid would state "Eat Your Greens~" Followed by the vegetoid firing a single green bullet into Frisk(whom didn't dodge), increasing their HP by one, before going back to twenty a few seconds later since it couldn't stay over max health.

After that the Miigosp would begin spawning several cockroach shaped entities across the bullet board, only for them to all miss as Frisk remained in the middle of the board. With a straight face, Frisk spared the Vegetoid at their turn and watched as the Migosp began to dance, "Swing your arms, baby~" Frisk just blinked a few times before beginning to to Dance like an Egyptian. Though after a few moments, Frisk selected Mercy and spared the dancing Monster.

Once that was done with, Frisk let out a sigh and bit into the snow ball which they had made prior before looking into the forest, as if looking for a presence which was spying on them. "Even then Chara," the human child would begin talking again to their partner, "If Asriel is able to be brought back after he died with your soul, who says your two parts won't reunite?" Frisk wasn't physically smiling, but they would be if they didn't want to seem a bit odd.
