Chapter 63: Generator Rex in DC

I wouldn't blame any of you if you didn't know who I am talking about today, it is a bit of an obscure series. But, I'll be introducing Rex Salazar to the DC universe, where he'll hopefully thrive. I'll start by explaining his powers to you and then move on to how he gets to his new home.

Let's talk about the origins of Rex's powers, which are nanites. If you know what a nanobot is, they are essentially the same, though the nanites from Rex's universe are in a league of their own. These machines are capable of curing most diseases and can end world hunger, when properly programmed. However, in their incomplete state, they lead to uncontrollable mutations, which leads to the creation of EVO's, the monsters of Rex's world. Rex, himself, is an EVO, albeit one who can control his nanites, due to them being the original batch and properly programmed. He was injected with these after an accident left him critically injured as a child. He was also later injected with the Omega-1 Nanite, which has a self-replication function, producing infinite amounts of nanites. Rex's nanites give him several unique abilities, such as technopathy and machine manifestation, as well as enhanced durability, strength, agility, reflexes, and a healing factor.

Originally, Rex had 6 different machines he could create with his powers: Smack Hands, Boogie Pack, Slam Cannon, Rex Ride, Punk Busters, and the B.F.S. It should be noted that all of the original builds are mainly orange in color. The Smack Hands are massive gauntlets that grant him incredible strength, allowing Rex to easily break through most materials, while also being extremely durable, protecting him from various attacks. The downside to these is that he can still feel pain, especially when they are destroyed. They also can function as drills, giving Rex more options. Rex is also capable of controlling the size, length, and flexibility of the Smack Hands freely.

The Boogie Pack, is a large jetpack, complete with a pair of wings. Its top speed is unknown, though it has traveled over 100 miles in a few minutes. The turbines can be launched at foes, as a bola, or at terrain to function as a grappling hook. It is also able to be used underwater, allowing Rex to operate in the ocean. Rex has also been shown creating compressed air with this machine. The downside to the Boogie Pack, is that it has a weight limit.

Next up is Rex's ranged build, the Slam Cannon. It takes the form of a massive cannon, which he rests on his shoulder similar to a rocket launcher. This build is unable to produce ammo using nanites, instead the maw on the back will grab any solid material and compress it into a projectile, which will be fired with great force. Generally what is grabbed is concrete and asphalt from the street beneath Rex's feet.

The Rex Ride is Rex's favorite form of transportation. It takes the form of a hoverbike, which also generates a helmet for Rex to wear. This bike is capable of speeds well over 200 MPH, which is used to great advantage by this build's hidden function. The hoverbike actually sports a ram in the front end, which increases the destructive potential of the machine greatly.

Next up, we'll talk about the Punk Busters, which are one of Rex's go to builds for combat. They are formed on his legs and take the appearance of gigantic mechanical boots with retractable spikes on the soles. These boots make Rex capable of jumping several stories into the air or across great distances. He has stated that getting kicked by these has the equivalent force of a freight train hitting you at full speed. The feet are also capable of extending to force enemies away.

The last of Rex's basic builds is the B.F.S. or the Big Fat Sword. It should be obvious what this build's appearance is, but if you need to know, it is a large blade which extends a distance from Rex's arm. It is quite sharp, easily cutting through various materials. Rex generally only uses this weapon when the situation is dire, as he can kill EVO's if he isn't careful. This sword also has the hidden function of a circular saw, as the top edge of the blade will split into two when he pulls the lever located at the base. The two blades will begin to spin rapidly, enhancing the cutting power of the weapon.

When he received the Omega-1 Nanite, he got access to five new builds: The Blast Caster, The Funchucks, The Bad Axes, the Block Party, and the Sky Slyder. These builds are more blue in color. The Blast Caster is a whip, with a generator attached to his back, capable of generating electrical shocks of varying degrees. The Funchucks are large nunchucks attached to his arms, which can create pulses of energy when spun fast enough, as well as diverting heat-seeking missiles, The Bad Axes are large axes with blades of plasma, capable of cutting even more than the B.F.S.

The Block Party and the Sky Slyder are the most unique constructs, in the fact that one is purely defensive, and the other has no other capabilities other than flight and speed. Block Party takes the form of two navy-blue gauntlets, which can generate two energy shields, which if correctly positioned can reflect projectiles. They can also be combined to create a dome which covers all of Rex. The Sky Slyder is a large hoverboard which is stated to be his fastest construct, though there is no known top speed for either it or the Boogie Pack.

Rex seems able to create new builds if he has access to blueprints or various pieces of technology. This ability could be utilized to create custom powers for the story. Say he gets his hands on a piece of Batman's tech, he'd be able to replicate it using his nanites. He also has access to a full EVO form, which takes the appearance of large biomechanical robot, one arm is the B.F.S. the other is a Smack Hand, his legs are Punk Busters, and mounted on both shoulders are Slam Cannons.

After his constructs, Rex's technopathy seems to have the most flexibility. It allows him to communicate with any machine mentally, which also seems to bypass any kind of security the machine might have. His technopathy seems to be able to grow stronger, as when the series first started he had trouble with communicating with more than one machine at a time, but later is shown able to control the entirety of a facility just to find a bomb. This ability also allows him to reprogram and instantly understand the function of a machine.

Let's move on to different ways Rex could make his way to the DC universe. I'll list three ways, each will be unique, for the most part. First, is Rex being given an opportunity by a godly being. In the final episode, Rex gains control of the five Meta-Nanites, which basically act like Infinity Stones, turning him into a God. He uses this power to cure every EVO on Earth, then pulls a Thanos, and deactivates them permanently, making them completely unusable. After this the story ends with him basically living out the rest of his life. But here's where we introduce a character to lead Rex to a new world. Basically, after these events, another God appears to Rex, asking why he would so easily give up Godhood. Rex answers that such power could not be allowed in any human's hands, earning the God's respect. The God then offers Rex the opportunity to help more people, which he accepts, transporting him to a new universe.

The second option is reincarnation, which has two possible branches. It starts off the same, with Rex at an advanced age, maybe a couple centuries old (My head canon is that the nanites would make him more resistant to the aging process, increasing his lifespan far beyond a normal human's). On his deathbed, he reminisces about his youth and the adventures he had, wishing that he could have changed his family's fate, or the fate of his friends. He takes his last breath and sinks into darkness, but it doesn't last long as he's suddenly thrust into a light, his eyes adjusting, he sees a hospital room. Now, here's where the story can change: Either he is reborn with his nanites in tow, or his family is a near exact replica of the last, and they are currently in the process of creating the nanites, which will be used to save Rex later. The difference is that the Nanite Event never happens as the only existing nanites were used to heal him. Later the research will lead to the creation of the Omega-1 Nanite which will again be used on Rex.

Last one is a pretty simple, another reincarnation, but this time it won't be Rex himself. Basically, a fan of the DC comics is killed(Hopefully in a creative way) and is sent to a God/Goddess of Reincarnation, and is given a wish. He wishes for the appearance and powers of Rex Salazar from Generator Rex.

The next problem is where to place the MC, which could change based on which of the three options you choose. So, the Rex that goes through a transmigration might end up as part of a team of younger heroes, like the Teen Titans or Young Justice. The Rex that is reborn with his memories would probably end up as either a solo hero or as a member of the Justice League. And the random reincarnator would probably be another solo hero, but I can see him teaming up with others from time to time.

And that's about it for this idea, it ended up being a lot longer than I thought it would, and I spent more time researching the character than I usually do.

This chapter took a lot of my creativity, and after next week, I'm going to take a small break, just to reinvigorate myself, it'll probably only be a week.
