Chapter 2: District 1

Shit. Shit. Shit!

Can't these people cause trouble somewhere OTHER than the intersection? How's a guy supposed to get to class on time when demons and Hunters make a mess down the only road I can take out of my district? So much for having a fresh start this semester. Everyone's going to know I'm a loser out of District 1. Just my luck.

Hooray. District 1. Numero uno. The number one. There's hardly anything glorious about it, though. The District system was "supposedly" implemented as a means to better organize field agents, researchers, and Hunters—for security, essentially. Anyone with a brain knows it's really about marginalization. Once upon a time, asshole governments or communities grouped people by status, income, race, whatever. Now, it's who's most likely to die from—you guessed it—traffic jams. Traffic jams caused by Hunter:Rogue Demon midnight rounds of Russian Roulette, that is. The state the started numbering with the highest risk zones first, of course.

Fun.

I sigh. Based on the diameter of this crater, and the magnitude of the damage, we'll likely have to shut down this particular block. These folks are going to be without power for a few days. Better than my end, at least. If this happened in my neighborhood, my roommates and I would be without power—and most importantly—internet for at least a week. Outages are the only reason me and my roommates have cards.

Now look. Some idiot behind me is incessantly honking. Doesn't he get that there's a HOLE in the middle of the road? I'm tempted to just get out and point at the giant crater. Idiots like him don't get it, though. Judging from his fancy-ish car, he's not even from this district. Lucky, ignorant bastard.

I could be driving one of those, too. I landed a lucky job in District 7 last month, but tardiness doesn't exactly scream "Reliable transportation" to an employer. It would have been a long drive, but worth it. District Lucky Number 7 (out of 20) had its own mess, so there was nothing really lucky about it—but the pay would have been good.

And I wouldn't have to deal with this constant honking every other week! Seriously! Does no one have eyes?

In my eyes, I think that District 1 has a lot of potential. It's a danger zone, but some Hunters love it. Apparently our streets make the chase "fun." In my eyes, it sure as hell makes late night ramen runs a lot safer. In my eyes, Hunters are crazy. In my eyes, her hair is amazing. No one is brave enough to dye their hair like that because of Rogue Demons. In my eyes, I'm distracted.

Hey, hormones. Cool it while I assess the situation. Thanks.

Ugh.

Stop honking!
