Chapter 79: Mama Bear

A few minutes after Raven was sent flying, the Branwen twins were currently lying on the ground infront of Magna and his mother. The brother-sister pair groaned in pain as Emily, Magna's mother, literally beat them black and blue.

Qrow, with tears streaming down his eyes, looked over at Emily and muttered, "…Why?"

Emily just rolled her eyes at Qrow as she scoffed, "You shouldn't have been such a smug asshole when I punched Raven. Just seeing your stupid grin made me want to punch you."

Silently crying about the world's injustice, Qrow huddled into a ball as his aura desperately tried to heal his wounds.

Through out their conversation, it was made apparent that Raven was unconscious. Magna didn't know if she was just unconscious or if she had a mild concussion but he opted to stay quiet.

June, on the other hand, was scared silent by Magna's mother. Failing to seeing the speed at which she moved and the power behind her fist, June wished to become invisible just so she doesn't accidentally trigger her.

Magna softly chuckled when he saw how June was acting as he lightly nudged her and whispered, "You'll be fine, June. My mother might be strong but she's just a mama bear protecting her cub."

He could see that June didn't believe him but she still decided to trust his words, slowly allowing herself to relax as her gaze changed from irrational fear to mild curiosity.

6 years ago, Magna had used the six path sun seal to heal his mother. What he didn't expect was that it was way more effective than he expected.

Her body used to be too weak, being completely unable to handle her semblance's ability to stack power, making it stop at a certain amount. When he healed her, he somehow managed to raise her natural limit.

Magna only realised this after a few months, when his mother accidental sent his father flying when he and Qrow got drunk.

He had literally ended up at the port. He had somehow been sent flying from Taiyang's house, which was inland, to the edge of the island. Luckily, the ocean managed to break his fall.

When she finally realised her strength, Emily ended up bursting into laughter as she went out and tested her new found strength.

For a week, no one had heard anything from Emily, worrying everyone but Taiyang, Qrow and Joshua. Then, on the eighth day, she showed up at the house with a wide smile.

She dragged everyone along a mysteriously new path before coming up to a very large wooden cabin/house. It seemed like something a professional architect designed as she happily introduced them to their new home.

Needless to say, Magna, Argo and Luna were dumbfounded. Emily had apparently worked with a local construction company to build the 2 storey, rustic style house.

She took part in everything, from heavy labour to architectural design. While Magna and the girls were in awe, Magna could hear his father quietly muttering, 'Not again…' meaning this wasn't the first time she's done something like this.

Magna later learned that construction has been a passion of his mother's for a long time. She did say that she helped with designing the building but at the time, Magna was too impressed to register her words.

Shaking his head, Magna smiled as he leapt at his mother and tightly hugged her, "It's good to see you again, mum."

Emily's face instantly softened as she affectionately returned Magna's hug, her strength seeming to return to a normal level as she hugged him tightly, "Oh, my baby boy! I missed you so much! Imagine the panic I felt when Qrow told me Raven kidnapped you!"

June softly cooed at the interaction between Magna and his mother. His cheeks became dusted with a light pink but Magna wasn't that embarrassed. He hated to admit it but he was a wee bit of a mama's boy.

He pulled himself out of his mother's embrace, motioning towards his side as he smiled, "Mum, this is June. She a friend I made while 'staying' with Raven."

Emily turned to the young maiden, frightening her as June unconsciously straightened herself. June sent Magna an angry pout while Emily just gently smiled.

"Hello dear, my name is Emily Opus, Magna's mother. I hope my son didn't do anything rude to you." Emily happily said.

Magna groan as he quietly muttered, "Mum… come on…"

A light chuckle escaped Emily's lips as she said, "I'm sorry Magna but you can be a bit of a hand full."

Seeing the banter between mother and son, June visibly relaxed as she brightly smiled, "It's nice to meet you, miss Emily. My name is June Orchid. And don't worry, your son was a perfect gentleman. Though he can be a bit rough during training."

While Emily and June were getting to know each other, Qrow managed to drag his battered body over to Magna as he pleaded, "Magna… please heal me… I… I want to laugh at my sister one last time…"

Magna rolled his eyes as he whispered, "That's what got you into this mess in the first place."

Even though he said that, Magna had already changed cluster.

The memories of a certain badass healer appeared in his mind. Magna placed a hand on Qrow's shoulder, ignoring the painful groan that escaped his lips as his palms slowly glowed.

It wasn't long before Qrow jumped to his feet, completely healed.

Magna watched as Qrow silently made his way over to Raven with his scroll, darkly chuckling to himself as he went to do who knows what.

A sigh escaped his lips as he was very thankful for this particular cluster. Usato Ken, a normal teenager who was pulled to another world when his friends were summoned to become heros.

While not being a hero himself, Usato Ken was found to have an affinity for healing magic.

From the day he found out his affinity, he was picked up by a woman named Rose and trained to become apart of the rescue squad, a group incharge of saving people during times of war and conflict.

While Magna's body wasn't at Usato's level, he was strong enough to not shame Usato's power and memory.

The best part about having Usato's abilities is when he's sparring against someone. Since Magna has the ability to heal when using Usato's cluster, sparring with Yang becomes much more meaningful because they don't need to hold back.

Even when he trains and spars with the twins, they also grew stronger because they could go all out without repercussions. There were times where they did break something, whether it was Magna or the girls, but Magna would heal them as quickly as he could.

Obviously, the first time any of them broke something, they turned into a crying mess. However, Magna made sure to hug them while healing them as it helped calm them down.

Magna smiled gently as he remembered when he broke his arm while sparring against Yang. She had fainted when she saw his arm bent the other way while Ruby and the twins hugged him while whispering comforting words to him.

It helped calm him down just enough to heal be able to himself. Sadly, Yang blamed herself and tried to lock herself in her room.

Keyword: tried. When she refused to open her door so Magna could show her he was fine, he literally kicked the door down.

Even though Yang was surprised, she had tears in her eyes as she blamed herself for not holding back. Magna, however, assured her he was fine and that she just need to learn control.

Taiyang didn't like how they sparred while not holding back but everyone else actually approved.

They knew that the grimm wouldn't hold anything back so they felt it was best to teach them how to fight while going all out.

Qrow was especially supportive of teaching them when to hold back and when to go all out.

The only ones that didn't get to spar while going all out were Ruby and Sophia. Sophia was only 6 years old, barely old enough to start some light physical exercise while Ruby… was Ruby.

No one, not even Magna, could fight Ruby while going all out. She was just so... innocent. It hurt everyone when she cried so no one wanted to make her cry by hurting her.

Magna knew she would become over-reliant of Crescent Rose in the future so he did his best to train her in martial arts. Luckily, she managed to pick up a few moves so she won't be totally defenseless without her weapon.

…Though it needs to be said that she was still a complete amateur at close-quarters combat.

Oddly enough though, Ruby was strong enough to split 5 thick, wooden boards with a kick. Turns out that all that running she does while using her semblance made her legs super strong.

Magna shook his head as he watched how Qrow snapped pictures of his badly beaten and unconscious sister. It was plain as day to see that there existed some bad blood between the Branwen twins.

Suddenly, Qrow grinned as he stuck one of Raven's fingers up her nose. She groaned painfully at the sudden movement but Qrow ignored it as he bit his lips in an attempt to stifle his growing laughter.

Just as Qrow finished taking a picture, a large shadow loomed over him as the sound of knuckles cracking came from behind him.

Sweat dripped down Qrow's forehead like a waterfall as he shakily sent the pictures to Magna and muttered, "…Have mercy."

---

Lying on the ground, Qrow groaned as he tried to open his newly bruised eyes. Magna was speechless as his mother beat Qrow up rather ruthlessly.

Magna showed a forced smile as he said, "Uh… Mum? Are you doing okay? Don't you think that you might have over done it?"

Emily flicked her hair to the side while letting out a content sigh, "Nope." She paused. An angry expression appeared on her face as she growled, "Do you know what Qrow did? He burst into our house early in the morning, drunk as hell, and screamed, 'Magna's been kidnapped!' before throwing up on the ground and fainting."

Magna face palmed. He suddenly felt like giving his mentor a kick. Lucky for him though, Magna decided against hitting him because Qrow currently looked like he would die from the wind blowing on him too hard.

A soft sigh escaped his lips as Magna moved next to the downed Branwen twins and placed his hand on them. They glowed in a dim light for a few seconds before both twins shot to their feet.

After being healed, Raven instantly turned to Qrow and clocked him in the chin. Watching her brother fall back onto the ground, Raven snorted and said, "That's for being a dick. I was still awake when you were doing all that shit to me."

Qrow groaned. He turned to Magna and said, "You mind healing me again? My jaw actually hurt from that one and I want to be able to drink without it hurting."

Magna just rolled his eyes as he ignored him, "Moving on, what are you and Qrow doing out here, mum? Did you decided to tag along on a mission or something?"

"I was actually looking for you. Qrow knew where to find some bandits so all I had to do was make sure that they where apart of the Branwen tribe." Emily said with a grin.

She repeatedly punched her fist into her palm, letting Magna know just how she question the bandits.

Seeing the mother-son duo ignore him, Qrow shrugged his shoulders as he tried to drink from his flask, forgetting the fact that it was empty. Raven didn't take well to being ignored as her eyes slowly narrowed.

However, before she could even speak a single word, Emily turned and glared at her. Raven could see by the look in her eyes that she promised pain if she tried to antagonise them.

Opting to watch herself, Raven swallowed her fear as she cautiously said, "Er… Magna and I had a deal. I was to take him and June to my brother and in exchange, he would give back my weapons. Can… Can I have them back?"

Emily's eyes narrowed dangerously as she eyed Raven. Kidnapping her son had instantly put Raven at the top of her shit list. If she didn't need to, Emily would never allow her near her son.

Magna, on the other hand, thought seriously over her request. She wasn't wrong. He did say that he would give her weapons back when they made it to Qrow.

However, there was also a chance that once she got her weapons back, Raven would attack them. She didn't really need to win, she only needed to kill June.

Once June died, there's a high chance that the maiden powers would go to her since Raven, her killer, would be the only person on her mind.

Obviously, he considered the fact that his mother might gain the maiden powers but the chances were low. They had only just met and were still quite awkward around each other, especially June.

After a few minutes, Magna sighed as he pulled out her weapons from the shadows. Somehow, it had never occurred to Amber to use her semblance to store things.

She focused fully on the combat aspect of her semblance, forgetting the versatility of being able to manipulate the shadows.

When she first saw Magna storing things in her semblance, Amber seemed to shutdown as her mind blanked.

It wasn't a very hard thing to do but her mind subconsciously blocked the idea because she wanted combat prowess, not utility.

That also happened to be the day Magna found out her feelings towards him as she, in the heat of the moment, gave Magna a kiss.

Mama bear and the girls were very unhappy about that as they pulled her off him and lectured her on self-control.

Anyway, Emily expressed her reluctance at the idea while June seemed to be sitting this one out. She didn't really mind giving Raven her weapons back but she also understood the dangers.

While no one but Magna noticed, June was secretly channeling her aura into a very powerful water ball. Little droplets of water condensed at her fingertips as she waited for Raven to make a move.

Sure, she knew that her measly waterball wouldn't actually be able to hurt her but she only needed to distract her. Then, it would be up to both Magna and his mother to take care of the bandit chief.

Raven's eyes widened slightly for a second before returning to normal. She gripped the hilt of her sword and tried to take it when she felt Magna's grip tighten.

Suddenly, Magna leaned in close as he whispered, "Just try and do something stupid once you get your weapons back. I don't care if your Yang's mother, I… WILL… ERASE… YOU…"

He shoved her weapons into her hands and glared at her, seemingly waiting for her to attack. After a few seconds passed and she still showed no signs of attacking, Magna turned and said, "Let's go home…"

Raven wasted no time escaping. She knew she wasn't a match for Emily and she didn't have a clear view on Magna's strength yet.

She honestly just thought of him as a lucky kid with a relatively strong semblance that somehow linked in with magic.

As long as she wasn't seen, Raven firmly believed that she could easily take him down. If Magna was to know her thoughts, he would probably die of laughter.

He had so many ways to defeat her that it wasn't even funny. There was a certain giant-hating teen, or a certain teenage scientific rail gun, there was a very slim chance of her actually winning in a fight. Then again, anything can happen.

Qrow seemed to agree with his initial thought as he watched over his sister with a smirk. He had his scroll in his hand, ready to capture the moment she tries something and subsequently gets beaten up.

Sadly, that moment never came as she instantly opened a portal and disappeared inside. Though not before she leaving Magna her scroll number and a note telling him he was welcome at the tribe at anytime.

A disappointed sigh escaped Qrow's lips as he went to kick a small pebble. However, he froze as soon as his foot made contact with the stone before screaming in abrupt pain.

Magna's lips twitched while Emily slowly bent down and yanked the stone from the ground, revealing a relatively large stone that had at least 90% of it's body underground.

Qrow was hopping around on one foot, cursing to high heavens when his scroll started to ring.

Fighting back the pain, Qrow opened his scroll and growled, "Yeah!? Oh, hey Oz… Yeah, we found him… No, we're fine. We'll probably be back in a day or two… What!? A mission!? But!"

Suddenly, all traces of Qrow's usually sarcastic expression disappeared as he continued, "Are you serious?.. I doubt she needs help, Oz. It's Amber we're talking about…"

Qrow saw the confusion in the mother-son duos eyes as he covered the voice receiver of his scroll and said, "Not the Amber that kissed you, another Amber."

Magna blushed as he glared at Qrow. That was still a sore spot for him. It's not that he didn't enjoy it. It was the fact that Amber kissed him when he was only ten years old.

He was more than a little off put by that, even though he was into older woman. She was someone he saw as family, so it hit him alot harder than he thought. And it showed when he started avoiding her for a couple days.

Obviously, this lead Amber to believe that she screwed everything up, making her act as if the world was ending.

It took ALOT of talking for the pair to come to return to normal. Though, the way Magna and Amber looked at each other became alot more affection.

The contents of their talk was known by no one but the people involved. Even Emily doesn't know what they talked about that made them so affectionate.

Qrow only took a few more minutes to finish his call. Putting his scroll back into his pocket, Qrow looked at Magna, June and Emily with a deadly serious glare and said, "Change of plans. Ozpin gave me a mission and it's far too important to ignore."

"There's a village a few hours away by airship. We need to get there and meet up with a friend of mine named Amber and escort her to Beacon. Oz has already sent an airship to our location so all we need to do is wait."

Emily seemed to want to protest but the look Qrow had in his eyes seemed to plead with her to come along, as if he knew he needed the extra help.

In the end, Emily, Magna and June weren't in that much of a hurry to get home as they decided to tag along on Qrow's mission.

I mean, what's the worst that could happen?
