Chapter 2: Foiled

Havel's feet rhythmically pounded the ground, leading him straight towards the food he was previously at.

Once there, Havel found the drink with the darkest color: a soda. He filled a cup to the brim, then combed through the surrounding crowds with his eyes to find his target.

He lifted his foot, intent on walking forward, when a hand firmly grabbed his arm, stopping him in place.

Havel's head turned to face Michael.

"I'm going to do it. Let go." He growled.

Michael's grip did not loosen, but words contrary to what Havel expected rang out, "I know, but if you're going to do it, at least go all the way."

Michael used his free hand to motion toward the large pitcher of soda that Havel poured from.

Realizing his mistake, Havel laughed before patting Michael's hand, indicating to Michael that he was right.

Michael's hand opened, and Havel gave a small chuckle.

SLOSH

Havel poured the cup of soda back into the pitcher, threw the empty plastic cup into a nearby trash can, and lifted the pitcher.

Michael stepped aside and pulled out his cellphone. Havel would need the recording later for the online humiliation.

DON, DON, DON, DON

Havel marched onward with a large pitcher of black soda in his hands.

The attention such a scene attracted was not small, as many of the surrounding people couldn't make heads or tails of why Havel was walking around carrying the soda. Maybe it was contaminated by something falling in and he wanted to replace it?

The chatter about the matter was noticed by Richard, who was still talking about a T.V. show with Samantha and Catherine several meters away.

He looked up to see that Havel was walking straight towards them while holding the pitcher of soda from the refreshments stand.

"What 'cha got that for, Havel?" Richard interrupted Samantha's rant.

Curious, Catherine and Samantha turned around to look at what Richard commented on.

"You can't possibly drink that much soda." Catherine joked.

Havel was only a few meters away at that point and most definitely heard them speak, yet didn't respond. He didn't even smile at them, simply keeping an emotionless expression.

Four meters.

Three meters.

Two meters.

Richard, Catherine, and Samantha were very confused. They couldn't understand what Havel was doing. He obviously didn't pick up the pitcher to serve them soda when he could have brought it in cups, and he also didn't respond to them when they spoke. Was he in a bad mood? What was going on?

Their questions were answered when Havel's arms began lifting the pitcher over his head.

Everyone watching was shocked! He was...dousing Catherine with the soda!

But...why?!

Catherine was Havel's girlfriend of four years! The two were known to be profusely lovey-dovey! They constantly bragged about how lucky they were to run into their soulmate so early in life! They were both blessed with enviable looks and intelligent minds! They were even very protective of each other!

Why would Havel do such a thing as pour soda onto his precious girlfriend?!

Even more bewildered were Richard and Samantha, some of Havel's best friends, and at times, partners in crime. Literally.

They partook in many activities over the years with Havel, ranging from playing sports and cramming for tests to cheating on tests, trespassing, and bullying.

They would take bullets, go to jail, and kill for each other! Their bonds were unshakable and eternal!

Everyone was stunned over Havel's actions…except Catherine.

As soon as her mind comprehended Havel's actions, she knew she was in for it. Yes, she could certainly claim without a doubt that she knew what Havel was maddened over. For a long time, she dreaded the day when he learned of it.

Catherine originally wanted to talk and apologize to Havel about it…but after some consideration, she threw that idea out the window. Havel's personality was one which no one wanted their enemy to have. He would incessantly scheme for months on end to take down someone that barely did anything to him, as long as he didn't like them. He even pushed someone near life-ending depression after they giggled when Havel tripped running up a flight of stairs.

Needless to say, for his girlfriend to have a drunken one-night-stand with someone else was an irredeemable sin to Havel.

The moment Catherine understood that Havel was drenching her in soda was the moment she came to terms with the fact that her lifestyle would change. No longer would she have a wealthy boyfriend that spoiled her and friends that had her back on almost every inconvenience. She was resigned to leaving the state to escape Havel if need be.

Though, she did pity the loss of her beautiful white and gold dress.

She closed her eyes and moved her arms in front of her face as quickly as she could, expecting Havel to hit her with the pitcher as well.

One second…two seconds…three seconds…

Gasps resounded from her surroundings, and yet…no soda.

Catherine tentatively opened her eyes and peeked from behind her arms which were raised in front of her face to protect it.

Havel…was gone!

On the floor where he previously stood were a few drops of soda, proof that he was absolutely present just a moment before. Yet, where'd he go?

While the crowds panicked, rubbed their eyes, and searched the area for Havel, Catherine took advantage of his disappearance to flee.

"I don't know why or how he vanished, but now that he's gone, I will be too!" she thought.

...

"What…the hell…?"

Havel was still poised with the pitcher of soda above his head, a few drops dripping down his hand. He slowly lowered his arms, bringing the pitcher in front of him.

Those actions were done subconsciously, because Havel was too shocked to think. No longer was he in front of Catherine, Samantha, and Richard, surrounded by schoolmates attending their senior prom under a starry sky atop a large hill. Though he was still under a starry sky, it was a different sky, and in a different place.

Under his feet was dirt and grass instead of concrete. Around him were large trees instead of people.

[Your only goal is to safely escort the three children across the desert. Achieve it however you can. So as to not get lost, follow the compass. If you fail, you die.]

[To aid you in your mission, you will be given support in the form of quests. Complete those quests and you will receive rewards.]

The words that appeared in Havel's mind slowly woke him from his shock. His eyes rapidly blinked a few times before he began noticing more differences in his surroundings from where his senior prom was held. The air was very dry, the sky was brighter despite still being nighttime, and his body experienced more…pressure. He put down the pitcher of soda, then experimentally jumped as hard as he could. He did not reach the same height he could previously.

Havel was stable enough to recognize that something very strange just happened and that the words in his head were to his benefit, thus, he studied them.

"I need to safely escort three children across a desert and follow a compass."

Bewildered, Havel turned to look around. No children, nor a desert. Was he in the right place?

After a moment of thought, he checked his suit pockets. Bingo. In his hand was a flat, round object with a needle in the center of the hollow space behind a glass cover that pointed to his general right. He immediately recognized it as a compass, but knew something was different.

"Wait… Huh. There are no cardinal directions."

The compass in his hand lacked any kind of marking that indicated a direction. All he could see in it was the needle.

"Then, if I…"

Havel turned to his right, keeping an eye on the compass. As expected, the needle was now pointing straight ahead. He sighed.

"I guess Catherine will have to wait to be showered in soda. That bitch." The strange transition did nothing to subside his wrath.

With that, Havel held the pitcher of soda in one hand, the compass in the other, and began walking in the direction the compass pointed towards.
