Yu Xiao Is Being Adopted!
Yu Yan sat by Yu Xiao all night. Yu Yan didn't even think of sleeping, she lay awake thinking about the children in the orphanage. Why? Why would they target her sister who was young and innocent? She hated every single one of them, how dare they even look in her sister's direction! Yu Yan paced around the bedroom a bit, her thoughts clouding her head. Yu Yan looked up at the time and realised it was midnight, a late time for a child to be up at, but also the perfect time for snacks!
Yu Yan walked towards this door and the floorboards creaked under her feet. Her stomach rumbles loudly and she clutches it trying to prevent the noise. She was going to sneak some food — which she shouldn't be doing, but... The orphanage didn't feed her enough to satisfy her monstrous hunger.
She walks past the staircase and into the kitchen which has a padlock on every cupboard and on the fridge. She knew he Lin since she saw Madam Lin type it in countless times. Yu Yan typed in the code and slowly opened the cupboard. She caught a glimpse of heaven as the many bright coloured packets of crisps and biscuits sat there, beckoning her. Yu Yan got a bag and began to put in a few snacks, including some for Yu Xiao when she woke up. She slowly retreats to the medical ward when she hears footsteps creaking down the stairs.
Yu Yan gasps in shock and quickly retreats. She hides behind the door in the kitchen and spots Madam Lin walking in... with her eyes closed? She watches as she walks to the refrigerator and takes out a box of ice-cream. Yu Yan realised that Madam Lin was sleepwalking and used this to her advantage as she quickly snuck out and sprinted down the corridor and into the medical ward where Yu Xiao had already sat awake.
Yu Yan sat down on the edge of Yu Xiao's bed giving a warm smile.
"Hey, how are you doing?" Yu Yan asked as Yu Xiao turned towards her.
"My stomach still hurts from the bruises, apart from that I'm fine." She whispered. Yu Xiao was always a very reserved and shy girl even from her sister.
"Do you want to tell me why they attacked you?" Yu Yan asked, soothingly. Yu Xiao bobbed her head and Yu Yan smiled at her childishness.
"Well, I was walking to dinner and I heard them whispering in a group. I decided to ignore them but... they began to surround me. I shoved around from person to person and when I asked them to stop they laughed at me and pushed me onto the floor. One of the boys said: "You always get special treatment and are listened to. Do you expect us to do the same?" I told him it wasn't my fault I was like this and he smiles and kicked my stomach. Then the rest of the kids came and joined in..." Yu Xiao said after she took in a deep breath.
Yu Yan felt hurt and angry. The blows her sister felt, she felt, but for the sake of her sister she put on a smile: "Would you like some biscuits?"
Yu Yan held the bag out in front of them and Yu Xiao broke out into a smile, gladly accepting the packet. She impatiently tore the packet and offered some to her sister. Yu Yan declined as she had her own feast waiting for her. Yu Yan grabbed the TV remote and switched on a movie, she moved under the duvet next to Yu Xiao. The two girls comfortably sat in silence until they fell asleep...

The next morning, Yu Yan had woken up to see the bright sun rays escaping through the window. She could hear voices and looked around in shock. Were they being burgled? She looked up and saw the TV still on and a different movie was playing. She sighed and grabbed the remote off the desk next to Yu Xiao's bed and switched the TV off. However, she could still hear voices. She was in a bad mood since the voices had ruined her sleep, there were only a few days left for the holiday so she needed as much sleep as she could get before going back to school.
She lazily rolled out of bed and fell with a loud 'THUD!' on the floor. She groaned standing up and realised she never get over her hatred for the morning. She moved towards the direction the sound was coming from and realised it was Madam Lin's office. Yu Yan scrunched her eyebrows in confusion as she knew Madam Lin was not a morning person either. So what would she be doing this early on the phone?
Yu Yan pressed herself against the wall and began to eavesdrop in Madam Lin's conversation.
"Yes, that's right..."
"She does have an older sister..."
"Her name is Yu Yan..."
"You can't..."
"She will be so disappointed..."
Yu Yan face was etched in confusion the moment she heard her name mentioned. They were talking about Yu Xiao and she was the older sister. 'Why would they want to talk about us? We're not that interesting.' Suddenly, a light bulb switched in her head. Were they being adopted! Finally, we get to leave this hell hole! I wonder who would be so kind as to adopt us?
She quickly snuck back into the medical where Yu Xiao was currently watching another movie, feasting on snacks. Yu Yan smiled at her sister and jumped onto the sofa.
"What is it?" Yu Xiao asked, questioning her happy mood.
"Nothing, you'll find out later." Yu Yan replied she didn't want to give her sister false hope.
Yu Yan continued staring at the screen and wondered what their new house would look like. They are still kids and have an imagination but had to grow up fast due to their living conditions. She imagined a house, larger than the orphanage flowers on the outside. She'd help her adoptive mom garden and constantly read book to her heart's content.
She sighed at her wonderful imaginations. A moment later, footsteps could be heard which shook Yu Yan out of her trance. Yu Xiao stuffed the snacks under the bed and Yu Yan quickly grabbed the remote switching the TV off. Yu Xiao pulled the blanket closer to her, acting as though she had woke up and Yu Yan leapt or her bed sitting up.
Madam Lin walked in with a grim smile. Both girls looked at each other before looking back at Madam Lin.
"Girls I have some new to make, one good and one devastating. You will have a choice by the way. Somebody wants to adopt someone... Yu Xiao, that someone so you." Madam Lin began.
"What about Yu Yan?" Yu Xiao asked, happily.
"She isn't wanted. They want to help you, Yu Xiao. For your operations and your conditions. He thinks that you shouldn't be living in these sort of conditions. I couldn't help but agree more."
Yu Yan's face fell as she tried to imagine life without her sister. Everything she did was for her. She studied hard to get a good job and then pay for a house for them to live together in. She constantly got into fights and was feared — no one wanted to be her friend. She also thought about how easy it would be for Yu Xiao if she went with the people who wanted to adopt her. It would be a shortcut to success as they sounded quite wealthy.
For now, Yu Yan was stuck in a dilemma...
