As for the way to compromise with nobles who wanted to proved themselves in war but did not want to abandoned their privileges as noble throughout his domain, he would put those nobles with or without private troops into the fixed ranks with no command power as auxiliary units received the order directly from the commander, allowed them to start from the higher position but no promotion.
As for those that decide to join the army David would put them to be commissioned officers in the military rank according to their nobility position if their ability up to the task, for example, baron must start from lieutenant while count could be as high as the colonel. At the early period, David as a Baron used the Roman army legion ranks because the number of war capable literate officer in his army was not much but changed his policy later after his army became bigger, only conserved some words to call the units.
In Noseth, the concept of education was of that of Medieval age where education was only reserved for people of elite class, with some exception like Ramale and some city-states around the lake that provide education for free male citizens, therefore military academy to train the people into competent commander was none. In his domain, David changed this and promote the education, the policy did not meet much resistance from the parents because of the king direct rule people in the kingdom of Vatsa already familiar with a pseudo-education since long ago. When he succeeded the late king, David decided to build an exclusive two academy, one for civil officer and one for a military officer.
The military academy situated at the east of the old capital in Vatsa, thus the academy call east point military academy. During the construction of the academy, David wanted to put the academy at the west but could not find the right place so he could only cope with it.
For those nobles youth with high patriotic and common youth with extraordinary talent that wanted to prove themselves in the army, they could enter the royal military academy. As for princes, every royalty except crown prince could not directly involve with the military unless he received the military education.
As of now, only the third price and fourth price of David graduated from east point academy and serving in the army. David was afraid of his descendants killing each other so he decided to at least control other royalty from the military. However, as his third queen asked, he still let the crown direct line to serving in the army if they were capable enough.
As a result of his military reforms, David was able to display the full capability of his army both on and off the battlefield, and in doing so he significantly increased the effectiveness of the soldier as an individual fighter as well as the mobility of the army as a whole.
However, he may forget that without the power of nationalism and compulsory education, a standing army loyalty shifted away from the head of the state towards the generals who led the army. Look into the history of the earth, it became common for a general to win the throne or consolidate his power by using the army, in reverse the loyal general would be given a false charge if the Emperor feared his own general. It was known from the time David just became a sovereign of client state under the protection of Ramela republic that he did not let military force which did not have an oath of allegiance to him to roam free in his country.
Later David allowed some, that were of high chivalry and deserved to be called knight, employed them in his service and exterminated the bad one. There was a rumor that one of the reasons David change his mind around his mid 20 may be after he met Jeanne, a very cute boyish look teenager, the knight's leader of the order of holy warrior, an order of knight consist only of extremely capable fighters with virtuousness nature.
As David power became more and more spread, most knight's order agreed to lower their weapons and disbanded or joined the army but there were those who would not change their unethical behavior, hoped that they could still live freely as they did, they were wronged though. And when David became a sole hegemony over the central plain, only two choices were given for them in place under David influence. Dead or Surrender unconditionally. The big ones ran away to the north tried to put a resistant but the attempt was futile and the rebels were ordered to be slaughtered indiscriminately. Some of his enemies ran and hid deep out of people's sight, but now that the continent was unified under him, he let those people went and withered away. Only one thing David did not understand was why Jeanne refused him when both knew that it was mutual love.
The military was not that important anymore but he did not want to disband all of them, doing that would just ask for rebellion. David placed the high ranking officer within his sight at the large office building in the outer ring of the capital and provide them with the place for living within the inner ring, while they only need to attend the meeting at the castle once a week.
