BEEP
My eyes slowly opened and the first thing I saw was the blinding light that only a fluorescent bulb could give when eyes adjust. The beeping of the machine next to me indicated that I was alright and that I have an oddly high BPM. An IV drip was in my left arm and I could feel the liquid entering my veins and circulating throughout my body.
I sat up and felt perfectly fine. It was almost as if everything that happened was a nightmare but my reflection said otherwise. The glass door to my hospital room gave off the appearance of a boy that was sixteen years of age, just like the one I saw before.
'I guess this is me now.'
I pressed the button on the remote to my side that called a nurse. Soon after, a nurse with curly blond hair entered my room with the fireman from before, Logan.
Logan had bags under his eyes and looked very on edge indicating that he had not slept for a long while. He seemed happy to see me awake.
"I knew you'd pull through."
He put his hand on my head and gently patted me like I were his kin. In my old life, I had no one. No family, no friends, no one except myself.
'I wonder if this is what it's like to have a father?'
Logan gave a tired smile then proceeded to sit in the chair next to my hospital bed.
Logan spoke, "How is he?"
The blond nurse smiled beautifully, "He'll be fine. I'll go get the doctor to take a look at him."
The nurse left as swiftly as she appeared. I turned to Logan, "How long have I been out for?"
"Two days."
"That long huh?"
There was an awkward silence that filled the atmosphere. I broke it, "Thank you."
Logan's eyes moved from the ground and fixated on me, "Don't be, it's my job."
"Not that." I looked at the cotton white sheets covering me and continued, "Thank you for worrying about me."
Logan was quiet for a moment then spoke, "How would you feel if I adopted you?"
I smiled, "I'd like that."
The doctor walked in and greeted us, "My name is Dr. Kanstrom. It's great to see that you are doing fine there lad."
Dr. Kanstrom gave a hearty laugh and put on his stethoscope, "Let's see, no abnormalities of the heart, breathing better than I am, and a strong pulse. You're in better shape than I was at your age!"
I let out a little chuckle and the doctor continued, "Now then, let's see what we're dealing with here."
Dr. Kanstrom pulled back the cotton sheets revealing my legs. He studied them a bit then began to feel for any inflammations but found nothing. He even asked for me to say if it hurt when he touched a certain place on my leg but I felt no pain.
"Amazing!" He exclaimed. "Kid, you are really something to have healed in two days."
Dr. Kanstrom took out some x-ray captures and showed both Logan and I. On the left were two legs that looked like a two ton pick-up truck had trampled over them and on the right were normal, perfectly healthy legs.
Logan looked astonished, "That's impossible!"
Kanstrom spoke, "I have worked as a doctor for many years and have seen nothing of the sort. This is nothing less than a miracle."
Kanstrom cleared his throat, "Since this young lad here is perfectly healthy, he is permitted to leave any time he wants."
I took the IV drip out of my arm and the pulse reader off my finger. I got off of the bed and walked over to Logan who was still sitting in his chair, "Pick your jaw up off the floor and let's go."
He nodded still in shock. We left the hospital and drove to Logan's house. On our way, Logan played some music on the box he called the radio. He explained how this vehicle was moving but I still couldn't understand him. The closest I could relate these to were song magic and wind magic.
We arrived at Logan's house faster than expected. It seems that cars are quite dependable. I entered through the door and saw the living room. The house was pretty small but considering that I didn't have one before, this was exciting. I lived in a forest and made friends with the creatures within it, this was my way of life.
The living room had a worn down leather couch and a wooden coffee table. There was a black box on the wall that was attached to some wires leading into the walls. There was a small kitchen with the necessities, a fridge, sink and dishwasher. A short hallway led to two rooms on either side and a bathroom directly ahead. The room on the left was a bedroom with a king sized bed and on the right was a bedroom that looked like it was meant for a child, even though the only one living here was Logan.
"Hey, Logan, does someone else live here?"
Logan walked over to me, "Ah, no, it's just you and me. I had a son but he passed away some time ago."
"I'm sorry, I didn't know."
Logan smiled, "Don't worry about it. Like I said, it was a long time ago."
He patted my head and continued, "This'll be your room, if you need anything i'll be across the hall taking a nap. I haven't slept for two days because of you!"
Logan chuckled a bit then punched me lightly on the arm. He walked into his room and I waited until he was asleep before I made my way to the living room. There was something I needed to verify. I took a seat cross-legged on the floor and began to concentrate. I put out my hand and the coffee table began to hover.
'This body is capable of magic as well?'
There was one more thing, my eyes. Whoever this body belonged to had a special power. I don't know if they knew this because they didn't use it on that black figure.
So far I can say I know one of my abilities and that is when my eyes turn bronze. When bronze, my eyes replay a scene of significance in the place where I stand. It was third person point of view and I was connected to each person's emotions throughout the replay. The other power is still unknown. When my eyes turned gold in the replay the flames immediately vanished from existence. This could mean any number of things, did I remove the room of its oxygen? Did I emit a strong gust of wind, extinguishing the fire? Was it something else?
'It seems that this power has many mysteries.'
Of course I would want to know the extent of my powers but now was not the time nor the place to test them.
'I'll have to wait.'
I walked towards the bedroom where Logan said was mine and went inside. The walls were painted a sky blue and blue carpet covered the ground, each still in perfect condition unlike the rest of the house. A full sized bed sat under a shaded window and next to a pile of toys. There were toy cars and building blocks, cards and board games. Next to the bed was also a night stand with a lamp on top. The clock below read 10:00 pm.
'It's pretty late huh?'
I was still a bit drowsy from all the things that had happened and decided that I should just go to bed. I undid the covers and climbed into bed, tucking myself in and getting comfortable. Before I realized it, I had already drifted off.
