Chapter 1: The breaking news
"Breaking News!" the man on the tv said urgently. "Outbreaks and riots throughout high schools in Southeast America have caused The US Government to consider taking serious action." he paused for a second, his usually flawless face overtaken with dark circles and a wrinkle between his brows. "They will aparently take three people 13-18 years old from each high school district in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia" he paused again, seeming as surprised at the news as many were. "Joining me now, is Samuel Carlson from the mental health division at the pentagon, Hi Samuel".
"Hello" Samuel said "You are correct, we will be taking 3 high school students ages 13-18 from each district. One with the highest GPA, one with the lowest, and another random one taken." Letting out a deep sigh he continued, "I deeply apologize to every parent and student we have to take from each of these districts in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, but we have a purpose" Samuel paused as if comtemplating whether or not he should tell the viewers this. "We believe there is some sort or mutation or disease affecting high school students' brains. This is what we believe has caused the sudden rebelious and aggressive tendencies in the minds of these adolescents. We realize how shocking this might be to hear, but we must take immediate action to guarantee the safety of our future. The three kids from each school district will be perfectly safe, especially safe from getting the mutation or disease, and we hope to have them build up a resistance to it. The students selected for 'The Draw' as we call it will HAVE to come, it is not an option. If there is any resistance it will result in immediate arrest of the parents, and if anyone tries to run away, they will be hunted down by our patrols and made enemies of the state. We have already blockaded and are currently patrolling the land borders of Georgia and Alabama, and also the coastlines of each state to make sure it isnt passed on to more people throughout the country." He released the breath he had been holding, and said his final statement to end the interview "That is all for now, as the students with the highest, and lowest GPA along with the random student from each district in these three states have already been chosen and will be collected almost immediately. Thank you for your time" With that he signed of the interview leaving everyone, even the TV show host speechless.
Needless to say everyone was stunned, millions of the viewers disputing the topic on several different online chat servers. Some thought it was a prank, some hunkered down and tried to block out the military, and some sat unaffected in the outside states watching, and waiting to see what was going to happen. Some people even claimed their young teens were taken while the show was live and broadcasting. This same message played for hours over tv, news channels making sure everyone had heard of it.
Jenny remembered shutting off the TV dumbfounded by all of this and feared for her friends and herself. None of her friends had extremely high or low GPAs, but worrying about one of them being selected as a random was awful. Even if it wasn't someone she knew, it would still be someone who had friends, family, and people who cared for them. Jenny would hate to think someone would be taken, ripped from peoples lives, even if it was only three per school district. To think it could be a friend, one of her brothers, or someone she had passed in the halls, in the town, that she had never known. Never got the chance to know them, or say goodbye. Half of her considered the fact that her school had approximately 2,000 kids in it, and there were three high schools all relatitively the same size in her district, meaning her chances of being picked as the random were extremely low. Another part of her wanted to run away, and hide. To take everyone she knew and loved and hide away with them until this passes over.
Then, she even thought there may be a small desire within her to know what they would do in this program. A but of curiosity perhaps. Jenny wondered what kinds of tests, research, and studies they would do. But, most importantly, she wanted to know what this disease really was, and wasn't sure why. But she was awoken from her bout of curiosity when she heard a knock at the door and was suddenly scared senseless. There was no one else home. No one to protect her, as her older brother and father were not currently at the residence, but out at a hunting trip.
Her earlier curiosity towards the labs and studies they would do turned towards the awful things she saw in movies with evil doctors, and no way out. Suddenly panicking, she bolted towards the back door when a second knock finally came. This time, she also heard a voice....
"Jenny Penny my dearie, your father called to tell me to come over right away after he heard about the recent news. With taking the children. I came over as soon as I could." Jennys Grandmother called through the door.
Jenny breathed out a humongous sigh of relief, relaxing her previosly stiff figure. "Coming Gran" she walked up to the doors, and started to turn the handle, "But Gran, wheres Gramp--" she was cut off by the appearance of a large man in the doorway fully decked out in military gear. It had been a recording. Her face immediately paled as she realized it was her. She was the random. The officer started reaching for her wrist, but Jenny was quicker. And her first instinct was 'run'. So that is exactly what she did.
