I wake up in a white room, my eyes look around the room and see a figure, my vision is still blurry but the figure looks smaller than me, I blink and then jump as I find myself in a hospital room. I sit up and look around. The figure next to me seems to have just noticed my awakening.
"Hey Aristide."
"Oh, hey Cassandra, what the hell happened?"
"Mike and James found you."
"Yeah, I have to thank them later."
"Who did this to you?"
"No one, I tripped."
"Aristide," She looks at me, clearly not buying my lie, "You didn't trip and get a cut lip, bruiser chest, neck and shoulders and a black eye, and nearly dislocate your knee, I was worried, and when I went to get you, Mike, James, Mr. White and two paramedics were around you."
"Yeah, it's fine."
"Aristide!"
"What?!"
She didn't know what to respond, "I love you."
"I do too," I lie back down, "How did I get into this shape?"
"I don't know, but Coach White wanted to talk to you when you woke up, so he should be here soon," She sighed, "Why don't you just say who did this to you?"
"Because I don't want to, something tells me that if i give in now, I won't get anything but the satisfaction of revenge, nothing else," Coach White walked into my room, "Hey Coach."
"Hey Aristide, hey Cassandra, how are you feeling, Aristide?"
"I want to get up, but something tells me I shouldn't."
"The doctor is going to tell you about that, but I am not letting you play the practice for a few days, at least, I don't want you to get hurt more."
"I am fine with that, I'll still come watch."
"You are really passionate about football, aren't you?" I nod, "Hang in there, big man, you'll get better, see you later," He left the room.
That day, I was on the side of the field, standing next to Coach White as they were setting up a play. I have a brace on my left knee, the chop block injured my knee. I sigh as I see that David, the long snapper is taking my spot, "Coach."
"Hmm?"
"Can I tell you something?"
"Go ahead."
"I've watched a couple games from the Spartans, they like calling a Pro-fake-dive-tight-end-out, call that, I want to see how our team can deal against it, if we can, we have the game in the bag."
"Okay, okay, I see what you mean."
"And one of the things we have to look for is the pass-block, weak-side guard."
"Weak side? But the call has three on the opposite side of the tight end, that is a strong."
"Tight end is how my old coach, Coach Billy, used to call the strength, so the tight end side pushes out and the tight end sneaks."
"Okay, okay, we'll do that next," I stare at Michael. He glances back at me and smiles.
"They are also weak to running back passes, if you do that, we can get free yardage."
"I noticed that as well, but I think that you are right, you don't seem well, take a rest, I won't hold it against you, if you watch film and lead the defense on the field during the game, you would have earned more of my respect than standing her on a bad knee for no real reason."
"Yes Coach, have a good day," I sigh and begin walking, Cassandra meets me at the entrance of the field. She looks at me and sighs as I half-limp towards her, grimacing. She hugs me and seems about to cry, "Cassandra?"
"You are worrying me just by walking around, I am sorry, I am just," I pass my hand through her hair.
"I like your hair untied."
"You noticed."
"I try," I begin walking as she slowly walks next to me, "I think I am going to my room, you want to come?"
"Maybe come to my room? It is closer to the cafeteria."
"True, then, let's go?" I grimace as I lose my balance and catch myself on my left knee. She grabs me and helps me regain my balance, "I didn't realize you were this strong," She blushes as I begin walking again, "I wish that never happened."
"Who did it to you?" It sounds more of a demand then a question, "If you don't want to tell anyone, I can keep it a secret."
"I told you that I tripped."
"Aristide, please."
"No."
"Fine, if you don't want to, I just hope it doesn't happen again."
"What do you want to do in your room?"
"I don't know, what do you want to do?"
"I want to get to know you more, you know, we went a little fast."
"Let's do that then."
