Chapter 22: I don't want them to get hurt
Outside the restaurant
"Sammie, wait for me here. I'll get the car." Kyle said then left when he saw Sammie nodded her head.
After a few minutes his car stops in front of her but before she can open the passenger seat Kyle already steps out of the car and opened it for her.
She fastened her seat belt and turns to him. "Can you turn on the music?" she asked. She wanted to save their conversation for later. She leans back on the seat then closed her eyes.
Kyle knew she was tired so he let her rest. "Alright. You take a nap first I'll wake you up when we arrive." he said.
After a few minutes she fell asleep. She didn't intend to do so but she was extremely exhausted. When they arrived Kyle park his car in a vacant slot then looked at her. He was so busy starring at her beautiful face that he forgot to wake her up.
"I broke up with you and that's the most stupid decision I made in my entire life. This time I won't make the same mistake again." he thought while touching her face.
Sammie suddenly move so he immediately tap her shoulder to wake her up. "We're here." Kyle said.
She yawns and stretched her arms then turns to him. "Kyle wait for me here I'll just get my things."
"Do you need any help?" he replied
"No need. I'll be quick." she said then immediately steps out of his car.
Inside her condo unit
She took her overnight bag from the cabinet then placed few outfits, pajamas, toiletries and her travel kit. It took her at least five minutes to pack her things. She turned the lights off then went to the elevator to go down.
When she reached the parking lot Kyle is outside the car waiting for her. Kyle saw her carrying a large bag so he approached her and took the bag. He put it inside the backseat then opened the car door for her. "He didn't change at all. Still a gentleman." she thought while fastening her seat belt.
"All set?" Kyle asked as he starts the car engine.
"Yes." she replied then they drove off.
The drive from her condo to her parents' house would take at least thirty minutes. She can no longer use sleeping as an excuse for not talking to him. She wanted to start the conversation but she can't find the correct word to say. Luckily Kyle took the initiative.
"How's uncle and auntie doing?" he asked
"Their doing good. Dad opened another branch in X province last year so he is kind of busy lately." she casually answered.
"That's wonderful. I remember he really wanted to expand the business." he paused. "What about your brother, how is he doing?"
"He's taking his studies seriously now. His in Australia for his on the job training until end of the month."
"I see. It's nice to know he is maturing now." he smiles.
"Definitely. Mom and Dad are very happy." she smiles back. "Who would have thought we can talk about these things so casually after what happened to us? Did I really forgiven you and already moved on? Maybe." she thought while glancing at him.
"am Sammie, does your family hold any grudge from me after what happened to us?" he hesitatingly asked.
"At first they were really sad but they eventually accept it. I don't think they will hold any grudges besides I didn't tell them the exact reason we broke up. They didn't ask me anyway." she honestly said.
"Thank you. I expect that they will hate me." Kyle replied after her statement sinks in to him.
"am. don't thank me. I didn't tell them because I don't want them to get hurt. They treated you like their own son and I don't want to ruin those happy memories you left with them." her eyes starting to well up so she looked at the window to avoid being seen by him. Her parents really liked Kyle. They even address him as their future son in law so it's painful for Sammie to see her parents get hurt if they knew the truth.
There was an awkward silence. After a few minutes Kyle pulled off the car. He then turns to Sammie teary eyed.
"Sammie, I know that I can no longer bring back the past. I am sorry. It's me who ruined everything. If only I can turn back the hands of time I'll do it. But it's all in the past now." he paused and took a deep breath. "Please allow me to prove myself. I promise to correct all the mistakes I've done. I really regret letting you go." she hold her hands.
"Kyle. I'm sorry but I can no longer accept you." she responds while removing her hands from his grip.
"I promise to be a better man for you. I will do anything it takes just for you to accept me back. Please Sammie, just one more chance." he continuously begs.
Sammie took a deep breath and looked at Kyle. "It's too late Kyle. I no longer love you. I guess it's true that time heals everything. I was in pain when you left me. I was so devastated. I never thought that you would throw everything away we had because of a stupid photo." tears began falling down her cheeks.
"For a time I hated you, the man that I loved the most is also the man who hurts me the most. I started blaming you then eventually myself for choosing you. Then I realize that everything happens for a reason, that I need to let go of you so I can move on with my life. Let go of what's killing. Let go of the pain. Let go of the past. Let go of you completely. They say your relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have so I slowly began loving myself more. I started enjoying life. I pampered myself, I go out with friends more often and I could do things I never thought I would. Eventually I no longer feel the pain and I'm starting to smile again. Then one day I'm back to who I used to be before I met you. That's when I knew that I already moved on." Sammie continue saying as tears kept falling on her cheeks.
Kyle wiped the tears off her face but she brushed off his hands. "I'm okay." she said
He held her hands and said. "Sammie, I was also in pain. In those time I'm also hurting. It tortures me knowing that the woman who I loved the most cheated on me. My whole world shattered into pieces. I left home and wanted to be alone. I distance myself to family and friends. I thought that if I keep myself busy and absorbed with work I would eventually forget about you but I was wrong. Before I learned about the truth I was ready to forgive you. I'm willing to go back and be with you. I promised myself that I would do everything just to win you back. You are my life. I know I'm a total jerk for not believing you. I just hope you can forgive me."
