Chapter 12: Her Honesty, His Friendship

Olivia sat on the floor and leaned on her sofa bed. She was having great ideas for a sketch she plans to be working on later that night but before anything else, she took her diary and wrote a beautiful poem especially dedicated to Augustus. She even made a label below her poetry and draw a lily flower on it. When she fold her diary, she heard a knock on the door. It was her new nanny who was just been hired yesterday. The nanny's name was Jane and she was told to call her Ate Jane.

"Yes ate Jane, wait up." She stood and walked towards the door. "What is it?"

"Olivia, your father Don Maximus just called. He and Madam Odette will not be around for dinner tonight. What would you like for dinner then?" Jane asked afraid that she will get a sarcastic reply once again.

"Just cook my favorite...and oh! can all of you be my dinner mates tonight?" Olivia answered with a soft voice without a hint of sarcasm in her tone.

"What?" Jane asked again as she was surprised to hear Olivia in this kind of tone.

Olivia did not repeat what she just said. She just went back to her bed and got her drawing pad and pencil. She raised her head while saying, "Ate Jane, please close the door and just call me when the table is ready."

"Yes, Olivia," was all Jane could answer after not believing her ears that the little madam had talked to her in this manner. She closed the door slowly still unable to comprehend the change in Olivia's manner from what she had experienced since she started and from what all the household helpers told about their little madam's attitude.

Jane was running towards the kitchen with full of enthusiasm and excitement as she was preparing the dinner for their little madam. She called Berto who was just outside the kitchen door and instructed him to tell the other house helpers that they will be dinning together with their little madam.

"It's a request from the little madam Mang Berto. Please tell your son and the others out there, okay." Jane spoke with excitement and headed back to the kitchen. She was busy preparing and setting up the table in the dining table when she hear footsteps and as she turned her head, she saw Olivia coming in to the dining area.

"May I help ate Jane?" she asked.

"Leave it to us young madam, it's almost done anyway." Jane replied.

"Don't worry ate, even of I am this young, I was taught basic household chores by my nanny in Canada who was also a Filipino." Olivia was starting to fix the chinawares and silverwares. She even got out of the kitchen and called out everyone who was around that late afternoon.

Everyone was surprised to have heard of her speaking to them politely. As if she never portrayed a child of tantrums to them. They all headed to the kitchen room afraid that the moment might cease.

Augustus was the last one to enter and Olivia was waiting for him before she lowered her eyes. She was happy to see that the seat next to her was the only seat that was empty so when Augustus got closer and nearer to her, she was so nervous much more when he sat beside her. She had mixed emotions that she cannot understand.

Because of Olivia's nervousness, she fainted. Everyone was in panic. Jane wanted to call her young madam's parents but was afraid as to what would her reason be for Olivia's fainting event.

Berto run towards where Olivia was seated and instructed all the housemaids to assist him by getting a towel and lukewarm water to aide the young madam'a condition. After seeing that she was already half awake, he called his son.

"Augustus, please carry the young madam towards her room carefully. Watch her for awhile while Jane will still be preparing for her dinner. She will have to eat it there." Berto instructed his son.

Olivia was a little awake already that when she heard Mang Berto's words she also managed to speak up, "can your son accompany me when i take my dinner?"

"Sure young madam, why not?" Berto signaled to his son to accept Olivia's offer. "He will be carrying you there as you might faint again and might fall in the stairs."

Augustus was carrying Olivia as they headed to her bedroom. She was a little bit weak and perspiring while hidding her real feeling of so much happiness that's all causing her fainting. She can't believe that she was carried by Augustus of whom she admire so much.

She could sense that Augustus was worried of her somehow when she looked at hi weakly. His eyes were tired but still he manage to gave her a sweet smile.

"Are you feeling better?" Augustus asked her as he out her in her bed while covering her with a peach colored blanket. He added a soft pillow on her head so she may be comfortable.

"A little I guess," replied Olivia.

"Since when did you feel not okay?"

"Just that moment before I fainted. I guess I was just so nervous."

"And why were you so nervous Lily? You seem to be fine when we talked earlier." Augustus stood and took a stool near Olivia's study table.

"It' because of you." Olivia told him honestly. "I just couldn't handle this feeling and I don't understand why I feel this feeling."

"You silly girl." Augustus looked at her with a smile, "it's normal to be infatuated. But find someone who's close to your age."

"But why? This is not merely an infatuation. I know I love you." Olivia lowered her eyes as she was shy to tell him those words.

"It'a not love Olivia. How could it be love when it's just you who feels it and not both of us." he told her slowly as not to anger her k owing that she has a temper when she is misunderstood by someone. "Look at us, I'm seventeen and you're just 10, how could it be love? Maybe you just feel something like that like a brotherly love because you don't have any sibling."

"No!" and tears slowly feel from Olivia's eyes. She can't fathom her feelings and even explaining it was so hard that all she could do was let her tears fall from her cheeks.

Augustus wiped her tears with his bare hands. He was sorry for Olivia but he admire her honesty and innocence. He cannot hate her for being stubborn at what she believes. She was looking at her while she was sobbing.

She saw her to be so beautiful with angelic face, deep seated eyes and lips shaped like a little heart. She was indeed beautiful. He could almost fall for her if only she was like his age.

He had been watching her every move whenever he was in the rest house vicinity and despite the talks among them that she has some temper and often had tantrum, he believed that she was not that spoiled brat at all.

Olivia raised her head, "Even if you don't like me that much, can you just play pretend that you do? Just listen to me when I wanted someone to talk to. Please?" she asked him dearly that all Augustus could ever do was to give in to her demand as she was so polite and beautiful while speaking her terms.

Jane knocked and came in with a tray for the little madam's dinner. She immediately left knowing that she had a good time talking with Augustus. It was always Madam Odette's instruction that whenever Olivia is in good mood, they must not make any moves that would stop her from what she was doing that's making her in such a mood.

Olivia started eating while Augustus was helping her out. She offered him to eat with her so he did not refuse. They ate, talked and laughed. Augustus had so many jokes that made Olivia laugh out loud.

It was her happiest day in her stay in the rest house. It was the happiest and full meal she had ever had after several attempt from her parents for her to dine with them.

Augustus could no longer cease the moment seeing Olivia this happy and all he could ever think was to give her his friendship so as not to allow her to have the kind of attitude that everyone was talking about and for him not to see any more of her tantrums. He was decided that his friendship might mean a lot to her and so he will give it to her.
