"Lily! Stay away from the cliff. Your father might get mad at you. He might even kill me if something happens to you."
"No I won't. I'd rather have something bad happen to me. You don't love me anyway."
Olivia sobbed to her hearts content just like any ten year old kid who wasn't able to get her most-liked teddy bear. She was so heartbroken as she learned that Augustus, the son of their gardener will be going to Baguio to study college to follow her best friend Kristina.
It was just a month ago when Olivia's father hired a gardener to maintain the landscaping of their rest house in Bukidnon where she will be spending their two months vacation. She was so bored as they came but when she saw the son of the gardener, she couldn't understand why she was sweating while her heart beats so fast. She was so happy just by looking at him from her bedroom window. She would watch him help his father in gathering rocks and soil for the transplant of the beautiful flowers that Olivias' mother bought from a nearby town.
After a week of watching Augustus, she confidently walked towards him and introduced herself.
"Hi, I'm Olivia."
"Hello, I'm Augustus."
"Yeah, I know. My dad told me...and you know what? I think I love you."
Astonished by her actuation and frank expression at a very young age, Augustus laughed hard enough that for a short moment made Olivia cry.
"Hey! I was just kidding little girl. I am just surprised of how vocal you are at your very young age. Do you even understand what you are talking?"
"Ofcourse, I do. And I am pretty much sure that you're going to marry me someday."
And again, Augustus laughed hard. But he find Olivias' words so pure and innocent that he admire her in some way. He was almost going to touch her forehead when a pretty young woman called out his name.
"August!"
"Kristina!"
"Hi there," Kristina, Augustus childhood friend, said as she drew nearer to Augustus.
"Who is she?" looking down at Olivia.
"Oh! She's Lily, my little Lily in this beautiful garden," Augustus answered as he spread his arms while describing the garden where they are standing.
With the words "my little lily" that came out from Augustus mouth, it made Olivia joyful that it made her run towards their dirty kitchen to hide away her happiness as she heard him say that she was his lily. She went to the stairs to her room and got her diary given by her grandmother and started writing her very first beautiful experience in this vacation that she was spending with her mom and dad. She even sketched a lily flower below the date and started writing in details her feeling of affection and admiration towards Augustus.
The days passed and she was enthusiastic as she woke up so early everyday until one Sunday morning, She went to her mom and dad's room and asked their permissionn if she could help their gardener in replanting some of the flowers her mom got from her aunt at the back of their house. Her father appreciated her helping idea and knowing that she wanted to learn some basic skills in gardening, she was permitted to do it.
As she was about to make a turn going to the back of their veranda, she heard a sweet laughter of a lady and so she looked down. She saw the lady who was calling Augustus yesterday. She saw them laughing while hugging and sometimes throwing dried leaves with each other. She felt something pierced her heart and suddenly she felt her tears flowing from her cheeks and she couldn't understand why she was feeling such heartache.
She run, run as fast as she could until she reached a broken bridge. She stayed there for a couple of hours not realizing that it was already pass lunch time.
Meanwhile, Madam Odette was anxious already of not finding her daughter after several call and so she went to Don Maximus to ask if their daughter had went into another place aside from the garden at the back of their house. To her dismay and to Don Maximus anger, the whole household went on searching for Olivia.
Don Maximus asked their gardener if he had seen her daughter went somewhere else.
"Don Maximus, I am afraid I haven't seen the young madam anytime today."
"But she said she wanted to help you Berto! How come you didn't even notice the things that are happening around you!" Don Maximus shouted.
Augustus by this time was around after getting a cart loaded with soil when he heard the Don, he then butted in, "If you may, Don Maximus, i will try to search for young Olivia. I think I happen to see her running this morning towards the old bridge."
"Go there immediately and have her home safe. If anything happens to my precious Olivia, I tell you, I would kill you all!"
Frightened by Don Maximus words, Augustus went running towards the old bridge to look for Olivia.
"Olivia! Olivia! Where are you?"
There was extreme silence in the area. He was nearing the old bridge when he saw little Olivia at the cliff near the broken bridge. Slowly he came near her with difficulty as the broken bridge was too old and destroyed.
"Lily! Stay away from the cliff. Your father might get mad at you. He might even kill me if something happens to you."
"No I won't. I'd rather have something bad happen to me. You don't love me anyway."
Frightened by Olivias' reponse, Augustus couldn't find the precise words to answer Olivia. He just sat beside her and they stayed silent for a moment and he then spoke to her like an older brother.
"Hey! Do you know what you're talking about?"
"Yes."
"Do you know what love really is?"
"Yes, perhaps i know. Like how my mom and dad loves each other."
"Precisely. You're a smart kid. And smart kids with beautiful eyes like your never get to know real love unless they get to the right age when they k ow how to handle falling and being in love."
"But I want you and I don't want you to go with Kristina. I heard you two talked awhile ago and i can't stand not seeing you if you go with her."
"Lily, look at me. What you are fewling to me right now seems to be just a brotherly love since you don't have any siblings. I do care for you because you are like my little sister."
"No!"
Olivia cried to her hearts content. She couldn't understand her feelings at the moment that even the comforting words of Augustus seems to be unheard.
Unable to make Olivia settle from crying, Augustus made a promise to Olivia just for her to stop crying and so they could go home already since its already pass lunchtime.
" Ok, listen to me my little Lily. If by the time you are old enough to be my wife, I will surely love you...but you have to grow up first because you arw too little to become my bride."
"Really?" Olivia lift her head and looked at Augustus with full of hope in her eyes. "And you will be breaking up with Kristina, is that right?"
"Yeap."
"You will really wait for me?"
"Yes."
"Cross my heart?"
"Hope to die."
And they both stood up and went home.
